  1. .....and niece to Plum Duff and Gooseberry Fool? Tempted to say Spotted Dick but that would be tooooo silly.
  2. Dunno, try the conspiracy thread?
  3. I'm afraid it's your connection. Broadband would remove the problem. But if you live in a remote area or don't want to pay for broadband, this is pretty good and cheaper: https://www.onspeed.com/us/index.php John
  4. Can't believe I just read that! And what a timely reminder............ "It's Not The Same" is one of the best records ever made and knocks me for 6 just thinking about it. In fact, I'm off to play it now. Thanks mate - it's just like when visitors come around and dig out old forgotten tracks. John.
  5. Very interesting Gareth, thanks. It should go on to say that he furnished most of my early collection from these visits - for which I shall always be grateful! John.
  6. Sorry, but it is a naff idea. But since the scene seems to be heading the way of wallowing in dewey eyed nostalgia, I'm afraid it just might happen. John.
  7. Absolutely brilliant. 'Nuff said.
  8. Thanks Shane, interesting. Think I'll look out for the album. John.
  9. How 'bout Gladys Knight?
  10. Well of course - Diana Ross can't sing!
  11. Does it for me Dave, as does: Happy - William Bell and I'm So Happy - Prince Phillip Mitchell and Happy - Velvet Hammer. Hmmm, I detect a theme here........ John.
  12. Yes, Ernie Bush, great record. Never really aired much as it was issued too soon (in the days when that stuff mattered). Good point about Contempo though - John Abbey never could get it right could he? Re-issues that were readily available already and how about that mash up re-recording of Tamiko Jones? Still B&S magazine helped redeem matters a tad, if only for Frank Elson - where is he now? John.
  13. Marvin Junior - The Dells and Eddie Levert - The O'Jays
  14. Ha ha! Yes I got the hints about "sell up and f off to country" programme too but I won!!! But tonight is The Apprentice. Hmmm, Alan Sugar or Temptations............I wonder. Good movie but they do all seem to be a bit formulaic don't they (Thinking of "The Five Heartbeats" or "Lady Sings The Blues", same story and much the same characters). Trouble is they never go deep enough - only a book could do that I guess. John.
  15. Hmmmm, looks original to me - but rather too clean and I'm suspicious of seller who says he doesn't know if original or not. Maybe history of record would help. Thanks for pointing it out though - I'm looking for one and Manship's auction got a bit too steep. John
  16. Pete, did you sell discotron? Can you get one of these? John.
  17. Hmmm. ok, it's a dance record. How crap would vocal to Hank Jacobs sound though!!!
  18. Little Henry Lee is brillaint and glad you share my lunacy. Have them on vinyl but will try to get them to you on MP3.
  19. Agree on Bari Track, and how about Strings A Go Go - much better as instrumental.
  20. He has a point. And it was Exus Trek that got most plays originally. How about the vocal to "Lady Lady Lady" - Boogie Man Orchestra (yes I know it's modern and all that), but they too ruin a brilliant instrumental. John.
  21. Those of you that know me will be aware of this little problem and so probably will the record dealers here so apologies, just indulge me. It's my first subject post and hell, it's good and cheap therapy! At my second allnighter (Yate), many years ago I heard the Robin Wilson version of "Better Use Your Head" and was stunned at the vocals, the phrasing, the lyrics, the strings, the beat - everything. A few weeks later, at Wigan, I heard the Little Anthony original - ditto. Then I heard there were other versions and slowly got to hear them at various venues. Yep, you guessed it, I set about buying all of them and think that, as of last July, I am complete. I now have versions by: Robin Wilson, Little Anthony, Dennis D'ell, Marion Ryan, Little Henry Lee, Mel Torme, Fifth Dimension and Rudolph Boyce and The Fantastics (John M, you were right, thel last one is "wierd"!!) Funny, I still get a thrill when playing at least the first 5 of these verions and whenever I have DJ'd I'll always slip one in somewhere. Anyway, to my points: 1) Does anyone know of any other versions - but please bear in mind that my quest took 30 years and I may be a bit fragile! 2) Does anyone have a similar "version" obsession and what is the record. Thank you for your time - I need to go lie down now. John.
  22. You having a busy day too then Jon?
  23. Actually, at a slight tangent, on Clarence Murray's "Don't Talk Like That" on SSS International, the record starts with a 1,2 - 1,2,3,4 count in. There is a clearly audible cough between the 1 & the 2. That always appealed to me and makes it real - particularly since it stresses that most of the music we love was done "on the cheap" and in one take. John.
