What Are The Rarest Us Motown Group 45's (Excluding Frank Wilson)?
boba replied to Mick Sway's topic in Look At Your Box
many of the things aren't very rare either though, it's a mix of ultra rarities and sort-of-hard-to-find records. The creations on melody is not that hard (I don't think they had two releases, and I checked that number and title). The charters on melody is like a 1-known copy record (it's really good too). -
Stax/volt The Best Of The Companies Xover And Northern Soul Releases
boba replied to Mick Sway's topic in Look At Your Box
The people paying a high price aren't northern soul DJs. The song has a classic hiphop sample (pete rock and cl smooth) and is a great danceable funk record. John Legend and the Roots recently covered the song. That should be pretty big evidence that the actual music has a very wide appeal, wider than even soul / funk fans. I think it was used in a jeans commercial. It might not be your sound but I don't think that it's a northern soul cut. The sound makes a lot of sense to younger DJs. Also, the We Produce stock copy is also extremely rare, I had a copy before it was "discovered" and it definitely wasn't something that was around before that then dried up. -
like they were so poor that they couldn't ask someone else to hold the camera? that's really poor.

Sitting In The Park - All Female Soul, All Subgenres Sales List
boba replied to boba's topic in Website Sales
sorry for the delay, should be out before 8pm CST. I'm not used to dealing with this many records and underestimate my time. Sorry again. -
you probably have me to thank for that as I reported him in every possible way. i just haven't left a negative. maybe i'll do a neutral. how stupid is this dude that he won't sell a $20 record for $15 (even if it were allowed on ebay), like that $5 is worth alienating a customer.

I have a 7 miles high publicity photo, will dig it up and post

I was recording records last night and recorded the josephine taylor on palos. the other side not in the youtube video is the a-side and it was a minor hit in chicago. i listened to it and it blew me away, and it was deep soul and i generally don't even like deep soul. but it was excellent.

Not The Best Way To Maximise Your Record Price
boba replied to MrsWoodsrules's topic in All About the SOUL
I agree this was mislisted. The main issue I see is that the genre is just "soul" when it should be put in the standard R&B/Soul category. This is the most common ways seller mislist items. Every day I look at all R&B/soul 45s ending the next day so I missed brad's listing, I probably would have bid a little higher than it went for. Even people that don't go through all the records in the category might use it as a filter in their saved search so it affects those people too. -
he didn't officially "cancel" the transaction, he just said "this transaction is cancelled" in the messages above. If he did cancel through ebay I could still leave feedback. This situation is worse because I might get a non paying bidder thing, etc. I reported his message directly to ebay. Fortunately he had not yet learned the "This item was cracked" line. The last 5 times people have done that I've asked for a photo of the crack and never gotten one.
-
what happened is exactly what's in the messages. I won it for his minimum bid of $15 (which is what I'd expect to be the ending bid in an auction of this item, you can buy it now for $20-$25). I randomly got his first message saying there was a "listing error", and then you can see the correspondence from there.

i generally don't approve of these kinds of threads as there is two sides to every story and people just like to bash others, but this is pretty egregious and totally clear given these messages. You probably should not do business with seller epickering2012 who just started selling. Here is the correspondence. ------ Dear epickering2012, Ebay is a binding contract. You can't cancel it because you didn't achieve the price you wanted. Additionally, you have extremely unrealistic expectations about prices. People have buy-it-nows on the item for $25-$30. $15 is a reasonable auction price. Nobody will ever bid or even buy set sale at $45. If you want to start an item low but not sell it for under a certain price, you can set a reserve. You had another record up (Johnny Durain) for a $75 minimum. If you look at the site popsike.com, it had sold 3 times and never even reached $75, much less had it as a starting price. Right now the market is even lower because people don't have money to spend. Either way, go ahead and cancel the auction, I will accept the cancellation. Thank you and good luck with your future sales. - ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From:epickering2012 To: Subject:Re: epickering2012 sent a message about I'm Drowning, Viki Adams, DJ Copy #230820500501 Sent Date:Jul-13-12 21:14:25 PDT Dear , I put new selling prices in yesterday. These new prices are about 1/3 the price I expect to sell them at. This was done to encourage bidding. Since the new prices were only listed for one day, many people didn't even see it. There-fore, there was very little bidding if any. The bids that I did receive were at the new bid minimum which is much lower than the price I expect to sell them at. I hope you understand my position. Thanks for your interest anyway. -epickering2012 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: To:epickering2012 Subject:Re: epickering2012 sent a message about I'm Drowning, Viki Adams, DJ Copy #230820500501 Sent Date:Jul-13-12 19:16:35 PDT Dear epickering2012, What? Another example of someone who probably was not doing falsetto but who just had a high voice was Nolan Strong. I think the Diablos backing harmony had to be falsetto though. Falsetto was already prominent in the doowop era, it was part of R&B before the temptations were around (even pop, e.g. the four seasons). Also, I don't think Kendricks is one of the main inspirations for falsetto in the soul era. He definitely had one of the most famous and recognizable falsetto voices, and he was part of probably the biggest R&B group of all time, but the temptations sound was always built around the David Ruffin type lead, switching off between the bass, high tenor / falsetto, second tenor, etc. I think the Impressions were more responsible for the types of falsetto that became important in soul, as the lead (and harmonies) were falsetto. Also, more of an inspiration for 70s falsetto harmony was probably groups like Little Anthony and the Imperials.
-
Just to clarify, falsetto does not just mean singing in a high register. A man can have a weird voice where he can sing high without going into falsetto and like i mentioned above, you can sing falsetto for lower notes. It's a specific technique in your vocal chords (if you want a complicated explanation see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falsetto). Heart full of love was their biggest hit (and is great), but this is my favorite invincibles track, it's even a cover and they destroy any other version. The falsetto over that guitar and sparse production is amazing (unfortunately this is slightly sped up): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNKXCRGmQcE

for the record, I have since gotten a polydor stock copy with the flip. the flip is clearly andre williams just screwing around in the studio, intentionally making some garbage that nobody would every play (it's vaguely amusing). So it's not a lost ultra-rare gem like some of the polydor flips.

you need at least 60x to actually see what's happening in the grooves, although you can see the lines at 30x

I have the super rare soul brothers on kanwic which is rudy love's first recording. Dante C in Chicago has pretty much every Wichita soul record but still doesn't have that one... re: wichita soul, the Smart Brothers and their related records are from there, also Chuck Walker, who was on 20th Century and who had an excellent deep soul / group 45 as chuck walker and the VIPs on Virgo.

never heard this before, thanks for posting. i like this style of music, and Jimmy Stokes' voice is recognizable and he sings well, but this sounds like a mediocre song to me. What does the other side sound like? Thanks.
-
If someone has a record that skips I can fix it for them for a fee. It would not involve any sort of stupid thing like pushing the tonearm down when it played or anything like that -- it would involve me looking at the grooves with a microscope and directly fixing the skipping part.

I actually don't really like any version except the Manhattans (although I don't own the icemen and haven't heard it much to really judge). The answer record also isn't exactly the same in lyrics or tempo (it's slower) and it sort of drags to my ear, not my favorite Linda Jones cut. Not bad records, just not great ones. That demo version above was of the original version (not the answer record), clearly an unfinished demo but the rawness of it made it original and awesome. Does anyone have that LP or have the cut on CD and know if it's longer? More off topic, my favorite manhattans deluxe track is "the picture became quite clear", so good.
-
can someone point me to one of these CDs with this specific track? Thanks.

Does anyone own the LP that the track in that youtube video is taken from? The youtube clip fades after two and a half minutes. I'm just wondering if the LP version is longer. It's on some "records jimi hendrix played on" LP, I think one of the LP comments says it. Thanks.
