  1. this page is interesting: https://www.earlyhendrix.com/artistsconfirmed/84-lonnie-youngblood-fakes
  2. oh i see in the comments that a) lowrider dudes already know it and b) the singer is gloria barnes
  3. this rules so hard. if that were on a 45 it would already be bootlegged on every lowrider cd ever. of course now it's going to be bootlegged on every lowrider cd ever in the future.
  4. Hi. I'm looking for a copy of the Dynamics "woe is me" on Black Gold #12. Please PM me with price and condition if you have a copy. Thanks in advance.
  5. Even after numero's first deep city comp came out, Craig Moerer had copies of Them Two available for $75. Even though I had never seen it before I kept waffling on it (e.g. if it's that at craig moerer, is it really worth that much). After a few weeks some dude bought them all and sold them for $300+ on ebay.
  6. I never noticed before but that linda jones 45 is the first Loma and after record i can think of that has female backing. I always thought the vest record was their last 45. Does it say "1965" on the record? as long as this is the "say stuff about the icemen thread" I might as well be the first person to mention that Jimi Hendrix supposedly played on the Samar 45s.
  7. One of my favorite records of all time is Johnny and the Expressions "shy girl". Not fast enough to be northern I guess, but boys and girls together is. I don't understand the Sam Dees thing mentioned above though. What tracks does he sing falsetto on?
  8. i get mislisted items all the time. a good way to maximize your price is to post a thread on soul source linking to your auction.
  9. Also, I was wondering what the elements guy's hair looks like when he wakes up before he picks it out, and how much time it takes to maintain that hair each day. Also, does he even need a pillow?
  10. Dante C says that he has a Saru photo of the elements and that they have fros in that also. I have an exits photos where they all have pretty big afros (and it includes jimmy conwell, coincidentally connecting it to this thread...)
  11. It was the manhattans biggest hit on deluxe. Linda Jones and the Mamselles on ABC did the same answer song.
  12. this is good but what interests me most are originals, like 99% of "island soul" is covers of US hits
  13. yeah, but you probably do other things like go outside, interact with people in real life, etc.
  14. according to some youtube comments, the guy in the chair is (now deceased...) rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard's father. The group does have someone with the same last name, I think it's probably true.
  15. I think I said my age in the first interview I did... Anyways, the internet is funny. If you go to record shows in the US there are all these crusty old dealers that are total jerks or just weird. The anonyminity of ebay hides all that. It's surprising the times where I get a taste of reality. Like I called a dealer to hear something, and he had a southern drawl, clearly didn't know or care about soul, etc.
  16. I wasn't trying to imply that other people weren't, I was just responding to the original query about how young people find stuff. I have total respect for everyone out there aggressively listening to as much music as they can and digging in real life or the internet or wherever just to hear things that they don't know.
  17. I don't know anything about Jamaican records (although I do know something about other "island" records...) but I have heard some killer straight sweet soul harmony records. One of them was the Wailers, I was surprised. I'm too obsessive and completist to get into collecting one more thing, but they are nice when I hear them.
  18. p.s. which one of the smoked sugar guys is jimmy conwell?
  19. these dudes were going for the same thing but were in the minor leagues compared to that
  20. Holy sh!t, that's an insane photo. I think the photo I saw was not of the elements but of the out of sights. I don't think I've seen an elements photo before.
  21. I thought about this more, Russell was not unique in always singing falsetto in all ranges (for example, the Delfonics did this). But his specific voice matched the pop songs perfectly which I think resulted in their success. I can't imagine the Delfonics doing the Stylistics hits and having pop hits with them. I think their voices are too soulful to be poppy. There is a lost stylistics LP recorded before Avco. "You're a big girl now" is my favorite record they did. I would love to hear the lost LP, I'm sure it's killer. They were managed by the dudes who managed the precisions (hen-mar group) and also early sister sledge (they put out their first record pre-atlantic).
  22. It sounds like a decent song. Does it really have the sound that can become "big"? It's very sparse, which works when there's a heavy beat, but this has almost no beat to it.
  23. Russell Thompkins could sing well. He may not have been the best falsetto in soul music but he clearly was the most successful. There's a weird quality to his voice where he never goes out of falsetto mode even when he hits the lower notes (Eddie Holman would switch in and out). I think that really defined a unique sound for him, and is what garethx is calling "reedy". I think this style of singing really matched the pop-oriented songs that they did. It's jarring when you hear a singer switch from singing baritone to falsetto. There is a big feud between Russell and the rest of the original Stylistics. They (I guess specifically Airron Love) kicked him out, took control over the name, and his new group is the "New Stylistics". They stylistics are not the stylistics without Russell, he was the whole sound.
  24. Sad news. Dean Francis died today, 7/11/2012. He wrote a ton of excellent Columbus records ... for groups like Timeless Legend, the Four Mints, etc. He was a member of Jupiter's Release and later of Sun. His first record on Hillside is currently becoming popular as a "funky northern" spin. He was an incredibly nice guy, I had the pleasure of having breakfast with him once. He seemed really meek and careful, but he actually was even a motivational speaker and was just very humble. The numero group blog has a more extensive write up here, by one of the label owners who interacted with Dean the most: http://numerogroup.w...ncis-1951-2012/ added by site Soul Rockin' with Rick Redmon Reminiscing About the Soul Rockers and the Funky Disposition Based on an interview with Rick Redmon 4/6/03 http://www.columbusm..._rockers_1.html a full lengthy detailed history of the soul rockers including the interesting fact that they played the backing on the Chandlers famed classic "Your love make me lonely"
