  5. WILTON ALLNIGHTER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7th - THE LAST THIS YEAR. The Wilton Ballroom which has provided a home for our allnighter, featuring soul music from all eras and genre for over 14 years non-stop, is to close for the remainder of the year. Under new ownership, the venue is to receive much needed refurbishment and alteration, which is planned to start in October. This means our next allnighter on the 7th September will be the last this year, and our November 2nd allnighter unfortunately cancelled. After a meeting with the new management team who are keen to retain the event, we are pleased to announce that the reopening of the ‘New Wilton Ballroom’ in early April 2008 will see the continuation of our much loved allnighters hopefully for many more years to come. Also during our meeting with the new management some exciting new possibilities were discussed for expanding and enhancing our allnighter. Though a complete refurbishment of the existing building is planned don't worry, the raised dance area and sprung floor will be retained. However there will be all new furnishings, P.A. system, and extensions to the front and rear of the building, providing additional function rooms and a balcony. When completed, the new venue will provide us with more possibilities and facilities than ever before, so watch this space. We hope this doesn't cause too much inconvenience to our regulars, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support over the years, soul fans, DJs, S.U.N. fanzine, and the many record dealers who have not only supported our events, but run our ads in their mailings. The September date will not only be the last in 2007 but the last now for a little over 6 months, so let's make it a very special night and give the old place a good send off. This is the last time you will see the Wilton Ballroom in its present form. We will kick off the "New Wilton" by celebrating our 15th anniversary with our much loved collectors' night, featuring DJs and collectors playing deck for deck, which we plan for early April 2008. We'll keep you posted via the Wilton website (also to be refurbished) and the Soul Source forum as things progress, If you want the personal touch, send your email address to boxy1@btopenworld.com and we'll keep you updated.
  6. The Last Soul Night At The Frobisher Suite - Wakefield Saturday 31st March - Chicago Soul Survey The Mill House Group, which owns The Frobisher Suite, part of the Ferry Boat complex at Stanley Ferry, Wakefield, has finalised a decision to convert the building to a Wacky Warehouse for kids. This means the end of the very successful Soul Nights, which have had their home there for almost twelve years. This decision to close came out of the blue to the promoters - Dave&Val Box, and Fred&Jacque Ward. After discussions with the local staff at the Frobisher, many of whom were still in shock themselves, not knowing their futures, it was decided to make the next scheduled Soul Night, Saturday 31st March - The Chicago Soul Survey - the very last Soul Night to be held at the venue. The promotion team is very saddened by this decision, and can only apologise for any inconvenience caused to the many loyal soul fans who have attended the venue over the years. The venue has been something special. It has earned its reputation as one of the longest running, forward thinking venues in Yorkshire. Started in 1995, over the years it has helped to move the scene on by its music policy and willingness to try something new. We have booked most of the top DJ's from all over the country, and introduced lesser known jocks/collectors, who have made their reputations at the venue. We have had some great nights with live acts and many special celebration nights. The music policy changed over the years as it must, but has always been superb - something for everybody with an eagerness to introduce something new, a policy now widely used by many new venues trying to gain a slice of the action and stay in business. We take this as a compliment to our efforts over the years. We are still suffering from the shock of this decision at the moment, but must now put our efforts into making sure the very last event is really something to remember. So, let's go out on a high note. If you've been a regular, don't miss the last one, and if you haven't been before, this is your very last chance. For those of you who haven't already seen details of this very special last event, read on: The Final Curtain: Saturday, 31st March 2007 March again and 12 months since Dave celebrated his 60th birthday with special live appearances of Jackie Ross&Syl Johnson - well, no live artists this time but 6 hours of soul music associated with the Windy City, yes a full Chicago Soul Survey. Such a night will include some very rare disks, but will also feature classic sounds very well known to all soul music fans. In the golden years, Chicago had more independent record labels operating than in Detroit and you will be surprised how many classic sounds have their roots in Chicago. DJ's tonight feature three stalwart Chicago collectors, firstly Mark Bicknell&Shane Cox. Both these guys are not only respected DJ's but have over the years been responsible for documenting Chicago related articles in many soul publications. Dave Box has always had his main interest in all things Chicago after his first visit stateside in 1970 and has more recently been one of the main forces behind the Chicago Soul Series CD's released by Grapevine Music - copies will be available on the night. Co-promoter Fred Ward will also be spinning some well-known Chicago classics from his box. Let's have a great night; get yourself down to the Frobisher and you never know, you might just hear or learn something new about the wonderful soul sounds of CHICAGO. We intend to document the history of the soul nights over the years, detailing DJs play lists, reviews, photos, live acts, punters' celebrations, after the last event, and hope you will add your memories/comments. If you would like to pass on your memories/comments on the Events Forum here is the link: www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=44411 Thanks to everyone for your support over the years, especially the Frobisher staff; the DJs; SUN fanzine; and the many record dealers who have run our ads in their mailings. 12. For those of you that still haven't got tickets but still intend to come, or have just found out about it!! Yes people are ringing up and telling us that they have, amazingly, only just found out about it. The remaining few tickets will be available on a pay on the door basis at £20.00, but we strongly recommend that you contact us using any of the methods listed below, making ticket reservations in your name. CHICAGO SOUL LEGENDS VISIT YORKSHIRE Jackie Ross and Syl Johnson, backed by Snake Davis&The Suspicions, will be appearing at the Frobisher, Stanley Ferry, Wakefield on 25th March 2006. This well-respected soul night has just celebrated its 10 years anniversary, with a very successful allnighter, and now stages a Chicago Soul Special. Direct from Chicago, exclusively for one night only, two Chicago soul legends will be performing some of their wonderful songs. The event will also be a tribute to the late singer/songwriter Johnny Moore, who sadly died in May 2005. Johnny wrote a number of songs for Syl Johnson, and was a long time friend of Jackie Ross. All three artists are good friends of Frobisher promoter Dave Box, who celebrates his 60th birthday on the same night. Apart from producing that authentic 60s backing sound, which they are very well known for, Snake Davis&The Suspicions will also perform their own set during the night. Jackie Ross and Syl Johnson have much more in common than residing in Chicago. In the early 60s Jackie was singing gospel in the Chicago area, but wanted to establish herself in the R&B market. Her break came at a talent contest at the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago. Syl Johnson's band was playing there, Jackie won the contest, and the award was a weekend of singing and being paid. That started her singing in Syl Johnson's band. 2006 - some 43 years later - and they are back on stage together again. Jackie will perform songs from many of the Chicago labels she was associated with, including Chess, Brunswick, Fountain, Golden Ear, GSF. Jackie only once visited the UK, in 1964, with Johnny Nash, on a Chess promotional tour, to promote her hit "Selfish One". Jackie has not performed any of her other material in the UK before. For the first time, this very underrated artist gets her chance to perform in front of a very appreciative soul crowd. Expect to hear: "Selfish One", "Trust In Me", "Take Me For A Little While", "Keep Your Chin Up" and many more. Her new Grapevine CD "Take The Weight Off Me" will be available on the night. !!Get a signed copy!! Syl Johnson - singer/songwriter/producer; a true legend in soul music. From quote by writer Bill Pollak: "Soul music is a language. The satisfaction that we derive from a great soul performance comes from our sense that the singer is expressing could not have been expressed as well in any other language. That's why a great soul performance means so much more than just a combination of music and lyrics". By this standard, Syl Johnson is a master of the soul genre. Syl Johnson is still very much a performer and has just returned from performing in Turkey, supported with some of his original band members from Pieces of Peace. During April 2005, Syl performed at the Barbican in London, as part of "It Came From Memphis" - Hi Records showcase. Many soul fans in the UK knew nothing about the show or the artists appearing, and although the crowd was appreciative, the artists did not get the warm welcome that only true soul fans can show. This is your second chance to see this unique artist live on stage. Syl will perform not only hits from his Hi Records period, including "We Did It", "Anyway The Wind Blows" but will include songs from his own labels Twilight and Twinight: "Try Me", "One Way Ticket", and his northern soul rarity "Do You Know What Love Is" on Special Agent, plus many more, including a very special duet with Jackie Ross. This will undoubtedly be a night to remember - don't miss it. The remaining few tickets will be available on a pay on the door basis at £20.00, but we strongly recommend that you contact us using any of the methods listed below, making ticket reservations in your name. Food is available at the venue from 5pm until 9pm. DETAILS: Doors open at 9pm and close at 3am. Bar 'til 2am. 17. FROBISHER SOUL NIGHT SATURDAY 30TH APRIL 2005 Well, here we are again, the last event before our summer break. When Fred and myself started the soul nights 10 years ago, we had no idea we would still be in business in 2005. This year we have had some great nights - February with Sam & Arthur was outstanding, Sam was totally stunned at the amount of soulful requests he was getting asked for: "They're asking for my favourite records, it's just like Soul Essence". Arthur was also on top form, and both really enjoyed the night. We must thank you, the crowd, for your continued support. Tonight we welcome two Lancashire lads - BOB HINSLEY & ROBBO - both regulars at the Frobisher and very well respected. Admission £5 otd. 8 til 2am. Late bar. One special date for your diary - 22nd OCTOBER. Our 10 years anniversary. A two room 'niter is planned - Northern/Modern. 19. THE WILTON, 21 JANUARY 2005 So, the Wilton all-nighter’s January edition kicked off another year in good style. Good attendance, nice atmosphere, and a lot of good feedback on the night, judging by the regulars I spoke to. Guest DJs were all in championship form, Dave Welding being the first on. He played an excellent hour and seemed to enjoy his first performance up in West Yorkshire. Andy Dyson was on fire – absolutely brilliant hour by the South Yorkshire man. The newer discoveries he played really were top drawer. Great to hear not one thing that you’d heard for the very first time and liked, but several in a row, mixed in with some nice crossover stuff, and a well thought out assortment of quality under-played oldies. I only caught the first quarter of Dean’s spot, but he’s always had some good stuff to play. I’ll just jot down a few tunes of what was played on the night and let people judge for themselves. Mouse: Gene Redding – I Need Your Lovin’ – Bell; Ernie Johnson – I’m A Big Man – Cry; Clydie King – My Love Grows Deeper – Imperial; Larry Williams – I’m The One – Okeh; Ray Pollard – Wanderlust – Decca; Fantastics – Me And You – SS7; Johnny Clyde Copeland – Coming To See About You – Suave. You’ll see what a cracking nighter it really is. The Wilton would like to thank all the people who have attended for the last decade, for making it what it is. Cheers. John Britton

But this time weve gone one better --- Weve got them both together !!! Two top class Northern DJs. Ginger is probably the most well known and respected soul DJ in the UK and in Europe. Tim is equally well respected, but is also the owner of on of, if not THE, most comprehensive collections of soul records in the world. We have asked both to give us a treat and spin some of the rarities that they dont alway get chance to at some of the other venues. Therss always been a bit of friendly rivalry between the two, so let the vinyl fly and produce a CRACKING NIGHT. A night not to be missed 27th November Guest DJs BUTCH & ANDY DYSON
