The Music Box with Mark Randle on Starpoint Radio
Mark R replied to Mark R's topic in All About the SOUL
We re-open The Music Box this coming Sunday 22 July between 12 & 2pm GMT on www.starpointradio.com............remember........you never know what's coming out of The Music Box! ;-)) Cheers, Mark R -
Glyn Reardon and the ex Mrs Freeman in there at about 4:57........old travelling companion Andy (Andyontherock) Newman and ex Mrs Tracey on there too. Great footage that, though I never personally went to Tony's. I've got all this stuff on VHS somewhere but never really marked up the tapes for most of it..............not sure it will ever see the light of day, which is a shame! :-(( Cheers, Mark R

Just reading this thread with interest, and was particularly engaged by the Chinese comments. I'll explain why I say this, albeit not from a rare soul perspective. It's probably still valid as an indicator of what has been said here. I stopped doing my Starpoint Radio shows back in February, so the last show I posted as a podcast was January. I have been interested to see that despite posting no new content since then, I am still getting good interest, to the point where I'm still hovvering in the top 30 in my category. I delved into the stats of this, and found that leading the way on the downloads is......you guessed it.....China. I have had x10 more downloads in China than the country in second place, which interestingly is Taiwan!! So, as pointed out here....interesting times. There are a lot of people in China!! LOL Cheers, Mark R

f*ck me........I just give up, on so many levels in this thread.............more holes in it than Swiss cheese!! And the best one is, it's a shit record now! Cheers, Mark R

I would rather like to think that Expansion simply underestimated the demand (unlike some of us......he says, wishing he'd have followed his nose on this one and pursued issuing it himself when no-one seemed interested, being CONVINCED of it's saleability!) and in business terms just realised that they were missing an opportunity by not pressing more. And it's certainly not their fault that folks go mental and pay £50 a time for copies! Cheers, Mark R

Album Only D.j.'s - Are There Any Out There ?
Mark R replied to The Tempest's topic in Look At Your Box
Bring the level of those LP tracks up to scratch by recording them to MP3 and playing it from a CD-R, that should be sufficiently politically incorrect!! LOL -
William Bell live at the 6TS Cleethorpes Weekender 15th-17th June 2012
Mark R commented on Ady Croasdell's article in Event News
Now then Jock, there's a thought, 20th Anniversary, bit spesh and all that.............William Bell in the main room on Staurday night, and Wilbe label mate Jeff Floyd in the other room Friday night..............now THAT'S special. How's your budget Ady........and/or your rapore with William LOL? Cheers, Mark R -
And fair play to you mate! In this instance it's a good thing because it makes them available WITHOUT having to go out of your way to get one from a shop on the day if there's not one halway convenient for you. Of course, I realise that some could say that this defeats the whole idea of RSD!! Nothing's ever black and white though is it..............except balck and white perhaps!! Hope you're well BTW Professor Plumb? Cheers, Mark R

Interesting to see some of these comments, which I've only just caught up with, but have had similar thoughts myself. Yep, buy 2, sell one for an inflated price while some poor bugger missed out on RSD, and probably AFTER paying a bus or train fare/petrol to get there to support the shop/day. Money, a disease ain't it? Shame when peoples hobbies become a money making excercise...........isn't it nice to get away from the money making aspect of the everyday rat-race when it's something you enjoy. Of course, it's not just confined to RSD and new releases.........you could be looking for a 7" on eBay which you would love to own and cherish, and some part-time wheeler and dealer snags it and it's then on a list for a higher price! I'm not that naive that I think this would ever be any different, and I wouldn't say that I've NEVER done something like it myself, because I have. Not very often though, as I don't go out of my way to do so for the reasons outlined above. As a collector, I know how it feels! Cheers, Mark R

Gregory Porter - 1960 What? (Opolopo Kick & Bass Rerub) - Expansion 12" Pressed for record store day, this will however also be available via the Simply Soul stall/mail order, but as it will be limited and most will go to shops, it might be wise not to rely on getting one too much further down the line!! Cheers, Mark R

We've just got too many DJ's to get them all on the flyer, but the full line-up reads as follows................ DJ Bigger, Terry Jones & Andy Davies in the main room.................. Cliff Steele, Gavin Page, Andy Riley, Kev Rodgers & Chris Dalton in the 70's/crossover room....................... and not forgetting our legendary early session in the afternoon, this time featuring Trev Cox, Paul Garland, Will Ward, Graham Dowler & Neil Hanratty. Of course Sam, Andrew B, Mark G & Mark R will be your residents on rotation in support of all this. It's almost toooo much to handle, and all for just £8! *****IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT***** Pete Simpson will now unfortunately NOT be appearing at the event. Apololgies from Sam Evans, Mark Goddard and Mark Randle, but this is totally out of our control. See below an apology from the man himself........ Hi Everyone, Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I will not be available to appear at the forthcoming Soul Purpose Summer Party on June 9th. Needless to say I am extremely disappointed to announce that I won't be able to be there and hope you accept my sincerest apologies. However I do intend to secure a date later in the year, so maybe I will see you then? Please accept my apologies once again and have a drink in my absence. Regards Pete Simpson

The Music Box with Mark Randle on Starpoint Radio
Mark R replied to Mark R's topic in All About the SOUL
Hi everyone, After lots of consideration, I've finally decided to take a break from radio. It's not a decision I've taken lightly but it is one that has been looming for a little while now. Accumulation of various factors have lead to this, which I won't bore you with, but I would just like to thank everyone for listening over the last 5 years or so to my monthly instalments on Starpoint, and thank Carl for the opportunity and the support throughout that period. Also thanks to followers of the podcasts. I haven't decided what to do about the podcast site yet, my inclination is to keep it going and maybe put some older shows up from before the days of the podcast. Also I may pop up here and there with the odd one off show for Starpoint, though I haven't discussed this with the station yet. Thanks of course to the artists who provide us with all this wonderful music: without them there would be no us and we should always remember that. Specific thanks to those that have sent music for consideration for the show. I would encourage that to continue as I'll still be doing the record reviews and various gigs, so if an artist you feel it's worthwhile then carry on feeding me!! So, with a touch of sadness I say farewell to the radio, but would like to think it really is only farewell and not goodbye forever. Who knows, one day I might come back bigger and better with a more regular show, when life affords me the time to do so in a dedicated manner. I have to sign off by saying that, whatever its popularity and following, I have always been immensely proud of the ethos of The Music Box in playing new music across the whole spectrum of soul, soulful dance, deep house, southern soul etc, etc. Not everyone's cup of tea trying to cover all that in the same two hours I know, but it reflects ME and my wide taste, and this has always been important to me as it's specialist internet radio, not national radio where I'm trying to taylor the music to max out the listenership. Unlike when I first started the show, there are now numerous shows on numerous stations to cater for our needs, so you won't miss me too much. There still aren't that many though, which cover such a musical spectrum as The Music Box did. Ciao, Mark R -

If you didn't expect too much, then it was fine. I think on these forums we always feel sold short by such documentaries, but we're in a minority as we know a bit about it. For me, these things are about the rare footage......if you want to get the right story you need to read the books.....Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, Love Saves The Day etc, etc Would have liked more reference to the DJ's/remixers etc, but nice to see Mancuso and Siano included at least......maybe simply because they are still alive to interview?? Cheers, Mark R -
For those whose appetite and interest for our old friend Vince "Audio" Broomfield was rekindled by the release of his "New Beginnings" LP collection of cuts from the vault last year should DEFINITELY check out the forthcoming NEW RECORDING "Won't Somebody" due for release on Soul Junction, date TBC. A mid-tempo modern soul dance delight with the trademark Audio sax break........this is quality!! Well done Soul Junction! Cheers, Mark R

The Music Box with Mark Randle on Starpoint Radio

Guys, Just a quick heads-up that there will be no new "Music Box" tonight as I have some family business to attend to. Starpoint are going to re-run an old show.......possibly the Vick Lavender (Chicago) interview from last summer. If you didn't ever catch that, then it really is interesting to hear what Vick had to say.........and Colin Curtis & Dr Bob Jones "on the wire" too. Cheers, Mark R -

Oh dear, I was only listening to "Quicksand" last night, on the back of the Stafford group on Facebook. Really sad to hear this, but to be positive, some of these guys left an impression that they are not really aware of, and probably dreamed about all those years ago. Clearly Kell was made aware, which is really nice I think. R.I.P. Kell Osbourne Mark R
