  1. Sweet Sherry - J.J.Barnes Sheer quality, and that's something I don't get tired of!
  2. My insurance company said my records are not a collection but a lot of individual items. They said it would only be a collection, if it would be less complete by taking one away. Like a pack of cards it would be no good if you took one away. I agreed that it would not matter, apart from the value, if you took ten away.
  3. I had a copy of The Cavilers demo and it had the very same Stan Pat sticker on the label. He must have had several copies!
  4. Some people like paying a lot of money for records. It's the only way they can feel they are buying something worth having! I suppose I'm lucky, I like the records enough to appreciate low price records just as much as the expensive ones!
  5. Crossover was originally meant to describe Northern Soul records that could crossover into the new Modern Soul scene. These were usually newly discoverd 70's on even 80's records. Somebody once described crossover to me as "records that were made in the 1970's, but the production/arrangement belongs in the 1960's". As time goes by, the term has evolved to mean any midtempo soulful record that sounds later than 1970. Individual people will have different definitions on it!
  6. Two fabulous double siders, "I Don't Want To Lose You Now" and "Just Be Sincere" Jackie Wilson - Brunswick. "Dearly Beloved" and "Do You Believe It" Jack Montgomery - Scepter.
  7. More than I sold it for, £25. Soul Bowl had them for £3. John Anderson must have found a batch of them. I only bought it because of the Del Larks. Back then, it was a good obscure soul record that would not have been played in a venue. I thought I did well selling for a decent profit several years later! Shame I didn't have a crystal ball!
  8. If you have the definite original record to compare with the suspected copy, you can usually tell the difference. The plastic they use now is different from the plastic used in the 60's and early 70's. They don't make plastic like that anymore. The print would have to be the same font/style and the paper quality the same. Just small markings can give them away. It's not as easy as it first appears, as collectors and dealers have been looking at these records for 50 years!
  9. Interesting topic. You can collect originals without spending too much money. There are plenty of originals of great records still available. If i had to start again, I think I could put together a nice little collection for myself, without going bankrupt! It's different if you want to DJ with originals, then you might have to break the bank!
  10. Ed, Those genre's you mention, "Ska, r & b, jazz, funk, disco, 60s soul, black and blue eyed" are not pure! Just like Northern Soul, they are each made up of a hodge podge/ mixture of music! I know Northern Soul music is selected from those genre's, and others. But that does not stop Northern Soul music becoming a genre of it's own, when it all comes together!
  11. Dictionary explanation of a music Genre; "A style or category of music"!
  12. I know fully well what you are saying, as I have been involved with Northern Soul for a long time. But times have moved on. I think in 2021 the Northern Soul scene has been established long enough, and matured enough, for it's music to be called a genre. I think you are right that we should agree to differ on this, just different view points.
  13. Unfortunately yes. I cringed when they were first played, and still do now! But if you look into any genre of music, you will find great records and really bad one's.
  14. The connection is they are both within the Northern Soul genre. This is because they have been accepted, on the dance floor, by the Northern Soul fraternity. The acceptance on the Northern Soul dance floor always has been, and should be the denominator of what is or isn't a Northern Soul record! (This is just a basic view, and there are records that should be played, but haven't had the chance yet. Also there are different styles of records within Northern Soul that the DJ needs to recognise, depending on what the people want at the event.)
  15. There are Northern Soul titled CD's, LP's, Auctions, Sales lists, Books written about it, events promoting it for about 50 years, this site we are on and other web sites. A fanatical fan base, it's known all around the world, etc. What more can it do to be known as a genre?!
  16. Genres like Rock and Roll and Country & Western are not pure music forms! They are made up of many different fragments of regional styles and types of music! They are made up of many different genres of music, just like you describe Northern Soul to be. If they can be respected music genres, when they are made up like Northern Soul of different styles, why can't Northern Soul be respected genre as well? And as I mentioned earlier, the dictionary describes a genre as "a style or category of art, music or literature". Northern Soul fits both of those requirements.
  17. This is the dictionary meaning of genre, Genre/ ˈʒɒ̃rə,ˈ(d)ʒɒnrə/ Learn to pronounce noun 1. a style or category of art, music, or literature. "the spy thriller is a very masculine genre". Northern Soul is certainly a style and category of music!
  18. Why can Country&Western be a genre and Northern Soul can't? When I look at a record list titled Northern Soul, even if I don't know the records, I know by the name what kind of music it will be. That's a genre to me! The mainstream music business will not recognise Northern Soul as a genre, because people on the outside never have and never will understand it!
  19. I agree that black or white should not be differentiated against each other. It's more to do with 1960's USA culture than the colour of the writers, arrangers, producers and singers! Now Northern Soul is as much a genre of music as Rock&Roll, Country & Western, Reggae and Folk etc. These types of categories define a style of music and Northern Soul is a style of music, as well as a scene and a fraternity!
  20. Nice find! The vinyl Nashville matrix stamped copies are originals.
  21. That's very good and interesting, but Northern Soul had/has people from all walks of life, not only working class. I know Doctors, Accountants, Teachers, Bank Managers etc that have been a very keen part of the Northern Soul fraternity.
  22. Someone told me there are two Walter Scotts. The Ivanhoe label "Brand New Girl" Walter Scott is a supposed different artist to the one mentioned in this post.
  23. Yes that's true, but a lot of expensive records in recent times used to be common. I think most of Darrow Fletchers sides on Groovy and Jacklyn are well worth having. I like some of his 70's tunes as well.
  24. I remember it from tapes in the mid 80's. Excellent record but I can't remember it played out. It has been a collectors record for many a year! I can't go through all my old Shades Of Soul mags, but think it could have had a write up and picture in one of the editions?
  25. It is an easy way to pay for something that does not cost the buyer or seller anything. The problem I can see is, if you are not happy with what you have bought, you can't get your money back. Unless your bank will step in! Hope this helps, or have I missed something here?
