  9. Have you not got many mates steptoe? , joke! I Disagree about the records not being important, essentially it's all about what records are being played. What makes a good dj a quality dj? For me it's passion and charisma behind the decks. Sometimes it looks like the dj doesn't actually believe in or love the record he/she is playing which does have a effect on the crowd as the dj is the main source of entertainment for however long the spot is. I get the impression a lot of the time records are played for the wrong reasons such as rarity + how much it costs! Just my Opinion of course
  10. Really? I'm not sure i'd want it any faster otherwise it'd be a bit of a nightmare to dance too
  11. Are you sure the original acetate is a different cut to the one released on the cd? I got a soundfile sent to me which was apparently from the original acetate and it sounds very similar. The only thing I'd say was the sound is slighty louder form the acetate, louder horns etc, not very noticable though. The soundfile was sent to me by a well respected Northern dj so i would of thought he would know which is which Cheers
  12. I've got some wicked mod jazz sleazy records that I sometimes wonder about playing out Ernie Feilds - Workin Out Noble Watts -Teen Scene Willis Jackson - Swimming Home baby Billy Hawkes - Oh Baby (always gets a spin, sheer class) also just waiting for a mental latin version of wade in the water, it really will sound awesome in a club, it's not very well known and extremely hard to get your hands on. It Will be getting an airing in a main room in August, wahey!!!
  13. You're right Joan everyone has different tastes and thats the way it should be!
  14. I hear you mate my point exactly
  15. Yeah all my big records are just carvers with look a like labels on, it's much cheaper that way! I'm a OVO enthusiast and have strong views about people playing boots but you have to admit it's a grey area! I'm not going to mention the record in question but a freind of mine has recently gave me a carver from the original acetate and I fully intend to play it out because it's fookin brillaint and dead rare. I know of big dj's who have played cuts from acetates 'country girl, good news, switch around' etc. I'd be interested to hear your views on that? Callum
  16. Surprised your selling this mate , It certainly done the buisness on saturday night, the floor was rocking. When i play it i always drop it next to John & Carol - Get your Hat it has a very simliar almost the same backing riff during the chorus! Cheers
  17. I''ve got a carver of this and sometimes play it out. If it's unreleased then why not?
  18. Keith Curtis top tune I never liked it at first but after heraing it out loud in a club a few times that sax break really does kick ass. Thought about having a bid on manships but snapped back into reality, thank god! Coventry is fucked mate I wouldn't bother. there's shit loads of decent nights in surrounding area's such as Move On, Bidds + Lifeline also there's too many 80's revival I want to kick your head in mods/skinheads. I used to knock about with these types before i discovered proper soul music instead of the jam/specials/who! Callum
  19. I was intreagued(spelling?) when i seen all-nigters Coventry mentioned growing up as as midlander partying hard in mod/indie/soul clubs as a youngster back in the day (2002-2004ish) Bloody hell it really does make the whole thing seem all olde wilde when i have such a strong connection as close to home as coventry (not now i live in newcastle). 1986 that was the year i was born and i'm now going to clubs or such as burnley/lifeline where cliff steele/butch are still dj-ing , CRAZY!. However I do understand that these boys have been in them game a long time and have records i could only dream of owning. I mean butch playing one of my fav's keith curtis at 100 club last week as his opening record, that must be worth 2k at least! The whole soul scene thing is just mental but i do love it!
  20. I think it's a great tune, a real nice mod jazz dancer. It sounds great played out loud + if a dj can drop it in at the right time it really does hit the spot I payed £70 for mine which i think is about right.
  21. You cant beat abit of Sharon Jones, a proper soul sister! I've got a few of her tracks that slip into a set no problem I was lucky enough to see her live at koko's in london last month and she blew me away. I'd go as far as saying better than when i went to go and watch the legend that is stevie wonder !
  22. It's what you call a silent disco, alot of the students have nights like this. All headsets play different types of music then they all dance in different styles, it's quite amusing to watch .
  23. I'm with you mace, never seem to get any records for cheap these days unless of course they've not quite had thier day yet, Rene Bloch $30, Ray Rodriguez $20. Although I have just seen a £1000+ massive soul record pass through the bay today for $0.99 I forgot to bid and the seller ended the auction early apparently he ended up selling it to his neighbour , sounds a wee bit dodgy to me. I'm working on it trying to negotiate a deal (fingers crossed)
  24. Totally agree with you on that one mate. I was there at the hot wax all-nighter and have to say the upstairs Rnb/Mod room was rocking. I love my northern + rare soul but everytime i ventured downstairs i was really quite dissapointed, Maybe these dj's have been doing it to long and have grown stale??? That's what i love about Rnb rooms they really mix it up from early soul right through to latin (as long as it all flows together nicely). The main factor about this night was the venue. It made soul/RnB music feel super cool! It attracted a good mixture of people younger + more experienced soulies who all mingled and danced creating a buzzing atmosphere (upstairs). The wardrobe is a very smart bar/club in a city centre with a kicking sound system the two things alot of soul nights/all-nighters lack IMO! If more soul/Rnb nights could find these types of venues which i know is difficult as sometimes all the bar/club owners think about is money also you've also got the massive problem of all the other 1000's of soul nights that are on which will always affect numbers. Venues are so important in getting younger people into soul music! Anyway rant over it was a great night and i must say the Rnb room definitely was the better of the two even with ginger taylor and keith money dj-ing in the northern room .
