www.209radio.co.uk Archived...listen back https://209radio.co.uk/shows/profile...w=souldiscovery Top Choices for 2006 Mick O'Donnell / Soul@209radio.co.uk Tel: 07810142911 1.David Sea "Let's Just get together" (Rabbit Factory) inc 2.David Ruffin 'You Oughta Know Me' (Hip-oSelect) 3.Marcell & the Truth "Breathe Love" (Basement Boys) 4.Willie Walker "Memphisapolis" (Haute) 5.David Sea "Stay In My Arms" (Park Place). 6.Al Lindsey "Sorry" (Pulsating) 7.Unified Tribe "Love's on my mind" (Magic Muzik) 8.Gina Darby "Yes" (Gad) 9.Donny Hathaway "What a woman really means" (Atlantic) 10.Norman Hutchins " I Really Love You" (JDI) 11.Roy Roberts "Let our love last forever" (Rock House) 12.Otis Jackson Sir "Look What You Have Done (To My Heart)" (USA Traffic) 13.Jay Proctor "Baby I love you"(Forevermore) 14.Jesse James"You're all in my dreams" (Gunsmoke) 15.Hezron "27 Years" (Hard Shield) cd 16.Leon Beal "You're the one" (12th note) 17.Steve Perrilloux "Do the right thing" (Custom) 18.Curt Jones "Is it" (Red Virgo) cd 19. J. Blackfoot feat Lenny Williams "I'm just a fool for you" (Right Now) cd 20. Dee Bradley "That's why I love you so" (Evejim) cd Five 7' from 2006 1.Prince Ellis "Love will make you go wild" (Ellis) 2.Mystic "That's the kind of love" (ART) 3.McKinley Sandifer "You're a winner" (Cotton) 4.Sharon Revoal "Reaching for our star" (Forte) 5.Fauns Bell "Gift of love"(Wave) ********************************************* Brian Goucher/ www.soul-essence.co.uk 1.Marcell & The Truth " Maybe I'm not the man" 2.Otis Jackson " Look what you have done to my heart" These two arrived at the right time for this list, they are both constant plays here at home, both went down a storm at the November "Room at the back" gig in Derby. Both albums are full of nice surprises 3.Willie Walker & The Butanes........ Can't separate any tracks, the whole album is a perfect example of real soul, real instruments, a genuine artist come craftsman, you should be ashamed of yourself if you don't have this, and I know plenty who have ignored it......WHY? 4.Sage "I'm alive" I'm not proud of this but this is a big money tune with only 5 copies in existence, and normally I wouldn't have touched this with a barge pole, could have bought a hundred other great soul records for what this cost BUT.....it is the dogs bollocks of a dancer, and only the rareity will keep it from being a monster tune, I know where the other four went, and they wont surface for a long long time. 1977, what a great year it was. 5.Frankie Newsome "Taunting Love" I decided way back in January that I was going to spin this at every oportunity and try and get it away, its happening, the dancefloor reaction at the Frobisher was phenominal and at the Solar night out too. It will soon be time to file this one away, I only need to here another jock spin it then I'll move onto the next one.A stunning dancer that should be in everyone's collection. 6.Anthony Hamilton "Pass me over" From the moment I first heard this I knew I was in the presence of greatness, and many months later, it still is one of the all time great cuts. Majestic production, with moody passionate vocals, I can't get enough of this. 7.Latoya London "More" Another new release from early 06 that has stood the test of time, likened to an early Gladys Knight by the many who have this, played it in the lounge at Yarmouth and had one seasoned collector in tears, cant say much else, still playing it, still loving it........... 8.Vic Marcel " You still got me" This is my current rave, and the one that will succeed Frankie Newsome, I intend to stick with this for next 6 months or so, it will go, it has everything, the crossover posse will cream there pants when they get to here it.1969 perfection, strings, hammond, piano and some great vocals................. 9.Bobby Hutton ? Can't remember the name of this, but Mike Charlton played it at the "Room at the back" and said it was brand spanking new, and that it was going to come out on a seven, probably the best thing Iv heard all year, desperately trying to get one.Great vocals over a very modern subdued backing, superb stuff.................. 10.Jaheim "125th" This might surprise a few of you, one of the great modern voices that is still to give the perfect album but on this socially concious piece he's in top form, another regular play here at home and one I feel many have missed. Better get on the case then ............ ********************************************* Mark Hougton / a New Chapter markh.realsoul@blueyonder.co.uk 1. Norman Hutchins "I Really Love You" (JDI) Memorable from the first play and still sounding just as good at the end of the year this is upbeat, feel good soul at it's very best .A great tune featuring some top quality vocals from Norman. 2. George Soule "Something Went Right" (Zane) This just pipped George,s amazing version of "My World Tumbles Down" as my favourite track from a superb LP. A timeless piece of midtempo magic. Vintage Southern Soul for 2006. 3.Persuaders "A Woman Was Made To Be Loved" (It`s Soul Time). Another great comeback in 2006,this time from soul legends The Persuaders. This is a more modern production combined with a quality song which builds and builds and is then topped off which some outstanding vocalising . 4. Bobby Warren "Tme Has Come For Us To Be Free (Kon-Kord) First heard this played on the Soul Discovery Show and i immediately set about getting myself a copy. At the right venues this 80`s sounding dancer could take off big time in 2007. 5.Roy Roberts "If can't Put It Out (Rock House) A simple but effective midtempo track which would have went down a storm at the early Soul Essence Weekenders alongside the indies from Johnny Taylor,Shirley Brown, Carl Sims etc. 6.William Bell "Treat her right (like a lady)" (Wilbe) Soul veteran William Bell hit`s the mark in 2006 with this happy throwback dancer. 7.Omar Cunningham "Made My Move" (End Zone) This lovely fingersnapper with Omar on top form vocally shows how Contempory Southern Soul should sound. 8.Otis Jackson "Look What You Have Done To My Heart" (CDP) It`s amazing how some "forgotten " artists seem to reappear from nowhere. At the latter end of this year Otis released a Cd with this being the cream cut. A very nice well produced midtempo dancer with Otis`s rich voice still in fine form 9.Mic Gillette Feat Lenny Williams "I Like That" (BKA) Georgeous ballad from Trumpet/Trombonist Mic Gillette featuring the unmistakable voice of Lenny Williams 10.Theodis Ealey "Please Let Me In" (Ifgam) Sounding like a mixture of Theodis`s own "If you leave me" track and Tyrone Davis`s "Let me in" .Tracks like this help to keep Traditional Soul music alive in the 21st century. Bubbling under Willie Walker, Brown`s Bag, Jon Pierre Gee, Cee J Jackson, Vince Montana feat Double Exposure, Bernard McGee, Jackie Payne, Rick Lawson, OB Buchana, Stage 3,Charlie Brown, Melissa Young, Exoutics, James Day, David Sea, Jesse J ********************************************* John Ridley www.sirshambling.com 1.Candi Staton "You Don't Have Far To Go" (Honest Jon's) The cream cut from Candi's triumphant return to secular recording, the "His Hands" CD. When did you last hear a soul track featuring a stand-up bass? . 2.Little Joe Blue "Just Your Fool" (Evejim) The late Joe Valery's storming minor keyed cry of pain from his "Dirty Work Going On" set. Superb tortured vocals a setting of strong horns and strings. 3.Ben Moore "Better To Have It" (Proper) The title track from Bobby Purify's comeback CD. Lovely country soul - a real throwback. 4.Tony Gregory "I Need You Now" (Sonic Sounds) One of the very best Caribbean soul singers with a delicate 80s ballad. Wonderfully modulated vocals make this a real treat for the ears. 5.Gene Miller "Didn't We Do It" (Baytown) Not the Memphis jack-of-all-trades, this Gene Miller came from the West Coast and this may well be his only 45. A 70s deep ballad of immense power. 6.Joe Simon "I'm In The Mood For You" (Spring) A classic from one of soul music's most subtle vocalists. Every time you listen you hear something new in his nuances and phrasing. Immaculate backing from the Muscle Shoals Swampers. 7.Aaron Neville "For Your Precious Love" (Passport) The best version of this everlasting love song from the exquisite voice of New Orleans finest stylist. 100% joy. 8.Gee Gee Shinn "Devil Of A Girl" (Montel Michelle) The best blue eyed 45 I've head in 2006. Shinn's impersonation of Bobby Bland is uncannily fine - and the usual impeccable backing from the Boogie Kings is "Duke" to a T. 9.Checkers "Come Back Home" (Mercury) A cracking group deep obscurity from New York complete with wailing soprano sax. 10.Ike Porter "Where There's A Will There's A Way" (Anla) Anla is a label sought after by both funk and deep enthusiasts. This is one of the rarest from the Louisiana concern. Strong deep soul. ********************************************* Rod Dearlove/ www.voicesfromtheshadows.com Tel: 01964631457 1.Willie Walker & Butanes "Memphisapolis" 2.Candi Staton "His Hands" 3.
