  1. Thanks Ken, I wasn't advocating checking all records for stamped matrix numbers though. Most of the Ric-Tics were ZTSC stamped except for the very early ones and by the time of this issue all the releases were stamped, as mine is. Happy to be wrong though and I think the Canadian angle is interesting. Pete, if you are still there, do you have a view? As an aside, does anyone find Manships guide to bootlegs of any use in helping with these issues? John.
  2. Looks like a boot to me mate - sorry. Print, font and colour is all wrong. Mine is totally different. Is the ZTSC number stamped? That said, if you have a mind to, you should be able to pick up an original at reasonable price. John.
  3. Must admit to not knowing artist or album. From what you say, it sounds good enough to buy blind......but any soundfiles about? John.
  4. Totally agree mate. Found an old B&S article the other day where Frank Elson tries to bring sense to the whole situation. I'll try and scan it in a few days - if this thread is still going then....... So many classics but played a raft yesterday, stand out tunes for me (yesterday) where: Curtis - How Can I Tell Her Jackson Sisters - I Believe in Miracles Lenny Welch - You Picked A Fine Time Alfie Davidson - Love Is A Serious Business David Sea - Night After Night Oscar Perry - I Got What You Need My favourite of all time? At the moment: Glenn Jones - I Am Somebody That enough classics for you? John.
  5. "Cut The Cake" was follow up - but I suspect that's not what your looking for?
  6. A mathematical equation would certainly make it easier. I have just listened to it again and, in my opinion, it is soul. Even more so after reading Tony's posting as to the background to the song - how on earth does he know so much? That's the problem though isn't it? Soul means different things to different people and we all have different views. To me, soul is present when I can feel the emotion, relate to it and empathise with it, this usually leads to an overwhelming desire to own it! Didn't know that the billboard charts were un-segregated though, I thought they were which is why they had seperate RnB charts. Oh, and Tony, what label was that Eddie the Eagle sound on? John.

  8. ......and it was "There are lies, damned lies and statistics" We really should get out more! A N Other Pedant
  9. I'm sure I connected my head directly to the internet with no computer sometime in the 80's, made my hair bristle and my teeth started chewing. I seemed to have all this knowledge and a huge desire to share it with everyone. ......or maybe that was something else? John.
  10. I remember these boots as being black and red and not demos. The vinyl or styrene thing could just mean a different pressing plant. Of course they could be later or even new boots, there are plenty of these arising now, especially since Ebay has spread awareness of prices etc. Anyone else help? John.
  11. Agree - it (Bari Track) was bootlegged well before that.
  12. Better Use Your Head .......and I wish I bloody had!
  13. To my knowledge it was Bari Track which goes way back to Wigan and before. Most of us didn't know there was a vocal until much later and it was bootlegged first on Sousan's Soul Galore label. The original appeared on Sound Impressions label whereas Rose Batiste was on Revilot. Don't know which of these was actually released first though I'm afraid. It was the same with Luther Ingram where "Exus Trek" was played long before "....All The Same....". Instrumentals were a lot more to the fore back then. Of course, others may know more........ John.
  14. I would say Chess. Masses of releases and very few overtly commercial. You would have to mention also HMV and at least nod toward Columbia. John.
  15. Yep, very nice, just bought NW album, wonder how long before its a mega in demand hard to get rare sound . ......and just to complete my other post, I stopped calling it "Northen Soul" years ago. It's either soul or rare soul. Let's get back to the real and original title huh? John.
  16. Spot on Russ, well said. John.
  17. Dave, that seems a bit of a sensitive reply! When you say "why should we", who exactly is "we"? I have been into "Northern" soul for over 30 years, since Wigan and was into mainstream soul before that. I have an extensive collection that, as I said, includes non 60's soul and have attended all major and local (to me) venues since 1975 so I think I can be included in this precious little "scene". I am the "Northern Soul crowd" and I am quite happy to hear soulful house. I don't know what the reaction would be in the scenario you describe, if I were there I'd be delighted. The overall point is that the scene has to evolve to survive and there is plenty of good soulful house and garage out there. I remember being looked down on for buying new releases in the 70's, those records were Innersection, Benny Troy, Greg Perry and Alfie Davidson to name but a few. Meanwhile, some of my mates were dancing to Paula Parfitt, Muriel Day and Bobby Goldsboro. I am not trying to impose anything at all on you and you shouldn't be so touchy about it. I was merely expressing a view and, for me, that view is right. As someone else said in an earlier posting, to each his own. Don't take it so seriously Dave, it's music........enjoy. John.
  18. Just noticed we live fairly close.......pm'd you.
  19. If you assume Northern Soul to be purely 60's - nothing. If you appreciate soul, no matter what the pigeon hole then everything. My collection, like a lot of others, has a very strong 60's core but ranges right through 70's, 80's and 90's up to stuff from last month. In my opinion, far better to drop the "Northern" tag and open it up to all forms and evolutions (yes, evolutions) of soul music. Then perhaps we'd have a growing "scene". Just adding my view........... John.
  20. Crackin' track that one and one I never tire of. Be interesting to hear the reaction from some though.............. John.
  21. It will be another "tailor made" and thus attract all sorts of negative comment. Me, I am looking forward to the collaboration of Dean Parrish, Paul Weller and Acid Jazz. It may be dire but it will be interesting....... John.
  22. Or perhaps you mean that we should all get younger? If so - still yes!
  23. Ummmmm......oh, never mind.
  24. Fair comment Baz, your analogy of "standing next to dealer and shouting" makes a great deal of sense and is well put - thank you. Ted, I apologise for my comments. There does need to be some way to comment though - at an event these discussions go on all the time, albeit away from the dealers. This would have the benefit of advising those who are unsure about prices - be they buyers or sellers. Like you I frequently get asked about prices and I am usually voiciferous if I think they are unfair. Remember too, I wasn't the only person to comment on this particular thread. So, what I am saying is sorry but then again I am saying that comment should be freely given. If it is "policy" it should be re-thought. Talking myself in circles so I'm gonna light a cigarette and think about it, but for now - I'll butt out. John.
  25. This is a public forum. I shall comment on whatever I like - as have others. Discussion on record prices has always been central to "the scene" and always will be. I don't see why we should stop that just to suit you. If people want to buy at your prices fair enough, as I said, it is a free market. Others clearly do not. John.
