For what it's worth, I've been playing it covered up as the Divine Sweets for reasons that may become clear sometime in the hopefully not too distant future. The LP is good (and cheap), but I think "What are you thinking" is my favorite of the lot. - honky

It's a monthly night called Dig Deeper, hosted by pomonkey and myself, featuring a live performance from a soul artist we love, but who hasn't played NYC in a while - past shows have included Don Gardner, Tami Lynn, Dean Parrish, Young Jessie, Harvey Scales, Eula Cooper, and the Mighty Hannibal. Here's our advance calendar: February 28 - Garland Green (first NYC show since headlining the Apollo w/ Joe Simon in the 1970s) March 28 - Delia "Dee Dee" Gartrell (first NYC show in 20+ years) April 25 - Lee Fields (first solo NYC show in 3-4 years) Here's our website with photos and sound clips from past shows: https://www.myspace.com/digdeepernyc Come on over for the show - the more the merrier! Wish I could help sort you out with a copy of Lee's 45! - honky

Happy New Year! We're pleased to announce that this month's Dig Deeper on Saturday, January 24, will feature Atlanta, Georgia soul star (and current Bronx resident) the Mighty Hannibal, this time backed by the Sweet Divines and the Divine Soul Rhythm Band. Advance will call tickets are $7 (tickets will be $10 at the door if we have not sold out), and may be purchased here: http://www.ticketalternative.com/Events/3207.aspx Hope to see you there! Stay tuned for news of forthcoming months' shows as we get them confirmed - we're working on some pretty exciting ones... Cheers, - honky and pomonkey Check our myspace page for photos of past events and live recordings of last month's show. http://www.myspace.com/digdeepernyc

Hi Paul - the tracklist is here: https://www.hearingmusic.com/yankee_tracklist.htm Price is free, but with a totally voluntary donation to a charity of your choice if you wanted (people went with everything from Oxfam to my personal favorite "a couple of quid behind the counter at the pub"). - honky

Thanks for the kind words - glad you've been enjoying it! I'm working on the follow up, but have been sidetracked by a lot of time spent on organizing our Dig Deeper nights. Planning to be a 3CD affair of a little crossover/modern, a little 60s stomp, and a little funk - should hopefully be done by mid '09. Must agree with Big H - the Numero compilations are phenomenal. Lest anyone think we found Eula Cooper ourselves, full credit goes to the guys at Numero for a lot of hard work researching the fantastic Tragar / Note / Super Sound compilation. She'll hopefully be over in the UK in 2009 as well - do not miss her!!! Merry Christmas, all! - honky ps - Still have a few of my last one if anyone missed it the first go-round...

Lil'lavair And The Fabulous Jades-i'd Be So Happy
honky replied to arnie j's topic in Look At Your Box
Actually they're from outside of LA. The funk side "Cold heat" was reissued by Now Again (associated with Stones Throw). The reissue had the mono cut of "Cold heat" on the flip, not "I'll be so happy". Here's the full story: https://www.nowagainrecords.com/lil_lavair_...jades_cold_heat Photos of the band and a black & white scan of the original are here (the original label is red): https://www.nowagainrecords.com/lil_lavair_...us_jades_photos - honky -

We're hoping to book her at our club night (Dig Deeper in Brooklyn, NYC) for a live performance, and haven't had much luck tracking her down. I know she performed in Toronto a couple years ago, but other than that... Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, - honky https://www.myspace.com/digdeepernyc

Thanks very much to everyone who came out for August's awesome Dig Deeper with Obie "Young" Jessie. We hope you were blown away by it as much as we were... Unfortunately, we don't have any photos of the night to share with you (email us if you were there and took any!), but we should have an audio recording or two up on our site soon... On to September. We are very pleased to announce that we have booked Dean Parrish to perform at this month's Dig Deeper on Saturday, September 27, with backing band the Solid Set and backing vocals by Jaime and Leah from the Nouvellas. Despite being an NYC native and resident, Dean has not performed publicly in NYC in over 40 years. Advance will call tickets are $10 (tickets will be $15 at the door) - and can be purchased here: http://ticketalternative.com/Events/1229.aspx Don't blame us if it sells out. Dean has performed for crowds of over 1000 in the UK and Europe, but the Five Spot's capacity is just 250 - to hear Dean belt out "I'm on my way", "Bricks, broken bottles, and sticks", "Determination", and more in an intimate venue should be nothing short of astounding. We cannot wait! Hope to see some of you there...cheers, honky http://www.myspace.com/digdeepernyc

Pretty surprised that so many people bid on this - guess they didn't know that a 500 count box was recently found, all issue copies, stone mint and unplayed? - honky

Will post this in events when everything is finalized, but Mr. Robinson (pomonkey on soul-source) and I are starting a monthly soul/funk night, the first of which will take place Saturday, June 28. It will be at Five Spot Soul Food in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn (easily accessible on the A/C/G subway to the Clinton/Washington stop). Great sound system and wooden dance floor. More importantly, we're really excited to have booked Don Gardner to play his first NYC show since 1969 - he and his band will perform before we start DJ'ing that night. Mr. Robinson will be one of the guest DJ's at the aforementioned Subway Soul on Saturday, June 21 (@ Fontana's in Manhattan, 105 Eldridge between Broome and Grand). Bossy Boots is the other guest - had the pleasure of DJ'ing with her this past Saturday. Both have excellent records and will rock the dancefloor. On June 7 and June 14, Lynne K. and guests TBD will be playing soul and funk in the back room of Union Pool (484 Union Ave,) in Williamsburg. I am more than a little biased, but Lynne always plays great stuff, as those who heard her in Seattle, Chicago, and Malmo, Sweden last year can attest. Every Wednesday at Botanica (47 East Houston Street between Mulberry and Mott), Mr. Finewine plays great soul records, as he has for the past 11 years in the same location. You should also be tuning into his radio show "Downtown Soulville" or downloading his weekly podcasts on wfmu.com - great stuff. This is a bar night, not a dance night. Dancing is actually not allowed here as a result of NYC's archaic and rather ridiculous cabaret laws. Also, on Friday, June 20th, Mr. Finewine and Carlos "The Paw" will be doing their Horse River Social soul night at the Royal Oak in Williamsburg (594 Union, on the corner - sign is on the door, not easy to spot). There's probably more stuff going on, but that's a thumbnail sketch of what's going on in the NYC area in June soul-wise. Hope that helps. Drop me a line - happy to suggest restaurants and bars, depending on your tastes... - Richard / DJ Honky ps - Lombardi's is great, but it's very hit or miss lately. I've had both divine and very disappointing soggy pizza there.

A friend of mine had a cartoon at his desk at work with the caption "There was no trading on the stock exchange today - everybody owned exactly what they wanted." Kind of reminds me of that. - honky

Hi everyone - Just a quick note to say thank you - so many people have had nice things to say about my CD (I'm a little overwhelmed, actually), and I feel bad that I've now gotten so far behind on my email that I probably won't be able to write everyone back individually...so now in a group forum - I'm glad you've been enjoying it! Many thanks also for the kind donations to all the various charities - I know they will all be much appreciated. As my tracklist link didn't work for quite a number of people, I've redone it as a plane old html file - I think this should work for everyone: https://www.hearingmusic.com/yankee_tracklist.htm I look forward to meeting many of you on my travels and out of town gigs coming up later this year. In the meantime - enjoy the autumn and beginning of winter! Cheers, - honky
-
As I know some people don't have iTunes (where the tracklists should come up as I uploaded them...), here is a full tracklisting for both CDs: https://www.hearingmusic.com/yankee_tracklist.txt Any spellings and errors are a result of extreme jet lag. I managed to have enough time between trips to pack up another 20 or so copies this weekend - hopefully they will be with you all later this week. Also, to clarify again - donations are purely voluntary - you can send them to whatever charity you would like. I'll be gone this week as well, so there will be a slight delay for anyone requesting a copy before this coming Saturday. Hope everyone will have a good week! - honky
-
Thank you! Wish I could claim I used some special audiophile technique, but all I did was use a plain old Technics 1200 with a basic Shure M44-7 cartridge, run it through a Vestax mixer straight into my Mac's standard audio card... - honky
-
Hi everyone - First off, many thanks for everyone's kind words on here and in emails/PMs to me. Really pleased that everyone is enjoying the CDs so much! Apologies that I've not had a chance to respond to most emails as I've been focused on just trying to get things packed up and out to the post office - I sent out #370 this weekend. I'm on the road quite a lot the next 2 weeks, and there will be a delay for folks who've contacted me after Saturday, but I'll get them out when I get home...but I do still have copies. Have a good week everyone! Talk to you soon... - honky ps - Oh, for those who have asked, the reason for the charity connection is that people have asked me in the past if they could pay me for my mixes, but I don't think it's right that I make money off of them if the artists aren't making anything. So, I came up with that as an alternative. pps - Also, for those who asked about this being HM22+23CD, and my funk mix being HM21CD - numbers 20 and below were all pretty bad in comparison, so I'm not sharing copies of them any more.
-
Thanks everyone for their kind words and emails - sorry I haven't had a chance to reply yet...been busy making trips to the post office! I think I got another 50 in the mail since Monday - whew. Hopefully everyone should get theirs by early next week at the latest! Have a good weekend, all... - honky
