Tip Of The Iceberg? More To Come Or Scraping The Barrel?
Dazdakin replied to ImberBoy's topic in All About the SOUL
Nobody but nobody knows more about the general vastness that there is to know than Butch......me thinks. -
yeah thats it!! Value? rare?

Did we ever get to know who it was actually by? don't think i can remember hearing it played since the last time he did.

Ok then, lets have a proper chittychat about what EXACTLY northern soul is, and all it's sub groups. My idea of what NS is, is its not a genra of music of the likes of country&western or reggie as the artists that make the above styles of music do so in the knowledge that it will without any doubt end up being what it sets out to be, this goes for all other styles of music. Whereas nobody ever set out to create a piece of NS. This is why there are so many groups/artists/bands in our music that have about as much soul in them as there is on a tramps shoe. Northern Soul is what we, the people that follow it, call it, it is without doubt a strange one to quantify but to us who follow it, its easy with our trained ears to tell even if its Paul Anka/ Dean Parrish/ Vickie Baines/ Beverly Ann on the vocals, we know. Northern Soul is beat, pure and simple. Tamla Motown is a record label, nothing more. There are different styles within our music and far more complex than just 60's/70's/80's...... My definition is as follows: 60's Doh! says what it is. Rare 60's in my opinion is a 45 thats been around for ever but since first played has remained rare and hard to obtain, most importantly has never been booted. 60's "newie" a 45 thats only just been discovered despite the yrs inbetween but most importantly has that required beat, it doesnot have to be megger rare. Oldies are 45 that have stood the test of time, been well known and loved by all and been available to the masses as pressings or the like. 6T's not used as a terminology much these days but was very big in the 80's. Used mainly to describe a certain style of sound played in the ealier years of the 100 club. 60's Mafia, not so much a style of music but a select group of DJ's playing there tunes at stafford/Oddfellow's/Scotland, but mainly playing what was then and today called 60's newies. Modern, normally assosiated with a 45 thats from the same decade as it's being played in, whenever that was. Simple really if your on or within our scene, time for an asprin if your not.

Aw grow up will you. I have already apolagies for that posting and stated at the time i was wrong. I said sorry to the dj who i slated, because i was wrong......end of. This posting has nothing to do with rugby so why even mention it. What i will say is this though. I am not ignorant or rude.....normally! but i will be and am when i get slagged for voicing an opinion that others maynot like.......tuff Its about opinions, i have mine, people have theirs, thats the way it is and should be. The whole point of this is i am sick and tired of going to nighters, northern soul nighters and hearing50's mid tempo doo wop bordering on rock n roll, sub standard RnB, and general nonsense, yes i know murial day was fooking rubbish along with footsee but you all know the type and kind of music i am refering to when i say oldies, and yes all northern was at some point in time a newie, the thing is if its still played today its for a reason, it was good then and its good today, i promise you will not be sayin that about most of the "new" stuff played that is being called new today. How many 45's that have been new in the last 10yrs have been booted for the masses Eh?? So thats me done, i leave you all to roll with it and make of it what you will. Thanks to all those who pm'd me to agree with the general idea of what i was sayin........there was many, shame they felt they could not agree with me and post at the same time, but hey ho you cant have it all. thanks. Mr. Dakin. a complete dino who loves nothing better than a packed venue, good known sounds, where people stay until the end and wish it was not over..........jesus is that too much for you lot to understand. Its called northern soul.......not doo wop..not RnB...not rock n roll. -

everytime you reply you fook up what you read and make your own mind up, i dont slag people off or abuse them in anyway but please get a brain cell. My whole point in me sayin what you have picked me up on is to get the point across that the records that are NOT rare command huge money in todays scene and are played regually, yet i payed no more than £50 for any of them, so the points others have made about rare and expensive dont wash, they was once cheapish and obtainable. -

Ok i admit it, My look back first post was meant to be just that, then i went bed and tried to remember the last time i had such a fab night, and you know what, it really was way back when, when WE ALL remember packed nighters, people actually running to the dance floor!! NOT having the room to dance!! being utterly wankered and staying till the end!! It just struck a cord that all this happened because of the music in the main hall being played was top draw oldies!!.......all night, with no 3am till 4am slow down with semi known rare as rockin horse shit rammell!! I wont go back on what i have said as i believe its true, I DO LIKE AND DANCE AND EVEN BUY the newer stuff but Sat. night just gave everyone who attended a "remember this was was it was like EVERY nighter, every weekend" kind of feeling..........and i aint ashamed of saying i wish there was more nighters like this in todays scene. Oh well........dream on eh!! Next topic is politics Labour/Conservative/ Liberal (old enough to remember them) The can of worms will surly spill out now eh!! Tory all the way me. MODS: permission to use this thread to start this new topic......Please. -

Mate have been to them all! Lifeline/ Middleton/ Burnley/Bidds and IF you read my posts properly you will see that i have not slagged any of them off, far from it, like you say each to their own, so why is it i cant have my personal taste without people sayin i am living in the past, if its what i like then thats it really is it not. So you sayin your correcting my infactual comments is as you put it "utter Bollocks" YOUR OPINION is unless you are the oricle or something your view,it dont make it fact. It just makes it your view. And why oh why do the oldies played at YOUR events have to be of the rarer variety? what makes a £10 tune more acceptable to be played than a £500 pound tune? i have no idea. And besides most of your expensive oldies in todays market are not even rare, i know i have had them and sold them. Not rare!! Many many copys about : cecil washington / Tomangoes/ servicemen/ paris/ Dog Rare is the likes of jimmy burns / william powell / eddie parker/ nabay top of my head there must be £20K in that little lot just there, yet they all been bootlegged or repressed, and just a side issue i have owned all but three over the years (originals) -

Dazdakin replied to Dazdakin's topic in All About the SOUL
THE best tune that you could call a "newie" to be played over the last few years is the "perisians" twinkle little star or the traditions whichever floats your boat, but even this tune aint new its been around for many many yrs just never played. Doh! is what your sayin not what i said??? its been around for yrs.......I KNOW!! -

ok, thats it, i never slagged off anyone in person and nor would i, i have the same taste in music as we all have on here and its called northern soul and if its any good ( by "it's" i mean the currant crop of "rare" tunes) then yes they will eventually make it to the main halls of any venue. Me thinks you got me all misunderstood and think i only like the BITD tunes that we all know and love, you could not be more wrong. My point is this, all northern was at some point when first discovered was a "newie" and that even goes for your main stream oldies, at some point they would have been played for the first time and in 99% of those times it would have been many yrs after the record was made. Now from what i am hearing today compared to say Stafford then there is NO contest, the sounds that was played at Stafford have now gone on to become part of the "oldies" scene because they had Dancability, great thumping backing vocals, arrangements that just grabbed a hold of you and forced you to listen. Its just not enough on its own to be a good soul record as it appears from todays new plays. Now all of that said its only my opinion, i do not try to influance others on what they should or should not listen and dance to, but what i will say is that you will NEVER get the atmosphere from this new stuff if it was to be played in the main room at Stoke and to my way of thinking its all about the atmosphere that makes a nighter so so or just plain fooking brilliant as it was on Sat eve. I may have this all tits up and arse backwards, but please dont slag me because i like big venues, big crowd, big atmosphere, and most of all big tunes played, is that not what its all about dancing your tits off to the high keys, lou ragland, malibus, yes even rock pop blue eyed "manys the slip" or is this something else i have got wrong.........i dont think so. THE best tune that you could call a "newie" to be played over the last few years is the "perisians" twinkle little star or the traditions whichever floats your boat, but even this tune aint new its been around for many many yrs just never played. The point being come up with tunes of that quality and oomph then your onto a winner. Educate me please!! -
Yes my mistake it was 89' not 98' just a typo error. And i agree with the person that said its a joke at that price ( £2000 ) And it dont matter if you dont see them around anymore what does matter is the records rarity or not as the case maybe in terms of a value. You dont ever see for sale Fluffy Fulana and i would say its ten times rarer than CW but it would not fetch 2K..........so what is exactly going on with record prices? what does give a record its intrinsic value? it certainly is not its rarity thats for sure. Could start a whole new thread on this one, would be interesting to see what people think.

Dazdakin replied to Dazdakin's topic in All About the SOUL
Ooo hang on a min, i never said that lifeline or any other venue that caters for that "other" style of music should not be, thats my point it should be, but please dont try to "educate" us dino's into something that we dont want, you got your venues we got ours lets leave it at that and lets not mix the two up into one happy nighter as it dont work. After all you can always go into the main room and have a good night whereas myself i cannot go into your room and do the same as to me IMHO thats all it is an opinion, the stuff your listening to these days is what was called tape music, good for listening to and chillin to on a long drive home from a nighter but never good enough to be played at venues. IMHO. -
Just woke up and after my initial posting on the night i feel more needs to be said as some of you just dont get it yet. The "rare room" as one of you put it at no time was as you say banging and it really does need to stay in the "other" room and not make it to the main room. The main room last night was the way it was because it stuck to the tried and tested method of playing well known kick ass oldies. I may well be stuck in the past but the thing is the past works!! You know as well as i do that if anyone DJ last night strayed from the "oldies" path they would have cleared the floor, thats why even Butch never bothered in trying "new" stuff on the main hall. Quality set of quality oldies he played : Al Kent/Tommy Bush the ones for me that really got me movin' and a groovin'.....and you know what?? i know he loved every minute of that main hall. The guy has records and knowledge of records that most could and only ever dream of.......but a simple set of back to the basics worked!! Dedicated nighters for the rare and underplayed stuff exist for that purpose and IF there is any sounds that are good enough to live in the oldies sets of main stream dj's then spot on, but dont ram them down our throats because a dj has payed X amount of £'s so it must be good.........wrong, yes it may well be rare and yes in a collectors market fetch alot of money but those two factors dont mean that the 45 is any good and even deserve to be played at any nighter. Kings Hall is what it is and it has tried to cater for all tastes over the years but last night i got a sense that it finally got it as well, proper oldies kick ass and make a venue of its status what it should be everytime it opens its doors, and thats a sweaty culdrum of hundreds of souls having a stormer. Last night was one of the best nighters i have EVER been to and i been going 27yrs....i know what i like and what i dont like, at the time Stafford struck the same cord with me although i went to most of them purly because the upstairs oldies room was ace, having said that most of the stuff played in that main room Have crossed over into main stream dj's sets and thats because they was still quality dance toons that very easily were able to stand the test of time, but here is the main point about todays "new" stuff, it just has not got that bish bosh wollop you will fookin dance kind of thing going on except the odd one or two unlike Staffords majority of stuff that was played.
-
Oh please dont as its killing me. I once sold just about my entire collection to Pat (top man, Stafford wont be Stafford without him!!) many many rare goodies one being Cecil Washington.................£40!!............ok it was in 1998 but still........its defo NOT £2000 rare!

Frank Wilson -"he Who Shall Not Be Named" On Ss
Dazdakin replied to Rob Wigley's topic in All About the SOUL
I can remember BITD when Chuck Wood aka "Al Wilson"!! 7 Days...... was a derided piece of northern soul when in fact its a top notch out and out dancer that ALWAYS without fail fills any dance floor these days, unlike BITD (early 80's through to the end of the 90's) when any DJ who dared to play it was surly asking for his P45!! -
