Hi, I’m a Northern Soul fan, I’ve done a lot of DJing over the years and even been a dancer in a TV ad for a soul compilation!

  1. Does anyone know if other artists covered the Paul Anka track When We Get There? There’s a version by Kiki Dee, it’s OK but a bit slow. It seems like the kind of track that would’ve been versioned by other artists or vocal groups. Anyone know any?
  2. Sounds amazing, what great tunes you played back then!
  3. Great examples of the records I’m talking about. Judge Dread definitely wasn’t getting radio airplay back then so just as well that he was getting plenty of his records played out at fairs!
  4. As a fan of Northern Soul I also really like old classic fairground rides. As a kid growing up in the 70’s Motown, Northern and classic reggae were the music that you heard at fairs though the big speakers on rides and my earliest memories of when I first heard the music would’ve been at travelling fairs. Last week I rode a classic vintage ride called the Moon Rocket and noticed this sign. “Motown is your town” (see pic). Over the years I’ve seen lots of references to soul, ska and even the Mod scene incorporated into fairground art. Anyone else noticed this connection or got any examples of this or feel that certain soul tunes are definitely fairground records?
  5. Every track I’ve heard on this label is a killer! Dream My Heart and Stop Overlooking Me, great tunes and from what I know the warehouse burnt down in a riot so the records are pretty rare!
  6. This sounds like the ones on the Shrine label (to me anyway!) it’s got that raw sound and sounds like an expensive record! Hitch
  7. Yay, thanks, it’s amazing how you can be into this stuff for years and still keep discovering new records!
  8. Yay, cheers man! What a tune, just blasting it out on Spotify, didn’t know this one!
  9. Hiya, just recently joined the group…. a question for all you soul fans. Kim Weston - Looking For The Right Guy and Barbara Lee - My My Sweet Love both sound a lot like My Guy. I really like these records but wondering if there are more like this that I don’t know? I’d love to hear some new versions or “soundalike” tracks of this classic if there are more out there! Hitch
