  1. First one I was ever aware of was Chic -"Dance, Dance, Dance" - but I'm probably miles out mate. Still, it's a start........ J.
  2. There's a queue here Bearsy............bloody medway boyz!
  3. Dunno mate, quite like it but then............ Don't mind the voice but sounds like she ain't really trying - or perhaps that she is trying to sound laid back. Drums irritate a bit but I can see why horn riff is right up your street though. Hmmm, if I owned it, I'd play it now and again and end up liking it - know what I mean? J.
  4. Fully agree mate, by far the best version. Dunno about 500 though, I'll wait for next one....... J.
  5. Nice one Pete - Thanks! John
  6. Sad news and a sad loss. Rest In Peace.
  7. Very good show - looking forward to rest of series. J.
  8. Me too - avoid like the plague. Best dancers never entered anyway............
  9. I remember a mate whose favourite record was The Millionaires "You've Gotta Love Your Baby" when looking through record boxes he would always confuse this with Barbara McNair "You're Gonna Love My Baby". He spent a whole summer buying boots and re-issues of one or the other and in the end he would come up to me at nighters and ask "what is my favourite record?" and then "have i got it or did I buy the other one?" Of course I was just as blocked as him so it really just made matters worse.......... It stopped after a while but he may have had the last laugh as around that time stacks of Barabara McNairs appeared and none of us bought them thinking they were boots; they weren't. Lionel, you out there mate? John,
  10. Please name him so we can all avoid being conned.
  11. Well said Bogue All else is now put aside. Get well soon Kev. J.
  12. I was there too mate and it was a weird one. Concrete dancefloor and booming bass from upstairs. A few of them dropped in though and were quite interested. Wonder if any of them converted? Seen a few scraps outside 'nighters, a couple at Wigan I remember getting off the train after a Wigan Vs Warrington rugby match - mayhem. The worst I remember was outside the 100 Club when bouncers piled in to some guy for no apparent reason. One of them drew a flick knife but thought better of it and put it away. Heaven knows what that was about. Thankfully it's rare and I've never known it to happen inside. J.
  13. Saw the programme and thought it quite good. Registered the Frank Poop but didn't take too much notice, what with me being a soul music fan and all. John.
  14. Crackin tune that Mischief, well done. Remember that being Rev Tony Clayton's big tune for a while at Leicester, I pestered him for months (even wrote to him!) to sell it but he just wouldn't part with it. Bought it a few years later and it still has pride of place. My best buy this week is Edward Hamilton - My Darlin Baby on Mary Jane. Happy New Year, John.
  15. PM'd ya. John.
  16. Just spotted this and it is truly sad news. Knew Pickle well "back in the day" and he will be sadly missed. Without people like him, there would have been no "scene". RIP mate. John.
  17. Plenty of soul down here mate - hey, think I just got my own musical genre!! Back on topic. Northern Soul is a journalistic and marketing term used to describe the style of music played predominently in northern clubs in the 70's and 80's. SOUL on the other hand is a musical style (or "genre" for the pretentious) ......and I love it. See, I don't always ignore you! John
  18. Fully agree and a monster track at the time - must dig it out. How about endings of "Bernadette" - Four Tops "The Breaking Point" - Deena Johnson "Count The Days" - Stanley Williams .......... "just watch my footsteps in the snow" John.
  19. Cracked record would be worth virtually zero, unless you want to hang 'em on the wall I suppose. In which case, a quid maybe.
  20. Fully agree Karen. If $27.50 is going to charity that leaves $22.50 - still more than double the price of a CD so they are making an extremely healthy profit. What happened was a tragedy - but shouldn't the government of the self proclaimed "greatest nation on earth" be dealing with it? In fact, why haven't they? Oh, and on the off chance that this is still a soul music forum, I'm afraid I didn't really like the tracks on the site - but I respect the right of others to like them! J.
  21. I don't recognise the term "northern soul", never have. It's all soul to me and that's what I like. All tempos, all decades, all styles and all formats.
  22. Think that was my post?........very glad you are pleased Paul!
  23. Hmmm......... I would say it had the opposite effect on me as I was just getting into soul and wondering what "Northern Soul" was when it broke. I decided this wasn't for me! A short while later, I started going to Wigan but had a hard time convincing non-soulie mates that this wasn't a "northern" record and that we didn't spent all night "doing the footsie" as they put it. The record undoubtedly attracted people to the scene, but not me. In fact I went in spite of it. It also put a lot of people off going and made a bit of a joke of the whole thing (as did Wayne Gibson, Nosmo King et al). The scene at that time didn't really need a boost, I would have thought that a far more beneficial phase was the mod revival of a few years later which definately revitalised a flagging scene imho. As to the general point, yes, we need media involvement to boost interest. Unfortunately these days, the media coverage is more of a "piss taking" variety..........and whose fault is that? Good topic Winnie, got me thinking. John.
  24. Hi Rachel, for me it's "Nothing No Sweeter Than Love" on Golden World, recorded when he was 12! Classic northern and an early play from my Yate days. I also have a demo album from 1985 - "Private Propery" on Casablanca which ain't too bad. It also includes a brief biog and photo which are attached below. May not be what you are looking for but it's a start. John.
  25. As long as I can hear 'em, I'll keep 'em. Although even if I can't hear them, they still look good! So, they are with me for life. Not sure what after that - with record prices dropping so much now, they probably won't have any value so I'll have to find a music lover or they'll be in the skip I suppose. Whatever.................... J.
