March 10, we have our Dig Deeper night with Eric "Monty" Morris at the Bell House in Brooklyn, plus soul & Jamaican 45s spun all night before and after the live acts... Details on this and our past events up on our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/digdeepernyc Hope you can make it! - honky

We were lucky to bring them to Dig Deeper this past April for their NYC debut. They are phenomenal live! Here's a little sample of them covering Ray Frazier (sorry the lighting ended up a little dark on the video): Even better, they are incredibly nice guys - someone bring them over to the UK! - honky
-
As an aside, here is the Velvet Hammer / the Green Berets doing "Happy" live at our Dig Deeper night back in 2009: Someone get them over to the UK - they were incredible live!! - honky

Important to use good cardboard - you never know what Mother Nature and the postal service might do to your record in transit. Amazingly, the 45 inside survived this beating:

Deadwax on the Tempos is: 67-C-506A-RE, matrix stamp, (Delta)64811 Not sure how to type the "Delta" symbol, but that's what's in front of the 64811. Also, the label on the left under "Lenoir Music Co." says 66-C-506-A (different from the deadwax), and on the right, the time is listed as 3:15, and "Arr. by Gene Page". Writing credits are in a different order also - (J.Peters - B.Sanders - W.Douglas). Probably more info than anyone cares about, but happy to put up a scan if anyone is curious. - honky

Curiouser, the Tempos on Canterbury 506 and the Younghearts appear to be different takes. Both start out with the same first verse: "Ooooh baby Ooooh baby And it's a mighty long road when you're trying to make it all alone And you got no one in your corner to stand by your side Now all it takes is..." The Younghearts then goes into: "Now you don't have to be, baby, a millionaire..." But the Tempos version goes directly into the chorus: "A little togetherness, baby, that's all we need..." It'll be a few days before I can check the deadwax on my Tempos to compare. Do all of the various Younghearts pressings have the same structure of 2 verses before the chorus? - honky

Darren - As you pointed out in the auction listing, he also uses the alias xxxxx (matches the email address you listed above), and he is a dodgy seller as well - he tried to sell a copy of Mr. Soul on Genuine back in June of this year. I suspect Ebay would like to track him down as well as they ended up refunding the full cost of the record as it was paid for via PayPal. PM sent. - honky

I'll second Michael's reply - We were so flattered when Katherine contacted us about doing the documentary, and we've been really impressed with everything she has put together thus far. She's putting a ton of effort into this film. Look forward to seeing several of you over here in just 2 weeks time for the Soul Festival! Good grief, there's a lot to get done in that time!! - honky

Jacob's work looks fantastic because he usually sets up his own lights / flash on stage which sync's with his camera. Really makes a difference in capturing the moment! - honky
-
Speaking of which, Darrow is trying to get a hold of Rose - does anyone happen to know her whereabouts? ps - Thanks for the kind comments on the photo from our night, above...all thanks should be directed to Jacob Blickenstaff who has been documenting most of our nights and countless other soul events around the US. He's currently got an exhibit of his work up at the Stax museum. He's got an incredible eye for capturing the moment - he is going to go far as a photographer...

honky replied to honky's topic in Record Sales
All orders paid for by today just shipped out. All still avaialble except medium size t-shirts which are now sold out (both green and cream). Thanks very much for the interest! - honky -
Billy Prince was selling some "Best of the Precisions" CDs at his performance at our Dig Deeper night in March - there were a few left over from the show, and I offered to help him sell them. In addition to their well-known classics like "Such misery", "I wanna tell my baby", "Instant heartbreak (just add tears)", there are also 2 previously unreleased tracks from their session with Jerry Williams for Atlantic when they were in NYC - "Keep on remembering" and "I kiss your face". The CDs are $10 each, plus shipping (which I'll calculate as needed - to the UK, it will be about $3.96). Payments via PayPal. If you'd like to order something, just drop me a PM or an email to djhonky (at) hearingmusic (dot) com. Cheers, - honky

We now have posters from the first four of our Dig Deeper shows from this year available for sale: Darrow Fletcher, Tami Lynn, Billy Prince of the Precisions, and Kings Go Forth. Posters are $5 each, and are 11 x 17 inches (roughly 28 x 43 cm), printed on nice cover stock. All designs by our friend Mark "Marco" Weddington, who does really incredible work. We also still have some of the Brooklyn Soul Festival t-shirts and posters and the Marva Whitney and Green Berets posters I mentioned earlier this year: https://www.soul-sour...1entry1237372 Payments are via PayPal. Postage TBD depending on what you order - shipping for 3 posters to the UK is roughly $8.48, for reference. If you'd like to order something, just drop me a PM or an email to djhonky (at) hearingmusic (dot) com. Posters from our show with Bobby Patterson in May will be offered up if any are left over after the show on May 22. Cheers, - honky

All of the above are great (although have not ventured to Mr. Toubin's) for sure! I met most of my close friends in NYC (including my wife Lynne) at Subway Soul, and Matt's night is always stellar (sadly travel for work and too much Dig Deeper planning have kept me away for far too long). Our upcoming Dig Deeper nights are this Saturday Feb 27 with Tami Lynn, March 27 with Billy Prince of the Precisions, and April 24 with Kings Go Forth. On our myspace page, you can find some recordings of our last two shows with Darrow Fletcher and Walter and the Admerations / the Green Berets, as well as some DJ playlists in the "blog" section: https://www.myspace.com/digdeepernyc You just need to stop the second player partway down the page that is broadcasting the Tami Lynn records before playing the myspace player. There are a ton of photos and videos from past shows, too - the Darrow Fletcher videos should be going up in the next week or so. Hope your trip coincides with one of our nights (typically 4th Saturday of the month)! Cheers, - honky

Hi Bec - We do our Dig Deeper night on the 4th Saturday of the month typically, but usually don't book the night until a few months out - Michael and I do this in our spare time, so can't get things planned more than a few months out. We are just about to announce our March and April nights for 2010. 2011 is a long ways off! We plan to continue doing a larger 2-night soul festival at the end of summer with multiple artists - last year's one was with Otis Clay, Maxine Brown, Barbara Lynn, Roscoe Robinson, and Hermon Hitson... At that event, we had a number of great vintage shops who sold at our record & vintage fair at the festival - hope to do the same thing in the future. You can hear some recordings of our last night in January with Darrow Fletcher up on our myspace page, as well as a few recordings from last October's show with Walter & the Admeration's / the Green Berets. Just be sure to stop the second player farther down the page which is currently broadcasting Tami Lynn (who is playing our February night). That should give you a flavor of what goes on at Dig Deeper - in addition to the live performance, we also DJ before and after. Here's the link: https://www.myspace.com/digdeepernyc Hope your trip will coincide with one of our nights! Cheers, - Richard / DJ Honky

Walter & Admeration's, Marva Whitney, Brooklyn Soul Fest
honky replied to honky's topic in Record Sales
Thanks everyone for your interest - will have a busy visit to the post office later this week! For those asking, it looks like shipping for all 3 posters to UK / Europe will run $8.48 ($2 for the tube + $6.48 for the postage). Still have some left if anyone else is interested. - honky ps - Now that I've sorted out the packaging, I can report that shirts fit nicely inside the poster tube, rolled up... -
We've been selling these at our Dig Deeper nights in Brooklyn - thought we should offer them up so others in the scene could enjoy them too. Posters are $5 each, and are 11 x 17 inches (roughly 28 x 43 cm), printed on nice cover stock. All designs by our friend Mark "Marco" Weddington, who does really incredible work. These are from our last thee shows in 2009, the first annual Brooklyn Soul Festival, Marva Whitney's first NYC show in 40 years, and Walter & the Admeration's aka the Green Berets first show ever performing all their own music. We also have shirts from the Brooklyn Soul Festival, limited quantities of S, M, L, and XL sizes in both cream and antiqued green (the green is bright - it's the ink that's an antiqued finish). Shirts are $20 apiece. Payments via PayPal. Postage TBD - whatever it costs to ship it to you, we'll just pass that on, no need for a markup on that. If you'd like to order something, just drop me a PM or an email to djhonky (at) hearingmusic (dot) com. Posters from Darrow Fletcher will be offered up if there are any left over from his show on January 23! Cheers, - honky
