A FEW DIRECTION COPIES CHEAPER, ALSO A COUPLE O COPIES OF I CAN'T STAND IT REALLY CHEAP
BRI PINCH
SUNDAY SOUL@THE WASHINGTON, 3RD JAN 2010,FITZWILLIAM ST, SHEFFIELD.
I thought Munchkin said in post no 3 that the Columbia copy was a different cut?
Surely that means Direction copies (if any) would be the same?
But don't know for sure do I?
-
That yellow 'Boot' of Eddie Rey, I had a listen to it a while back and it is a completely different recording of the song.
It even has a different song on the A side.
The auction page I saw it on even stated it was an alternate version or something.
Maybe it is something unissued that they've come across - that's assuming it's not just another release on Prix that's not known of?
Not having checked a Prix listing, I don't know for sure if the number they use is part of the series or not.
Does anyone know for certain it's not just a different release that's turned up?
Just curious...

Think you may be right Bri
There's a European on Gemm on CBS 3359 - maybe that's it?
Bit pricey though!

I've got that album on UK Direction.
I seem to think the title track was on a Direction 45 - If so maybe it's on the other side?
PS - I haven't a clue what the track sounds like, I haven't played that LP in over 25 years!
-
Isn't the reason for the price rise somewhat due to the interest created by the funk scene & Keb D?
-
Cissy's version was reviewed as a new release on PYE in a B & S issue from 1970. #48 Dec 4-17.
Reviewed by John Abbey he goes on to say "I'm somewhat confused with the Cissy Houston situation because both of these tracks have already been available on a Major Minor album that she cut for CUR Records. Presumably, Janus Records brought not only her contract but the masters to the album, too"...
That sort of ties in with what I attempted to say earlier
Cheers Martyn!
-
Bobby Dukes demos on Calla are Instrumental both sides - just be careful!
Saru is OK though
-
Think I've got this on a 12" in amongst the piles...
Sounds a bit uncomfortable that Joe!
-
Can't really put them in any order, but for me it has to include:
Soul Essence, Just Soul, Horse & Groom, Red Bar.

C Houston was played at Accy Legion in the summer of 74 along with lots of other non-stompers.
I went with Rick Foster and Chris Shepphard to Pitches and one of the DJs played it.
Anyway I said to him that was good to hear not heard it out since74, with the look he give me shows it didn't beleave me.
Hmmm. well I definately had it 'in the box' at Pitches, could even be the one who played it when you were there?
But seeing as I first heard it on that LP as I said above - I can't imagine being surprised at someone telling me that they'd not heard it since '74...
But that was a few years back so I couldn't swear to it ...It may not have been me either
Anyway, no worries whatever.
"Love don't hurt people" - If I remember rightly, wasn't the other version by Sharon Brown?
I think I have a UK picture sleeve copy of it, but forget the label off hand - Virgin maybe?.
Speaking of Cissy, there's a few nice things she did on EMI and also Private stock as I recall
"Love is holding on" being one.
I also have a bit of a soft spot for another of her Janus things "I'm so glad I can love again"
Yep she's got a great voice and she's even better when she has the right songs!
-
Thanks a lot Bob
1st hour downloaded, second one on it's way
Just need to find enough time to listen to it...
-
I think I have one... can't think what it's like though.
Nor where I put it
-
Missed this one!
There's one or two I haven't heard on the show - is there a download for it Bob?
-
First came across the record back in 1972 on an LP called Chess/Janus Mobile Disco. Actually bought the LP for A Love Reputation, In Orbit and The Entertainer, but was knocked out by this track, which at the time must have been the first song that I had heard by Cissy.
Seasons greetings and keep up the great posts in 2010.
Steve
Lovely tune it is! - I also first came across it via the same compilation album, later picked up the Album by Cissy with the track on - on UK Major Minor, (which actually came out before the Pye release Ken, as you'll no doubt know)
Commonweath records being released over here at the time by Major Minor, later the LP was released on Pye, then of course the 45 also on UK Pye.
The 45 I picked up for about 50p at Mr Dewhurst's old haunt - Cleethorpes Pier
Not being a 'stomper' so to speak, it wasn't regarded as anything special by the average all nighter goer / seller during the mid 70's period.
I then 'forgot' all about it until as Mr Plumb states, when it got plays during the 90's.
I also wondered about the Cissy / Dusty connection Ian...'Cissy's revenge' - sounds good to me!
-
Jason,
He's referring to an article John did with a magazine called "Big Daddy"
I don't know if there's an online version knocking around though - unless someone has scanned it at sometime?
.............................
....Not quite fast enough was I?
-
I may still have a spare of this 'tucked' away
Give me a shout if you want me to have a look and we'll discuss the finances later
-
Dooh!
Of course it is - I've got it on a CD swap back in 2006!!
Thanks for reminding me John.
-
Interesting stuff there Roger!
Funnily enough only last night I was looking at three variations of a US 70's 45 that I hadn't really noticed before.
It was Debbie Taylor's Arista side "Just don't pay" and they were all slightly different. layouts, two of them having a logo on the left hand side of the label, ('Touch of Gold') which isn't on mine - which is what drew me to checking out others for sale.
Here's one like mine:
Here's the two with the logos:
Yes, it's a funny thing this collecting lark isn't it!
-
So... Say what's on your mind Brett!
-
Anyone ever seen a stock release of this?
Just wondered if there was a flip side to it?
-
Don't mean to be difficult but are you sure, John? I don't remember it being on the US issue when I was looking!!
Many thanks
Yes, it definately got a US Roadshow release - maybe the reason you didn't find it is because in the States the album is called "Slow dancin'"? Also it's got a different cover picture.
It's on Roadshow BXL 1-3443, released in 1979
Some for sale here:https://www.gemm.com/ddc/search.pl?&disp_ad_format_mode=0&artist=BEN+MOORE&price_above=%2E001&&title=SLOW+DANCIN&price_above=%2E001&&mi=294618410|190001245
Wasn't the other LP titled "Purified"?
-
Not just those two Steve, I have it on the US Roadshow LP
Maybe it got a release in other countries also?
-
Mark,
I think this is CD only - from his 2002 album "Words of caution" on Severn records
Although the track was later issued in the UK on the Kent CD "Masterpieces of Modern Soul"
But you probably know that!
-
Yep the title is "All the waiting is not in vain" / "Need your loving everyday" on Dakar 609 from around 1969
Also UK red Atlantic.
Great record, but sorry Steve, no spare, - just the one for me!
But no doubt you've bagged one by now eh?

Very reminiscent of a James Brown 'warm up' thing - the sort of tune the band would do before the main act comes on.
Pretty so so for me though - I wouldn't go dashing up to the decks to find out what it was
Sorry Ken, but that's just my opinion
