  1. Have to agree with Mr Hampsey, its a very poor imitation.

If you want a better "modern" psuedo-house record go for his earlier single Helping Hand, much better single and doesn't have to live up to the perfection that is the Staple singers.

At least you didnt ask about the horrendous Way Of Life version that used to be played at early Southport which is possible the worst record ever (although there are many contenders for that!!)

Well, I don't mind all the versions to an extent... but have to agree that Mavis is by far the best of 'em all thumbup.gif

BTW Jock - Arthur's "Helping hand" was actually on the same single as his version of "TOYL" yes.gif:wicked:

  2. Here's a few bits I've got from South Africa:

    Adam Wade

Shine on silver moon / Keeping up with the Joneses

    Kirshner 1652 (1978)

    -----------------------

    Revelation

Feel it / When I fall in love

    Gallo 1939 (1981)

    -----------------------

    Oscar Toney Jr

The baby is mine / Workin' together

    Atlantic 555 (1971)

    -----------------------

    Gloria Scott (LP)

    What am I gonna do

    Casablanca NAL 27003 (1974)

    ------------------------

There may be others, but these are what I know of for sure

Of course, I didn't go there in person, but picked them up through lists and the internet

Have a good, but safe trip!

  3. wanted for the gotta have love side

but just out of curiosity -

    new world 104 - b-side / dont break that rule 1977

    new world 7803 - b- side / dont break the rules 1977

why would you have 2 different titled b- sides, when both were released 1977

and are they the same track

    shep

I don't know about the New World 7803 titles, but here's mine:

    Marvell Love

    "Gotta have love"

    "Don't break that rule"

    New world 104

Hope this helps a little?

    (not for sale though)

  4. I think I'll stick to my trusty plastic nail brush and soap tongue.gif

Wet the brush and add a little soap, liquid or a bar works the same, then simply brush around the grooves holding the record at an angle so as not to wet the label and rotate it around while brushing, then wash it off under a running tap. Dry it off and that usually does the trick!

It seems to work just as good as most methods mentioned above.

I don't really know what advantage is to be had by using isopropanol - can anyone elaborate on this?

Of course, it will only remove the dust and ground in dirt, it can't remove scratches, but I have managed to stop jumping records by holding a bit more pressure on the top of the arm above the stylus in the faulty area - which sometimes cuts the scratch out. (As mentioned above)

  5. Spot on Steve!

First time the Rotherham lads heard Sam play it down at Essence we started throwing things in the direction of the decks!

It's kind of a tradition now, whenever Sams on!

    laugh.gif

    This is true!

Co-incidenlty I've re-discovered this review from an old 'Xmas' related mag - I thought it was topical:

True Image - "I'm not over you" (Super Smash UR 1324)

Comes hurtling out of the speakers at about 75 mph, a careering mix and match of New York City's "I'm doing fine now" and Harold Melvin's "Satisfaction guaranteed", well, near enough not to worry.

The lead swaps and changes like an all night sitting in the House of Commons as it busies along.

That wouldn't be too surprising if this hailed from Philly or New Jersey, but Bill Wright and Thomas Stewart wrote this and the label's based down in Selma, Alabama. Nothing like a traditional Southern side, but a great racey slab of group soul

No offence intended, but I wonder if the 'writer' still has the same thoughts on this record?

  6. Great Stuff Mal thumbup.gif

I wonder if this might be the start of a new thread? - promo letters and similar things.

I did a bit many years back for Bernie at the Soul City Limits website - the page is still there, but the pics aren't all there anymore :D

    https://www.soulcitylimits.com

It looks as though the site is no longer active, maybe I ought to post them up on here?

    Here's a few for starters:

  8. Got something back off Ronnie`s team.

Ronnie pretty much forgot about it until around 1985 while doing a gig in the UK. The audience started yelling out for him to do 'Sitting In My Class", he was stunned but the audience was rather persistent so he stopped his band and did the song on his on. After the show someone came up to him with a 45 to sign.....Ronnie didn't have a clue that record was out after almost 20 years...

That sort of ties in with the phone call my mate had around that time doesn't it?

    (see my earlier post)

  9. Gareth,

The Stax JJ Barnes record is the Steve Mancha recording, if you noticed on my first mention of it, I put 'JJ Barnes' in inverted commas as it isn't him singing but Steve Mancha. The 45 was just credited to him on the label

I don't have the Rare Stamps LP itself, but do have the "Sound of Detroit" CD with it and the Darrell Banks LP as a 'two fer'

I assume it will be the same as the Stax 45 albeit the LP version may be in stereo (I've never really noticed though)

I'll have to compare them sometime I suppose - unless someone else beats me to it that is

(I do have an MP3 of the CD version, but not of the 45, as I always assumed they were the same)

  10. Not much help, but I remember this recording coming out, with the bongos etc.

It was definately during the late 70's

But I never really got to know who was behind it, who either pressed it up or imported it or whatever.

I don't think you'd get much out of Ronnie McNeir though, I recall a mate of mine in the mid 80's (ish), who did quite a bit of writing in fanzines at that time getting a rather nasty phone call from Ronnie himself, wanting to know about the bootleg and who was behind it - I assume he was referring to the boot of the original recording though, not the one Ken is asking about.

Needless to say, my mate couldn't really help him

  11. Di----Easy Living/I,ve Lost YOU---Groove City 206--The New Holidays--Dark Green(same as Sam Ward and Steve Mancha) i didn,t think it was in the £300 bracket tho.

    Regards

    T.C. AND THE FOOTBALL HOOLIGAN

I only have it by 'JJ Barnes' on UK Stax, but here's a picture of the Groove City 45:

    post-5094-1197925276_thumb.jpg

  12. Fredrik, I've got it wrong - if you have the record, I only assumed it was on Roulette as there is a group of that name on the label

Thanks for the correction, I only heard it once about 12 years or so back and have never come across it since.

As you say, whether it's the Cleveland group or not - who knows?

Can you post up a scan or the writer credits etc, there may be a clue there

  13. Dunno really Ken ( - I did notice the stars) , but if you check out the number below the date - 2732 for "We did it" and 2733 for the other side.

Generally speaking the lower number is the A side, which suggests mine is the first promo and maybe yours was done later to promote the flip side - to a different audience? g.gif

But of course this is only a guess and could be complete nonsense!

I've a few 45s which have been demoed using both sides as 'same both siders' on different 45s.

Off the top of my head, there's the Impressions "Wherever she leads me" as a same both sides demo when it was the B side on Curtom issues.

Also Universal Mind's "For You girl" as same both sides, when the Red Coach issues have "Something fishy..." as the A side.

...But really this ought to be a different thread on it's own and not hogging the Wilson Pickett one!

  14. Co-incidently I've been going through the "We came to play" LP this morning and also played "Bittersweet Soul Music" and the next track "I am a fool" - both sounding well.

I've got the Urban Renewal LP and so know "Come back baby" - but not yet heard the one Sean mentioned "It's so nice"... maybe another one for the 'list' Sean?

  15. it's jamaican, right, the singer and the label? I have it on some US issue from the 80s I think, I forget the name of the label but run by Jamaicans in NY I think.

I know it's around on Soul Vibes, but think it's a re-press or something?

other than that I don't know much about it either.

  16. Not sure what I've got "Sweet Thing" on 'cos I've had it for donkeys and would have to dig it out, but think the

flip on my copy is "It's A Shame" - yet another nice tune.

    -Kev.

That will be the later (early) 1970's UK release then - "How can I" is on the US Motown release of it from 1964:
