  1. I used to listen to a few of those South Yorkshire stations - early 90's I think?

I forget the names now, but seem to recall they were a bit hit and miss as in you never quite knew when they would be transmitting.

Nemesis from Clowne - wasn't that Neil Page? I seem to remember hearing he was involved, but don't think I ever heard it.

I remember hearing a lot of the rare groove things played on one station, but I was thinking it was a Sheffield based one?

  2. I never realised Tommy Hunt did it Robb, although I am aware of his Atlantic side "I don't want to lose you" which is the other side of "Hold on" - Until now I hadn't connected them as Van McCoy songs.

45 Cat has this down as a 1965 release, with Marvin Smith as a 1967 release.

  3. Amazing to see it on a 45!

I played this in my LP-Only set at Yarmouth/Soul Essence a few years ago and this is the first time I've heard anyone mention a 45 of it?

Even John Benson missed it

Fair play to you Daryl, very nice!

'Si A Mi Dios' indeed

    Cheers

    Steve

No Steve, I didn't miss it at all - I thought I'd come across it a few years back, but couldn't find any proof when I looked. But I finally happened across one on eBay last summer for less than ten dollars.

I actually played it from the single last October during my Cotton Club set in Bilbao but surprisingly didn't get one 'bite' - no doubt they were all too drunk at the time!

I'll post up mine later - A white promo by the way! :D

  4. What about that Dionn single "Girl across the street" / "Try my love"?

Was that a legit release, or some sort of bootleg?

There's quite a few copies around, I thought they were from JamGuy records, but I'm not certain now.

  5.

My brains failing these days but I know some 45 releases were just marketed in one city. I recall a major label release from around 1970 that was only sent out to DJ's & then sold in the Baltimore area (someone must recall which 45 this was). The 45 label's even stated that it was only being made available in that city I seem to recall.

Are you thinking of that Janus 45 by the Inclinations?

I think that states that it's for release in Baltimore only.

  6. Cheers Dave, that looks about right.

I picked one up last year but was a bit suspicious about it as it has looked as if it used to have a push out centre.

I haven't come across any like that so wasn't sure about it. The label does look the same as the Independents 45 on 45cat - I forgot they have other countries releases nowadays.

I might get the label scanned some time as I can't say as I've come across one yet.

  7. This was part of a box set of singles, as you may know.

The set was also put out as a promos as well as the stock copies that you could get in the shops. I can remember seeing the promo set for sale not long after it was released - I've no idea what the price was though!

I did find a stock copy of this single many years later though, it cost a couple of quid or so!

  8. I also used to listen to AFN during the early 70's, generally in bed with my transistor radio and the latest copy of Blues & Soul opened at the US charts page. Ticking them off as I heard them.

I've still got the mags in the loft, but can't remember the name of the DJ for certain. I didn't have the means to record the shows then either.

It must have been first mentioned in B&S otherwise I wouldn't have known about it, none of my friends at that time would have told me.

It would be nice if any recordings turn up though, I recall the signal being a bit like Luxembourg in that it came and went quite a bit, but it opened up a world of music to me that I wouldn't have been able to hear otherwise.

  9. I remember this getting plays in the late 60's on UK HMV, it wouldn't have been very old at the time.

Can't say as it was ever popular enough to get booted or anything. As Jerry says, the record was pressed up at different plants in the USA, and both logos were used around that time.

You can still see both label styles on this records around today.

  10. Just to add a little more to this, there's at least 3 different mixes of the Tyrone Davis recording of this song.

The LP itself and the Dakar 45 - the LP just being longer than the 45

The the Roulette release with Eddie Holman's 'Hey there lonely girl' on the flip side. - This one is the same backing track as the Dakar but without the horns and added female backing singer.

The MCA release with Eddie Holman as above - Same backing track but without the horns and no female backing singer. this one has a much lower sound to the recording.

The Goldies  release, also having Eddie Holman on the flip. - This one is the same recording as the MCA release but this time it's a much louder recording so the instruments can be heard easier.
