Groundwork Young Roots Project Runs Until December 2005 For Wigan Youngsters 15 to 21 Years
Former Wigan Casino Legend ,DJ Russ Winstanley Is Spear-heading a new youth program which has been introduced by leading environmental charity groundwork Wigan & Chorley.
The 'Young Roots' project has been kindly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (H.L.F) and aims to introduce young people in and around the bourgh to their heritage, through the medium of music, media and performing arts.
The theme of this project is Wigan Casino and Northern Soul's contribution to what Wigan is today, and Russ is looking for a number of volunteers to hep delve into the culture that took the town and beyond by storm in the 70's. The team will then be split off into groups to work on an array of different projects. For instance: DJ'ing, music, performance and technology, art and design, fashion, events management, marketing, journalism and much more.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for youngsters in the borough to join an action packed project, covering the much loved soul scene, and the Wigan Casino days of the seventies. The whole project will culminate in a northern soul event, or hopefully a series of them, which the volunteers will co-organise with me. Northern Soul is now even more popular than ever in Britain and Europe, it is now the music scene in Australia and Japan. The 'Young Roots Soul' project really is a chance of a lifetime experience, to be part of a music scene never to be repeated! Join our team today," said Groundwork's Young Roots Project Officer, Russ Winstanley.
Russ will be able to give first hand, unique insight into this fascinating and still very popular music scene and participants will be able to join him for major soul events, media briefings with radio and television, and a chance to see the widely acclaimed play 'Once upon a time in Wigan'.
Tony Jones, HLF's Regional Manager for the North West, commented, "HLF is dedicated to opening up our heritage to everyone and we are delighted to fund this project that will allow the youth of Wigan to research and understand a local heritage asset that influenced the nation. This project is one of the first in Wigan to benefit from the Young Roots programme and we look forward to supporting many more in the future".
