  1. Just reading this made me remember the (one and only) time I sat up in that balcony for two hours solid, holding a microphone Guess what, I've not long since got out the tracklisting for it and it was done sometime in May 1974 so not much after Dave's tape. I was just going to scan in the handwritten listing, but decided to type it out - for posterity! So here it is: Wigan Tape - May 1974 Side 1 We'll be making out - Jessica James & The Outlaws I've had it - Lee Andrews Land of 1000 dances - Mr Bloe I'll never get enough - Buchannan Brothers Too darn soulful - Morris Chestnut Please operator - Tony & Tyrone River deep, mountain high - Les McCann Ltd It really hurts me girl - Carstairs The Larue - Lada Edmund Jr Panic - Reparata & The Delrons Help me (Inst) - Al Wilson We got to keep on - Casanova II World without sunshine - Sandra Phillips Don't you care anymore - Jodi Mathis Thunder - Lord Thunder Let's do the duck - 'Richard Temple' (Willie Hutch) Easy Baby - Adventurers Why did you leave me girl - Soulful Hounds Prepared to love you - Thelma Lindsey Like Adam and Eve - Reflections I want to tell you - Obrey Wilson Sax on the tracks - Mike & Ike Run baby run - Discotheques There's a pain in my heart - Poppies Side 2 I can't help loving you - Paul Anka I don't want to discuss it - Instigation I'm satisfied with you - Fred Smith Orchestra Panic - Reparata & The Delrons I can't get enough - Teriffics This thing called love - Danny Wagner They say - Electronics Dance dance dance - Casualeers Let's go somewhere - R Dean Taylor Build your house on a strong foundation - Gwen & Ray Mr Big shot - Gene Chandler Let it be you babe - Music Box The Joker - Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band Love on a rampage - Perigents We got to keep on - Casanova II What's it gonna be - Susan Barrett Panic - Reparata & The Delrons It's gonna be hard - West Coast Revival Save my love for a rainy day - Van Dykes Help me (Inst) - Al Wilson Let it be you babe - Music Box Too darn Soulful - Morris Chestnut Jumping at the go go - Detroit Sounds ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ As you can probably tell from the tracks played - some of them more than once over the two hour period. I don't think Richard was on, but maybe Russ and someone else. I'd have to dig out the tape itself to check who it actually was as I can't remember that far back off the top of my head anymore! Plus - with the amount of instrumental tracks played, it probably was RW. From what I remember of it, it was typical of that period with lots of the old 'hand claps' during the records. That's all for now!
  2. Is there any easy way to tell the re-issues? Apart from having a copy in your hands that is, are the 'new' ones bar coded or not gatefolded or anything easy to tell?
  3. Yes I'm back! ... I've been having a look through the one's I have on this label and including the 3 UK Kwanza releases (Classic Sullivans, Black Ivory and Spyder Turner) and the two UK Warner Bros singles (Terry Collins & Bobby Byrd) - it looks like I only need the Sheila Ross single to have a copy of each release on a 7". Although there's a few more to get to have a copy of each US release... Anyway, more to the point - just what is her 45 like? I know it's not all that hard to pick up, but is it any good?
  4. Some great tunes on this label, I have most but not quite all of them... yet! I also have the Robert Dobyne on issue, but no scan of it to hand - but I do have a copy of the Warner Bros issue of Terry Collins "Show..." Not US though, but from Argentina [
  5. Probably recorded around the same time rather than updated - RB Hudmon's "How can I be a witness" (Cotillion) The LP version and 45 are different versions, with the album being a more uptempo recording of the song.
  6. Just finished listening to the show... great stuff - as to be expected from Gareth! A few nice surprises on there too (For me) Stevie Wonder - one I hadn't heard in years! Plus that lovely Johnnie Taylor track - which I didn't recall, along with the very Jerry Butler sounding Joe Odom Also... if no one told you, Sarah Dash was once a member of the Blue Belles along with Patti, Cindy Birdsong & Nona Hendryx Good stuff Girth - with the things you played, you can still be an 'honorary' member of our 'gang'!

  8. Yes Alan, a sad but often true fact; all too often rarity seems to be the more important factor over quality.
  9. Steve, Yes it has had the odd play here and there over the years - I picked up on it around the late 70's after hearing it on a tape from John Manship - lovely tune it is and still sounds great! I have the LP plus a UK Warner Bros white demo of it. Mind you... someone on here has it on an acetate.. which isn't Warner Brothers but something else if I recall correctly(?) Is that right Sean? Also I have to give a mention to another of her Warner Bros 45s called "You're gonna need me" which is the flip side to her also worthy "I'm just being myself" (But it's not on the flip of the UK release)
  10. Odd them jumping like that! I used to have a Yellow boot copy back in the early 70's which played perfect on both sides (Always liked 'Girl..' even then) Than picked up a proper Yellow issue from Soul Bowl around '77 - which I still own and that also plays pefectly well on both sides also!
  11. Well, I don't mind all the versions to an extent... but have to agree that Mavis is by far the best of 'em all BTW Jock - Arthur's "Helping hand" was actually on the same single as his version of "TOYL"
  12. Here's a few bits I've got from South Africa: Adam Wade Shine on silver moon / Keeping up with the Joneses Kirshner 1652 (1978) ----------------------- Revelation Feel it / When I fall in love Gallo 1939 (1981) ----------------------- Oscar Toney Jr The baby is mine / Workin' together Atlantic 555 (1971) ----------------------- Gloria Scott (LP) What am I gonna do Casablanca NAL 27003 (1974) ------------------------ There may be others, but these are what I know of for sure Of course, I didn't go there in person, but picked them up through lists and the internet Have a good, but safe trip!
  13. Can anyone help with a sound file of "If I lose your love" From Johnnie Taylor's Malaco LP - "Lover boy" (1987) I recently read a review in an old mag and just wondered what it was like? Cheers folks

For the 'record'... can anyone name the mag (and if you dare - the writer) in which this review originally came from? The year by the way was - 1992

I don't know about the New World 7803 titles, but here's mine: Marvell Love "Gotta have love" "Don't break that rule" New world 104 Hope this helps a little? (not for sale though)
  16. I think I'll stick to my trusty plastic nail brush and soap Wet the brush and add a little soap, liquid or a bar works the same, then simply brush around the grooves holding the record at an angle so as not to wet the label and rotate it around while brushing, then wash it off under a running tap. Dry it off and that usually does the trick! It seems to work just as good as most methods mentioned above. I don't really know what advantage is to be had by using isopropanol - can anyone elaborate on this? Of course, it will only remove the dust and ground in dirt, it can't remove scratches, but I have managed to stop jumping records by holding a bit more pressure on the top of the arm above the stylus in the faulty area - which sometimes cuts the scratch out. (As mentioned above)

This is true! Co-incidenlty I've re-discovered this review from an old 'Xmas' related mag - I thought it was topical: True Image - "I'm not over you" (Super Smash UR 1324) Comes hurtling out of the speakers at about 75 mph, a careering mix and match of New York City's "I'm doing fine now" and Harold Melvin's "Satisfaction guaranteed", well, near enough not to worry. The lead swaps and changes like an all night sitting in the House of Commons as it busies along. That wouldn't be too surprising if this hailed from Philly or New Jersey, but Bill Wright and Thomas Stewart wrote this and the label's based down in Selma, Alabama. Nothing like a traditional Southern side, but a great racey slab of group soul No offence intended, but I wonder if the 'writer' still has the same thoughts on this record?

  19. Great Stuff Mal I wonder if this might be the start of a new thread? - promo letters and similar things. I did a bit many years back for Bernie at the Soul City Limits website - the page is still there, but the pics aren't all there anymore https://www.soulcitylimits.com It looks as though the site is no longer active, maybe I ought to post them up on here? Here's a few for starters: There's more... when I find them!

  21. That sort of ties in with the phone call my mate had around that time doesn't it? (see my earlier post)

Gareth, The Stax JJ Barnes record is the Steve Mancha recording, if you noticed on my first mention of it, I put 'JJ Barnes' in inverted commas as it isn't him singing but Steve Mancha. The 45 was just credited to him on the label I don't have the Rare Stamps LP itself, but do have the "Sound of Detroit" CD with it and the Darrell Banks LP as a 'two fer' I assume it will be the same as the Stax 45 albeit the LP version may be in stereo (I've never really noticed though) I'll have to compare them sometime I suppose - unless someone else beats me to it that is (I do have an MP3 of the CD version, but not of the 45, as I always assumed they were the same)
  23. Now I wouldn't go as far as to say that Ken - as a pop record it's OK. I've heard it once or twice before on the radio and whilst I don't mind it, I wouldn't want to have a copy for myself
  24. Not much help, but I remember this recording coming out, with the bongos etc. It was definately during the late 70's But I never really got to know who was behind it, who either pressed it up or imported it or whatever. I don't think you'd get much out of Ronnie McNeir though, I recall a mate of mine in the mid 80's (ish), who did quite a bit of writing in fanzines at that time getting a rather nasty phone call from Ronnie himself, wanting to know about the bootleg and who was behind it - I assume he was referring to the boot of the original recording though, not the one Ken is asking about. Needless to say, my mate couldn't really help him

I only have it by 'JJ Barnes' on UK Stax, but here's a picture of the Groove City 45:
