A lot of love here on the 14th Feb tonight, ❤ Man love, self love, beer love, love for the Yum Yums.Maybe it needs to get the first one of the year out of the way before it can get in the groove many thought the good biscuits were kept in the tins.
What a great way to start the year, at St Mary's soul second outing, well attended by senior delinquents, entertained by class djs. This place will become the new Gliderdrome when the old one gets shut down by environmental health. Compare this - easy to get to, easy parking, clean toilets, well run bar, good sound system, no double decking! Not having to pay for a modern room that's not there (what's that all about?). This soul club is a great place to meet like minded people, it even has a resident tech trooper on stage. Get to the next one early, we weren't there at the start and it was already packed.
The word iconic seems to be overused these days, but not when it comes to the glider, great instant atmosphere as soon as you walked in, greeted by the Duo on the decks then 30 years a dj Martin one of Boston favourites, Billy brought all the right tunes for the crowd is he psychic? Dave brought his northern dancers, the Bassettlaw djs brought us some cracking tunes that we rarely get to hear this way, gents toilet not so iconic broken and dirty .
Great night it was organised well all the dj's seem to raise the game with good music, beer only 2.50 a glass we need more events like this.
Haven't been here before but people in the know said to get there early to catch the first DJ WILLOW, she did not disappoint and played a superb set, in particular playing Gene Chandler followed by Drifter, Ray Pollard, and other gritty northern tunes. Smart move as it set the scene, but later the momentum was lost. Motown lovers were well provided for. Take a coat as the place was like a fridge, due in part to the front door being left open for the tabbers' smoke fumes. Beer prices and staff were good value.
A big salute to Neil for organising a good event, class dj's playing we've been here before tunes, one dj advertised on the flyer was Awol from the decks but was found present and incorrect at the overpriced bar, sound a bit to much bass but OK ,venue easy to find and no smell of damp.
The Empress Ballroom is the local Impersonation Palais, tonight was soul night, with the d.j.s trying to do their best Richard Searling. However star of the event was Bar. Staff and the Brooms. Cleaning up the dance floor they were Outstanding . The verdict , poor venue management and unbalanced sound system.
Great event, lush place, well organised stayed in the Northern room most of the night 100 mph from the start.
First visit to this club, was a good night all D.J.s played tight sets ,I believe one was absent, good bar and parking, will be back.
First off I don't think the W.I were involved with this fiasco ,they will probably be grateful for any money leftover, the event had been hijacked by ?? who supplied faulty equipment with 'Hecknical' problems, it didn't help having 5 players of records on the stage trying to sort out at the same time, disco light switch fiddler found the button. The annual hunt for the burnt hot dog began at 3, local people in the know participated well barely able to contain their excitement, after this the box marked Reject Records for Holbeach came out with gems from tenpole tudor and Lulu among the collection gasping for breath on the belt slipping deck. Plenty of carcinogenic talc was used to encourage the well dressed 60s/Mod dancers on to the floor. Summary: a poor show by the organisers
Attention shy soul scene stealers, in baking if you get the ingredients right the cake will bake itself, so too will a event ,Mr Scarfe has proved himself a star Baker, mixing venue, parking with a table spoon of Tony, a dollop of Dave, and a cupful of Chris. There is only one criticism,I wish they could have found a smile in the dressing up box for the bar man.
  1. Get ready cos we're gonna swing we're going going going to a .?? obscure R n B happening ...?.? dj playing to the faithful 7 leaving glum puzzled looking faces among the dwindling crowd of N S dancers on their Saturday night out.
  2. Good event,great tunes,warm welcome .
  3. We felt like we had been jimmy riddled on as we were promised Northern Soul, which in our experience is quite frequently upbeat, danceable tunes. What we actually got were in the main very obscure records which were a bit monotonous. Did rate the tall fella though as he did play Northern as we know it.
  4. To the Stute soul club, yes we might be back, good floor fillers with lots of dancers.
