Did you by any chance know a guy from Nottingham called 'Kip', think he was half Greek? Fairly big fella always one for a laugh. I used to knock about with him during my visits to Nottingham Soul nights.

Yeah me too but mainly Nottingham, Leicester, Peterborough, Cambridge, Norwich, Boston (Lincs) and St.Ives in Cambridgeshire. I don't go to many nowadays.

Are you from Nottingham mate? No Pete, originally from London (Hackney) now living in King's Lynn...but I been to Nottingham All-nighters loads of times during the 70's/80's and early 90's...maybe you've seen me in one?

First two during my Suedehead/Skinhead days 1979 was into Northern big time and Ska/Reggae... This one from a Northern night during the 1980s....(me on the right) This is a fairly recent one with her indoors....

Paul r, you just reminded me of something similar... Whilst in Tenerife 2 weeks back there was a bar advertising a 'Soul Singer' on tonight 'Classic Soul' was the sub headline. Me the missus and kids went in there and a black guy around 40 years old came on stage. Good voice, not bad and singing the usual tunes. Then he asked for requests and I was going to say Jackie Wilson 'Sweetest Feeling' but I thought no, that's too easy. "How about something by Chuck Jackson"? I asked, "who?" was his reply so I said "well if you don't know who he is then you're not a real Soul man".... It was all taken in jest really but surely if you're really into Soul then you'd know who Chuck Jackson is... wouldn't you?

That's every week here in King's Lynn now!

Nice one, it's the flip of 'Motown Feeling' which I only have on the CBM compilation on Ember. It's virtually all JA Soul but oddly titled 'In Reggae Time'? Nice cover

Had to laugh, really, at this quote from Alan Hazan (producer of some of Dora's records). You can imagine it.... In any event, the music background really turned out well and all the musicians were anxious to discover who the singer would be. I could see the disappointment on their faces when Ms. Hall walked into the studio and took her place behind the vocal mike. Jack Nitzsche looked especially disappointed. We had really come up with a terrific background recording and now, everyone felt it would probably be for nothing. Since I knew from the beginning who was going to sing the songs, I simply continued my work as the producer of the session. After the musicians left, I spent a couple of hours getting the best I could from the lady. In a way I admired Ms. Hall for having the courage to follow her dream no matter what and, as far as I was concerned, her husband had hired me to do a job and I was doing it. That's why it's called the music business. BTW: The musicians involved were 'The Wrecking Crew'.

Yes quite right. I have used some of their tracks for my JA Soul selections, including on my latest compilation...

Here's the next 5 CD's I did. This isn't a sales pitch just showing off some of my collection as all these tracks are recorded off 45's or LP's that I own. I appreciate some may not be 100% Jamaican Soul (as opposed to UK Soul with British singers of Jamaican descent).

I'll post up all the track listings (as photos) on here tomorrow ok.

Long before Trojan did their 'Work Your Soul' CD I was doing my own Jamaican Soul compilations. This one was my first and I used to dish them out when I ran a Ska/Reggae fanzine, many people had copies and it was very popular, you can see by the track listing it was fairly similar to the one Trojan put out.... I've since done 12 volumes of the stuff so there's plenty out there!!

I must have missed when Court's brother visited this site so, after listening to 'Phoenix' I gather Court is white? I'd never have guessed years ago when I heard 'Try To Think...' but did start to wonder when I found a copy of this 45 on a boot sale....

The band are actually Cashman, Pistilli & West (and obviously some tight rhythm section). 3 white guys who had an album on ABC and various other 45's on ABC....here's an example from 1968...

Some of her tunes were arranged and conducted by H.B. Barnum....pedigree right there!
