Articles: Helen Pereira - Queen Of The Go-Go
Mick Holdsworth replied to Pep's topic in Front Page News & Articles
Ian, I spoke to you yesterday and told you I wouldn't be posting anything on a public forum, however I know in my heart that I have to. I've known both you and Helen since the mid-seventies, although in the last 20 years since I got back into the scene again, our friendship grew to the point where you both classed me as "family", an honour I always felt was wonderful and warming. Helen told me on more than one occassion that I was like a brother to her, and Helen was indeed the sister I never had. We would always meet up during the week and go to Pub quizzes (we even one once, although I think the music round helped on that, being 100% Motown that week!!) When Ryan came along we would still go out, although alternately. One week I would go to the pub with you, whilst Helen stayed in, and the next week, I would go out with Helen. We had so much fun on those occasions, drinking a little to much and talking about everything and anything. Always laughing. I have always treasured these times. I can remember one incident, when I brought Helen home after one of our mid week sessions. We sort of 'bounced in' the house, well past closing time, talking too loud, laughing at God knows what. I went into the lounge first and Helen followed, nearly tripping over a completely flat floor at the lounge doorway. Quick as a flash, she shouted out "That floors bent!!". It was a priceless comment, and within 5 seconds she had me sn*****ing and somehow thinking that the floor was indeed bent and you should do something about it. "It's not the floor, it's you, you're drunk", you said. "I'm NOT drunk, it's the floor, someone could fall over there". Wonderful !! There is one other time that I remember vividly. In the late nineties, I was on the door at Bretby with Helen and both of us had to fight back a few local troublemakers through a nearly closed door. We managed to get the door closed and just fell about laughing, I think both of us had small bruises and a black eye that night. For years after we would often think of that night and although it should have been solemnity, we always ended up laughing about it. Helen would always be there to help in anything she possibly could, either physical or emotional. On three seperate occasions she spend the best part of a day each time helping me paint my flat, swap out and fit a new carpet, and then a couple of weeks later pull apart a remove an old suite. We were stuck in a door frame for about three hours using bread knives to saw our way through a massive couch. I was all for giving up after ten minutes, but Helen wouldn't have any of that, so somehow, with the bread knives and a hammer, we finally freed it and got it out. If it hadn't been for Helen I would, to this day, still have the old carpet, the old couch, and the old paint. She was also a great comfort to me when my Dad died 6 years ago. She was there for me then as countless other times. I will miss Helen so much, and have been devastated by her passing. She was and always will be, the sister I never had. You and Ryan are always in my thoughts, and my feelings go out to you both so much. All my love Mick -
The funeral of Helen Pereira will be on Thursday 26th April 2012 - 2:00pm at ... St Marys C Of E Church The Rectory Rectory Rd Oldswinford Stourbridge DY8 2HA This will be directly followed by drinks and reminiscences at a pub about 100 yards up the road from the church ... The Labour In Vain 59 Red Hill Stourbridge DY8 1NG In the evening, there will be a Soul Music Remembrance Dance, celebrating the music and dancing life and loves of Helen, and open to everyone, NOW at ... The Connaught Hotel 40 - 50 Tettenhall Road Wolverhampton WV1 4SW 8:30pm - 1:00am It has been necessary to move to the nearby Connaught Hotel for two reasons: because the Mount was insisting that all the DJs have insurance (!?),and a bigger venue is now needed (the Connaught holds 400). Most people know the Connaught Hotel from the many Soul Nights that have been held there over the years. It is a perfect, smart venue with a large, sprung dancefloor which Helen loved dancing on. Any more info, I'll add as soon as I know. Any one wishing to contact Pep - please feel free to ring anytime on 01654 710264 If this post is in the wrong section, MOD's please feel free to move it Thanks Mick Holdsworth ************************************************************************************************** Here is some additional info from Ian ... Flowers are welcome of course delivered to the Church, St. Mary's, Oldswinford, Stourbridge on the morning of her funeral on Thursday 26th April. Interflora and others usually do this kind of thing for well-wishers. Alternatively bring the flowers with you to the church before the service at 2pm. They can also be sent/delivered to Sanderson Funeral Services, Merridale Street, Wolverhampton between now and then. Helen will be lying in the Chapel of Rest at Sandersons on the day before the funeral, for anyone wishing to see her once more. Instead of flowers, charitable donations can be made to Mary Stevens Hospice by way of donations at the church service itself, via a collection being organised by St.Mary's. Nearby Mary Stevens Hospice (where my family was born when it was a maternity hospital in the fifties/sixties) were very amenable to Helen's needs near the end of her life, and provide superb palliative care to cancer victims. They rely on charitable donations. All the hundreds of sympathy cards will be kept and treasured forever by me and Ryan. Thankyou everyone for the many lovely cards and messages within them. Please, anyone who will be sending or bringing cards, can you put your contact details in so I can thank you or keep in touch with you in the months and years to come. I am also looking for any old (or more recent) photos of, or with, Helen in them. Please post them here on Soul-Source or eMail them to: mr.soul@live.co.uk Anyone can phone me on 01654 710264. I love talking to soul friends old and new, and will catch up with many of you soon. Love and great appreciation. XXX Ian ********************************************************************************************

"you Can't Stop A Girl In Love" - The Supremes

Have You A Spare Moment Deep Oo1-Oo2-Oo3
Mick Holdsworth replied to Prophonics 2029's topic in Look At Your Box
Thanks - I saw the labels, that's what made me ask the question. As there's no street listed at all on the "top" scan, it didn't necessarily mean the address was in Chauncey St. The second "bottom" scan is clearly Chauncey St. but I wondered if they just omitted the street name and number in the first scan, or was there some relocation going on within Brooklyn. At the end of the day, it wasn't all that important, it was just seeing the two together that prompted my curiosity. I'm sure that Deep Sounds was indeed at 118 Chauncey St., but just wondered if anyone knew for sure (eg. old photos etc.) Cheers Mick -

Warning This Piece Of Shite Is At It Again Buyers Beware
Mick Holdsworth replied to Raresoul45s's topic in Look At Your Box
I thought that was someone from Marseilles (haven't re-read the thread so apologies if incorrect. This eBay one is located in Japan. -
Simon Soussan used that label (with the Allen Zentz studio address), a lot on the mid-to-late 70's - all those Frank Beverly - She Loves Me (BK Markus) and Sally George - Misunderstanding acetates that were floating about were identical. I say "Sally George" but all the copies I ever saw had the artist scratched out and Sally George was the name attributed to them, either handwritten on the label, or the cover, so it was probably a second generation a made up name. Either way whoever Sally George was, it was probably the same artist as Love You Baby)

What is the "glue" treatment - I can see from the picture that the records are doused in (glue?) - what happens then Cheers Mick
-
Not sure - it's a basic white can with blue writing - afraid my eyes can't read the very fine print with the ingredients these days. It doesn't make the vinyl look much different (unless of course it had visible dirt on it to start with), and it does clean the grooves. That's an RS equivalent of the Maplins one - about the same price too. Cheers Mick
-
Do you mean get a clean recording or actually clean the vinyl? If its the first, there are plenty of bits of software to do this. If you mean the vinyl, there are liquid solutions for specially this, although I use an anti-static foam cleaner (Maplins) that does just as good a job at a fraction of the price

You could ring him up and get it that way

It was someone "like" Karen Young who recorded "Are You Kidding", on UK Mercury (AYK being the other side of Country Girl). Maybe that's what your'e thinking of ?
-
You're right Pete- I was thinking that about 10 minutes after I posted.
-
Great, then that's a good-un
-
I was lucky enough to be "in the know" at the time (early eighties I thought, but apparently 1979)
-
Real ones have "For Promotional Use Only" on the right under the numbers. The boots have "DJ Copy Not For Sale" on the left under the time. Cheers Mick
-
Oh yes Harry, not a boot at all (don't think it was ever booted)
-
The Stemmons Express and Wilbur Walton were actually a different set of boots from the first set (General Assembly etc.) Might be one of the first "bootleg of a bootleg" labels. Cheers Mick
