Elbowed -Out ....2 X Unissued Upbeat 70S Tracks For Summer 2013
Mark R replied to Tfk's topic in All About the SOUL
Not got mine yet, though have one reserved. From the sound clips it sounds like probably the strongest on the label yet. Cheers, Mark R -

Good morning squire..........you've just brought to mind another vivid memory...........how Edwin split the hall down the middle and did the "war, what is it good for....absolutely nothing...." using the two sets of the crowd. A showman for sure. As you may know, when he settled in the UK he bought a property not far from me. Saw him walking down the street in Atherstone one day............a most unlikely sight back then.......if you knew Atherstone you would understand why!! When we bought our first house, he used the same solicitors, and when we went in for a meeting with the lady doing our conveyancing one day, he'd been in and left her a signed LP!! You couldn't make it up............ Cheers, Mark R

At risk of boring everyone Steve, it was my first ever all nighter experience, so it's special to me. Don't remember that much in some ways, but vividly remember: - the sound reflecting off the walls as I walked in. ....It was crap acoustically, but somehow that added to this 16 yr olds experience LOL - the guy dancing in the top hat. .....who was he, as apparently he was renowned for it!! - Johnny Caswell being my most memorable tune of the night - me mum (RIP) telling me to "behave", as she was wise to it all as my elder brothers mate was a Wigan regular and had been in some scrapes Never forgotten! ! Cheers, Mark R

Thanks Dave, yes I've enjoyed the banter mate!! Cheers, Mark R -
Chalky, to clarify, I couldn't agree more............just seems a shame that that's what it took..........but yes, at least it's got him a revived profile! Cheers, Mark R

Label is Meldac. Got a CD but not the vinyl. "Give This Love A Try" is the track..........basically a well extended re-work of "Trust Your Heart." Look for the Wilton Felder CD "Forever Always" for the Bobby vocalled "Forever." Just mentioning as it's one of those oddities that many may have missed. Cheers, Mark R

Damon Albarn I'm afraid.......... Cheers, Mark R

They are great vocalists Steve, that Kimberly Davis has got some pipes, and I think the other one is Sylver Logan Sharp.......I'm hoping he will announce any time now! ! Cheers Mark R

Hi mate, year is a bit sketchy pal.............contents.............Little John, Little Nicky Soul, Ghetto Boys........I'll give it a listen and come back with more.....haven't listened to it for a long time. I have another which is just Keb...........Big Frank, Lenis Guess, Soul Set, Ron Baxter, Richard Anthony, Gordon Keith, Rose St. John............wicked.......and it's always amused me that the case has some stick on big cartoon eyes on it and the words "You Are Here"...............can't think why! LOL Cheers, Mark R -

Am I right in thinking that Guy's Goodies was a feature in Blackbeat then Steve? I'm interested because I have a cassette at home with "6T's Kebb" one side and "Guy's Goodies" the other. I thought Guy's Goodies may be a one off for the tape so it's interesting to know it was related to some regular thing in Blackbeat. As an aside, the tape, and particularly Guy's side, is recorded real lo-fi...........a deliberate ploy maybe??? Cheers, Mark R -

A New Version Of Lou Pride Im Coming Home In The Morning ?
Mark R replied to perux's topic in Look At Your Box
See, I love soulful house but wouldn't touch this with a bargepole. ......I remember knocking it back on Traxsource months ago! I find it really interesting that some folk on here criticise house and its merits as contemporary black soulful music but when they choose to like some it's more often stuff I think is substandard!! I'm interested in what Jordi said, because what strikes me is that as a producer of such things you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't....so to speak. What I mean is, I totally see Jordi's point of why do it if it's such a direct copy, but I also see that as the producer you also know you're leaving yourself wide open for a flogging if you try to change it. As copies go, it sounds pretty good to me. Lifford Shillingford is a good vocalist, and Matt Early puts some good house mixes together. I would be interested to know who the band is Lee? Cheers, Mark R -
I shared it on some old Wigan attendess Facebook pages local to me, and I know in turn other local folk have spotted it! Cheers, Mark R

I've decided to knock my Modern Musings column in Soul Up North on the head after 11 years in the "modern soul" seat. I figure 11 years is long enough for both readers and scribe alike! LOL Anyway, I was reflecting, and thought that those of you with a broad taste or specifically into moder soul might be interested to see my very first submission from summer 2002. Quite scarry really because in terms of the record reviews it certainly doesn't seem like 11 years ago.......blimey! Things like the use of the word "garage" are amusing in hindsight.......I haven't used that term for years and looking back it was a poor term but was widely used back then to describe a genre of music being played on the modern scene. Anyway, have a read, see what you think/identify with!! Thanks for any support/interest along the way.......I have really enjoyed doing these! click to view click to view Cheers, Mark R

Sad to read this Ady, I can see her smile now as she sat opposite me at breakfast on the Monday morning after her appearance at Prestatyn some years ago. R.I.P. Mary Love (Comer) Mark R

The True Image is the version I have.......also on one of those early Goldmine/Soul Supply modern soul LP's.......along with Benny Rose "It's Only You".......now there's a tune!! Cheers, Mark R

Cleethorpes Twenty Year Veterans...how Many Are There ?
Mark R replied to Dave Rimmer's topic in All About the SOUL
I reckon my first one was 1998 and if someone can list the acts from the 90's I can probably confirm that. Chalet's it was back then, and I was in with the Hull crowd.......not for the feint of heart I can tell you! The only time I ever went on the train too. I've only missed one since, in 2002 when my daughter was born (11 years ago this very day as it happens - Happy Birthday Hope!). I know which act I missed as my mate Mr. Stead got the Velvelettes autographs for me. He was the first soulie I called that day to let everyone I knew at Cleethorpes know that I was a dad! Not sure which one I started DJ'ing at, and I have had to miss some days since, when my daughters birthday has clashed, but I've always made it! If Ady keeps the date as first weekend in June I will never have that problem again. I ALWAYS enjoy Cleethorpes but the weekends go faster with every passing year!! Well done Ady.......you do have a great attitude to it all, which counts a lot for me. Cheers, Mark R
