  1. I find a bit of both - there are a few particular DJs I always hear new things from when they play, but also so much rare excellent material from the online shows - all of the people mentioned above are must listens. Also as Marc pointed out comps are always worth checking out as there are often very obscure and largely unknown tunes on them - Point Of View being a great example. Think we are in a great period of new or largely unknown material turning up of all genres - from that excellent old skool r&s James Lynn Marsh right through to left field jazzy funky stuff. That's without all the unissued pieces that are found. Venues might be suffering a touch but musically it's all good!
  2. Agreed - great record!
  3. Cheers for the info.
  4. Indigos is great Steve - is that Caesars on the Doc Peabody label??
  5. Top work Tony! Was the culprit ever caught? Bet it was Ady. He's alway loitering with intent.
  6. That was the Beat!!! wasn't it?
  7. Great 45!!! As sampled by Pete Rock
  8. John - didn't this have two label variations - one on yellow power pac and another design? Rare (and brill) record by all accounts.
  9. Got put onto this cracking old skool 60's dancer by Gloucester's finest recently - old Rob Marriott c/u apparently. Would be good to see it take off again - although think someone told me it's had plays in Burnley or somewhere similar recently?
  10. Think Marco has been playing this - or got it recently. Nice 45 Greg!
  11. Love this but had to move mine on partly due to the pressing issue - shame as the 45 is amazing. What price if an alt studio take recorded properly showed up??
  12. I thought this had been uncovered before then as Jason Perlmutter had included it on a podcast? Or was that the flip?
  13. Good post above. Following on from this went to a Lee Fields gig the other week in London. He opened with a cover of 'Two Timer' and had everyone in there singing along word for word, as he did for the rest of his set of contemporary recordings. What I saw was a room of lots of young music lovers who had travelled to hear real soul music from a real soul artist. The excitement and passion was palpable. These people aren't from the northern soul scene but they are people who like and appreciate soul music. As Bob points out there is a larger soul appreciative audience out there outside of our close knit community. As a modest collector I can perfectly appreciate people's frustrations when they've paid good money for an original 45 to then hear it somewhere where they feel it isn't being appreciated 'correctly' or indeed played by someone they feel doesn't have the same passion for the music. Things are changing however and from all of this I think new fans will appear - not necessarily on the soul scene as we know it - but in some way and appreciating the music in their own way. I think this box set is good for all of that but does make life harder for the hardcore collector. I'm trying hard to think of other ways I could spout some more fence sitting sentences but hopefully you know what I mean :)
  14. Cheesy, basic, but can't help but like it for some reason. But then I'd cut a rug to BJ Thomas 'Don't Have A Mind'. Do like this sort of poppy soul stuff when the time is right. Glad it's been played and is part of the scene to be honest - don't think we're worse off for it at all.
  15. The Paul Burton has a nice instro flip I think?
  16. :)
  17. YGTBW = dancefloor clearer but i like it as a record.
  18. The Stopper is such a f*cking great record. Oozes quality, style, vocal brilliance and is just so deeply cool.
  19. Gave a spin the other week at the 100. 5am record. Great!! The backing has a nice punch to it.
  20. Bit more uptempo but always liked Mathew Brown on Sew City
  21. Disco Hustle is great!!
  22. Thanks for the info and links guys - not sure what happened with the text size! Best, J
  23. I'm trying to find out for a friend about some info on this track. Apparently when it was being played in the clubs originally it was often speeded up? Does anyone know who the first DJs were to play it and how much it was speeded up by (although appreciate this could vary!). Also - would the DJ with the original acetate of it have played it at it's normal speed? Cheers!
