  1. In my opinion (and my record boxes): Peacock Veep Chess J.
  2. Got me there mate! But more fun methinks that debating whether or not Thatcher ever made a modern instrumental that was soulful and who played it first under what cover up title!!! J.
  3. How about this one - fits the bill wouldn't you say? https://www.remembertheaba.com/OnlyintheABA...ngFashion1.html J.
  4. However, Simsy, not all are relevant.............. https://www.element6.com/clients/britgear/info.htm Modfathers here, modfathers there, modfathers every f**kin where!
  5. Millie Jackson - Caught Up (followed closely by Still Caught Up) Miracles - City of Angels Ohio Players - Fire Poppies - Lullaby of Love (yes really, but probably for sentimental reasons!) Dryzabone - Conspiracy And as already mentioned, Bobby Womack - The Poet (and Poet 2), Otis Redding - Otis Blue. Tough one and ever changing! J.
  6. Sorry, dodgy editing! Post moved.........below. J.
  7. Fully agree mate - which brings us to the next level of the debate, namely: can an instumental be soulful? In my opinion - yes, but not often! John.
  8. Well said Brian. The Jam were totally irrelevant and had absolutely nothing to do with any flavour of soul music whatsoever. Nice, safe, middle class pop stars - the Mum's favourite! J.
  9. ....and the debate began long before that! Here's Frank Elson from around 77/78. (apologies to anyone that has seen it before but it makes a good point). Interesting that although being at heart a 60's man, I have 18 of the top 30 tracks that Simon mentions in your post!! It's all soul.......... J.
  10. I agree, things were definately on the up in the 80's. In fact I'd go further and say the scene was far BETTER in the 80's - more imaginative djs playing more soul and less pop, more regular nights better attended and by a better dressed crowd! J
  11. Wot, no Carstairs Pete? Brilliant selection, loved 'em all. J.
  12. Well said Paul, definately a soul masterpiece. I envy you if you have just heard it for the first time. I remember when I did............ The 12" may be best avoided though. Cheers, J.
  13. Tricky, agree with most people's shouts, but a mention to: Glenn Jones David Sea Little Anthony JJ Barnes
  14. Scotty Williams. Always loved "Fear" soooo soulful, sounds like the guy just walked in outa the rain and blasted the song out. Only managed to get hold of this and "In The Same Old Way" and often wondered if he did much more, or in fact, what sort of guy was he - what happened to him etc etc. Also, Bud Harper - not found out much about him (but I'm hoping Tony R has!). Good thread Karen.......... J.
  15. That's the one, Thelma Houston. Brilliant. If it is Col, let me know and I'll pm you MP3 (are we still not supposed to put 'em on here?) J.
  16. Thelma Houston on Motown? J.
  17. Yeah, funny that. He auctioned it for £355 then a few weeks later it appears on the list for £300 - Why would you do that? It's been there ever since.......hmmmm. Same thing happened with Dennis D'ell & Flame N King too (auctioned at very high prices then re-appeared far cheaper on list but still at higher than usual prices), could dealers be, well, surely not........ Anyway, I had two copies from way back and put one on ebay around March time. I got £175 for it - which is about right methinks. Hope that helps, J.
  18. Don't worry about it Pete - just make it number 999,999 in your list of 100,000 things to worry about! John.
  19. Thanks for that Bob. A sad loss and a shame all that talent couldn't have been developed a bit more. J.
  20. email'd ya! J.
  21. Fully agree Pete, record prices have dropped considerably in the last year. Which is great news for buyers but bad news for those dealers with high overheads. Thus - they produce sales aids and call them "Price Guides". We all know what they are (and how wrong they are) - even if nobody seems to want to say it out loud!! That people pay for them is amazing to me........... I tend to use my own version on a spreadsheet. I update it with the last price I saw it listed for, or saw it sold on Ebay at. Thus I get an average price. I tend to ignore the glitches (Dells - Your Song for £146 one week, next week no bidders at £35, Flame N King £311 in March, £88 last week and £81 this week) and of course I only do it for stuff I think I might want or already own. There are also quite a few places on the internet for research. You are right though - to be confronted by someone with no real knowledge clutching a "price guide" that you know is hopelessly wrong is almost as frustrating as a 4-0 victory a month after the World Cup ended. Cheers, J.
  22. Actually Pete, me and 2,000 others were trying to take your picture - but this crazy singer and her band got in the way!! I have some Jr Walker at Wigan pics somewhere - where you there that night too? J.
  23. 'Tis true, she sang it acapella and yes, she was there twice. Posted these pictures before but thread seems to have been deleted, so here they are again (second night - taken by me). John.
  24. Don't think it was that early Ian. It was right at the very start of the night and didn't last long - could you have been late? I just remember the lights being on and hadn't realised there was video until today! I'm not looking at the camera and hadn't got changed yet, in fact I'm not looking at anything just drilling holes in the wall with my x-ray vision.... John.
