  1. It's blocked in the US, I can't watch it. They have to do that because the tracks and footage shown were only licensed for the UK. Also, not trying to be a jerk or nitpick, but the Stylistics aren't a "band" they are a vocal group. I think it's an important distinction that lots of people who say band don't understand ... not saying you don't understand it, I just think it's important in the understanding of this genre to be precise about that. Thanks.
  2. here is the black ivory check out those suits
  3. I don't have access to the show you're talking about but one of the sickest things I've seen is a delfonics clip where you can almost "see" the falsetto over a sparse backing. It's from this episode but they were doing a different song, they don't really do it on this track. there is also an awesome black ivory performance from this show
  4. I don't know about the age but a surprising amount of pre-1970 gay men got married and have children. Many got divorced later when they hit their mid life crisis and couldn't deal. I doubt little richard was ever in the pre-1970 "hide it" phase though.
  5. do you have a photo of the whole group where that pic came from? Actually I think I've seen one and it was pre-afro, they were wearing nice suits. you got my hair all wrong, i try to keep a tight buzz on the head and beard. Except I don't care enough to get haircuts enough and it turns into a mess.
  6. I actually pulled out some garbage pop record yesterday (leslie jon) when i was going through some stuff and thought that there was no way you had it listed. I was about to email you but it was on your site.
  7. it didn't sound the same based on the "millionaire" side. It sounded like a male-female duo.
  8. some are his, some are other people's that are auctioned on commission
  9. I'm 33 and have a big collection and in general have not been part of or influenced by any scene (and if I was, definitely not by the northern scene). I just buy what sounds good. I can also DJ a good dance set if I want. I will say that my tastes broadened over time after collecting and DJing though. When I started I thought all northern soul was garbage, now I think just most of it is . (if you're about to make a long angry post about my last statement, first try to have a sense of humor...) I can't believe I have 25 posts or whatever in this thread, and I have no opinion about what should be played in the northern soul scene. I need to log off.
  10. it's on some CD with other memphis acts like the Lyrics, etc. i found it when googling, i can probably find it again and then find partial clips.
  11. did you mean to write "smokin shades of black"? this thread should be closed, there's no dialog at this point.
  12. is this the robert moore that sang in All the People and Miami?
  13. I don't think this is strange. i don't do searches on all the items I want to bid on every day until they end. Lots of people also BIN list rare records way too cheap.
  14. I feel a little differently about that. It always turns up trashed and people bid it up high always. The two records I mentioned have (imo) their value artificially kept high because nobody ever lists one at a low start and let the bidders determine the value.
  15. I look at the issue similarly but slightly differently. People need the context of mainstream r&b culture as well as African American culture / history in order to truly evaluate the rarities, as all of that is necessary context. I see some ridiculous things sometimes. I think the greatest record released in the 70s was the Spinners "I'll be around". I swear I've seen someone put it in sales as a new discovery. it's also embarrassing when a song is a cover or copy or answer to a big hit and people don't know. Or how so many funk records were straight james brown copy records -- it might be a $2000 record but it's unlikely it's better than JB. That said, I think that independently produced, underground music often has a raw, sincere. and personal quality lacking in major label releases. Also, I think a little differently about vocal groups than I do deep soul as singing harmony was a social / cultural activity that tons of people just did without even having an audience. I love sparse records with falsetto harmony. So independent records in that genre really have something unique and there are a lot of quality records because people were doing the same things in every city.
  16. this will change if you sign up for my sales list
  17. i have the careless five on 101 if you need info on that for some reason
  18. ok well dylan i guess i also misread the post you were responding to, sorry. either way, that innersouls rules (as well as the a-side of the mystics "that's the kind of love", one of the greatest sweet soul cuts to come out of chicago).
  19. This thread is getting personal and there's no discussion happening. It should be closed.
  20. For other records I can wait it out and they'll come up cheaper eventually. But not these two for some reason. Chicago had record heat, 3 days over 100, and it's not even the worst part of the country. I just stay inside with my air conditioning on.
  21. i just had my first bad packing experience (it's really messed up) with him, it's almost like they wanted to mess with me. I will wait for their response before posting what happened. Maybe a new incompetent employee.
  22. I think the ultimate conclusion of all this is that nobody here should ever bid on ebay, but should continue to put rare records on ebay.
  23. Why is this record always available for sale and why won't the price drop much below $300?? I obviously wouldn't be complaining about this if I already had a copy, but I don't understand how it's impossible to get a cheap copy of this. I think part of it is that anyone who has it has a clean copy and starts it at $250. Another record like that (which I don't care too much about but would buy for cheap) is the Cross Bronx Expressway. It has maintained exactly the same value, going back to when funk collecting was huge. Why will it not drop?
  24. you responded quoting a post from Pete S that was talking about how he couldn't move copies of the Specials and Pete made no reference to the Innersouls 45 ever. Not trying to split hairs, but there was no way anyone could have figured that out from your post... Anyways, I agree the innersouls "thoughts" is killer, I regretted not buying it when you were selling it. I finally got a copy recently, the only clean one I've ever seen. in England is "dirge" spelled differently than in the US? Also, does it mean something totally different than it does in the US? Thanks.
  25. the flip of the specials "can't find another" is the instrumental version of the song Pete, records go up and go down in value. I think the specials is on its way down, there was a buzz with lots of wants posted, then in the last year or two there's less talk about it. I don't see how you could be mad about not getting the maximum price a record went when it shot up when there's no way to know which records will go up or how high they would go. I had an extra copy of double o demingos "color one tear black". I sold it to someone for $275, I thought I did well, the next week it's going for $1000+. Last night I saw on ebay some random boogie record that has been bid up to $2500. I knew I had it. I looked and I got it on ebay in 2009 for $4. You win some, you lose some. It helps to keep up with all the price changes though.
