  1. Fredrik, I've got it wrong - if you have the record, I only assumed it was on Roulette as there is a group of that name on the label Thanks for the correction, I only heard it once about 12 years or so back and have never come across it since. As you say, whether it's the Cleveland group or not - who knows? Can you post up a scan or the writer credits etc, there may be a clue there
  2. I remember this getting plays at Cleethorpes by Poke - well before Stafford Mind you it didn't do much at the time as I recall
  3. Dunno really Ken ( - I did notice the stars) , but if you check out the number below the date - 2732 for "We did it" and 2733 for the other side. Generally speaking the lower number is the A side, which suggests mine is the first promo and maybe yours was done later to promote the flip side - to a different audience? But of course this is only a guess and could be complete nonsense! I've a few 45s which have been demoed using both sides as 'same both siders' on different 45s. Off the top of my head, there's the Impressions "Wherever she leads me" as a same both sides demo when it was the B side on Curtom issues. Also Universal Mind's "For You girl" as same both sides, when the Red Coach issues have "Something fishy..." as the A side. ...But really this ought to be a different thread on it's own and not hogging the Wilson Pickett one!
  4. Great non LP version of the Lamont Dozier LP track - and if you're lucky it's backed by another goodie "Talk a little less" But you need the issue I'm afraid... anyone got one want to swap for my demo? Some great tunes Shaun by the way
  5. Great double sider Sean You might as well send her the other side too
  6. Co-incidently I've been going through the "We came to play" LP this morning and also played "Bittersweet Soul Music" and the next track "I am a fool" - both sounding well. I've got the Urban Renewal LP and so know "Come back baby" - but not yet heard the one Sean mentioned "It's so nice"... maybe another one for the 'list' Sean?
  7. It's credited to Alfie on the RCA 45, but I've not been able to lay my hands on the Imperials 45 or LP to confirm it's the same on them. Maybe someone else can confirm this before I find my copies?
  8. I know it's around on Soul Vibes, but think it's a re-press or something? other than that I don't know much about it either.
  9. That will be the later (early) 1970's UK release then - "How can I" is on the US Motown release of it from 1964: Motown 1067 - Sweet Thing / How Can I - 1964
  10. Do you mean the Kent 12" with Art Gentry "This is my chance" - I think might be on there also (or is it just "Tin man"?
  11. Yellow Pye eh I don't suppose a scan of it is possible?
  12. There's a 30 second sample on Amazon Amazon Oops - you beat to the punch!
  13. No, I must have been dreaming, just had a look and neatly 'filed' away in with some other Chess / Cadet singles was a copy of the Orange issue same as your pic! (so I do have one after all!) But on the opposite side of this, I do have a copy of the Dells "Inspiration" / "You belong to someone else" on the Orange Cadet whereas other copies I've seen are on the blue label - so maybe there some of each which came out during the labels changeover period and they were just using up old label stock etc?
  14. Try the flip side - "How can I" for another nice tune
  15. You could always ask Ken himself - his website has his contact details as well as a partial discog and listing of some of the songs he's written. Including "Wait till I Get to know ya" A-dish-A-tunes It makes interesting reading too! I reckon a few of us on here should be able to more than double his 'discography' listings though as there's quite a lot of titles missing that even I can see
  16. How's it compare to Gene Chandler's version Sean? - I have a copy of that, but don't think I've actually heard the Major's version?
  17. I thought it was odd too - I don't have a 45 of it but I'm almost certain I've seen it on a black label
  18. Great record indeed Oh... my copy is on Black Atlantic! (Not for sale though)
  19. Agreed Sean - I have both versions and have to admit the Imperials is by far better!
  20. Stop it - you're making me blush! No seriously, I only picked it up this 'century', from Ian Clark at one of the Soul Essence weekenders probably just before it started rising up in price again, it was somewhere in the five pounds region as I recall. I haven't played it to compare but think the acetate version will be part two of the single - is the acetate a UK one by chance? I can't imagine why they had this side done instead of the vocal? By the way, I don't own the New Moon issue, it's just a picture I got off 'the bay'. I did have a white demo but let it go many years ago and just kept my UK Right on demo. I would imagine the Portuguese Pye copy was released around the same time as the UK release (Right on being part of the Pye setup) But there again, I have been known to be wrong!
  21. I seem to think the UK 7" release of Elusive could be the one mentioned. I know it was different from the US 7" which was the one played. Maybe it was the LP version? - I can't remember off hand.
  22. Aretha Franklin - Angel This was definitely on a 45 - lovely stuff
  23. It's the Fantastic Puzzles Also came out on UK Right on and was a Dave Godin pick. But to be different - how about a Portugese copy: With a neat cover:
  24. The Brickyard had numerous DJs during it's life, starting from the first time I can remember would have been mid / late '74 when Huddersfield's John Simms did it, playing a mix of pop and soul and shortly moving over to all soul as the requests from the 'punters' showed that it was the way to go. Tuesday nights was the night first off - I remember he was mates with Ian 'Frank' Dewhurst who I remember calling in with him on some nights. I'm not sure if he also did the Friday night sessions as well or whether that was later when Blink and co took over sometime around '75 / '76 By the way - I was also playing the tunes along with Blink & Phil Sharp up to sometime in '77 Pete had to 'retire from the nights partly due to oncoming parent duties and as the equipment was his, the night ended. After that I recall for a time Derek Sheldon and Steve Croft stepping in for a while. I also seem to think someone else did it for a time but can't recall just when it would have been... It certainly was popular for some years and was a regular meeting place for the local crowd from anywhere between Doncaster to Barnsley and Rotherham and Sheffield. Like Malc, my memory is also a bit hazy after all those years!
  25. I suppose this recording also qualifies It's got that 'muffled' sort of sound which always gives me the impression it was recorded with a bag over the mike!
