Um, so now I'm confused, cos I have this one:
Orange label, vinyl, no distributed by ATCO markings, writer credited as Wylie - Hester. Different from all described above! Bought it in second hand/junk shop in USA about 20 years ago.
Any ideas?
John.
Edit, text looks far clearer than on scan as I have enlarged it a tad.
I didn't know Nigel but this thread has moved me tremendously.
For someone to have so many friends and for those friends to be so loyal in support and, sadly, in condolences is a huge tribute to Nigel and the man I am sure he was. I am sorry that I did not have the opportunity to meet him.
Rest In Peace Nigel, the thoughts of the entire scene are with you.
John.
Why don't you just wait a few weeks and it may miraculously appear again on set sale list at inflated price but less than sold at auction. Just like the Dennis D'ell, Cobblestone, Flame n King and Marsha Gee things have recently.
Can't think how that might have happened........
Sorry mate, can't recommend anywhere but am missing some things in the Peacock label section of my collection. If I ain't got it, I'll buy it - deffo!
Good luck,
John.
You know what? I saw them too, in exactly the same place on my honeymoon a few years before that with the simply delicious Marolyn (we are still married ).
Naturally, there was the usual holiday high spirits but the two of us were in awe of the stunning performance we saw (nudge, nudge). Got some pictures somewhere.........
Thanks for reviving the memory mate!
John.
Sorry, didn't read the KR thread mate, can't be arsed with all that petty politics. It's not 1985 any more and we are adults now (allegedly ).
What you suggest looks like a good and imaginative set to me Drew and you have thoughtfully remembered that it is the soul that counts. I'd certainly listen and probably dance to most (Barbara Lewis......oooooohhh!!).
Granted you say you have few records but not sure what you mean when you say "If I were a DJ". Surely we are all DJs, we just happen to be missing the inflated egos and mis-judged sense of priorities. Ooops, there I go again, speaking my mind...........please don't berate me moderators!
John.
Not sure Miff, I am like you - in two minds about it. Not a bad sound though.
By the way, is it my speakers but it sounds very tinny when I play back on my PC?
Cheers,
John.
Item is sold so probably too late but for the sake of clarity thought I'd try and help.
I think this is original as I am not aware it was booted on this label, just the stardust one. Can't see the demand justifying the effort of a boot that sophisticated these days.
Mine is definately original as I bought it as a new release in '75. It has an extended "Disco Version" on side B (both sides are stereo), a stick on label and the "anti slip" grid around the label. Markings in run out groove are DEP1572A adjacent to the De-Lite logo and JR adjacent to the left hand side of the pink stripe. Both markings are neatly etched.
See attached scan - note it is not blue.
Hope this helps mischief, think I'll go and play it now!
John.
Sorry to "bump" this again, but I just wondered if anyone had any further info?
I too remember it from Morecambe and Stafford around 85 so the Lasso issue can't possibly be original can it?
Thanks, John.
Found this some while back and yes, a sight to behold!
Fascinating character, I thought it was a woman on first hearing of "Coming Down"! Apparently a transvestite (not gay) who definately lived life to the full. Lived in Canada and appears to have just "dissappeared".
"Coming Down" is brilliant as is "In My Tenement". Also look out for "Any Other Way" on Cookin' label.
Quirky, but brilliant stuff!
John.
You're right - I definately remember the instrumental as the one played and have it on tape from both Wigan and Yate. Never remember hearing vocal played at all.
Quite controversial at the time!
John.
Rare record and nice find.
It's a reasonable version in my opinion, backing is good but I prefer Ila Vann I'm afraid, vocals are much stronger.
Play it and enjoy it mate.
John.
Not to my knowledge Matt, no. It hit the charts almost as soon as it was released. The beat was not really right for the time either (imho of course).
That said, it's a brilliant track from a brilliant album which I bought at the time and yes, it would be great to hear it played.
John.
Morning, I found the B&S article and thought it may be of interest so here it is. It's from B&S of May 1978. If you can't make it out you may have to download and zoom in a bit - sorry. Funny how some things never change isn't it?
Always liked Frank, spoke a lot of sense and was actually a "punter" too. Hope he is still out there somewhere?
John.
Nice one Miff, Fontella Bass has a tremendous voice. If you don't already have it, watch out for "Safe and Sound", also on Chess and should be cheap. Her best imho.
Funky Nassau on Alston was one of the first import new release records I ever bought, very exciting at the time. Don't have it any more but lots of memories so not too "dark side" for me mate!
John.
Thanks Ken, I wasn't advocating checking all records for stamped matrix numbers though. Most of the Ric-Tics were ZTSC stamped except for the very early ones and by the time of this issue all the releases were stamped, as mine is.
Happy to be wrong though and I think the Canadian angle is interesting. Pete, if you are still there, do you have a view?
As an aside, does anyone find Manships guide to bootlegs of any use in helping with these issues?
John.
Looks like a boot to me mate - sorry. Print, font and colour is all wrong. Mine is totally different. Is the ZTSC number stamped?
That said, if you have a mind to, you should be able to pick up an original at reasonable price.
John.
