I do like legal reissues from the 70''s on big labels like London, Brunswick, Pye, Mojo etc. They are usually great quality sound productions from the master tapes, when the vinyl record industry was at it's height! They are all proper analogue recordings just like they were made. I can't define it, but I think digital recordings lose some of the atmosphere. Also it saves wearing out my originals

First time I heard Johnny Hampton was in the mid 70's Wigan Casino main hall. Richard Searling played it right after Ronnie McNeir. I thought those are the kind of records I want!
-
Nice to see Rod Looker is still playing the records. I have not heard his set since 1978. I remember he had good records and kept the dance floor busy.

The coming of the internet has caused all this price madness. Before 2000 the only people who knew all these great classics were dedicated Northern Soul collectors and the hard core allnighter fraternity. The internet has opened it all up to any Tom, Dick and Harry! You tube, Goggle, Ebay and online auctions etc. The internet is here to stay so we have just got to live with the consequences.

Yes, the footwork was so good they seemed to float just above the floor! Also the guy's used to do more of that working along the dancefloor with a sideways step, moving from side to side. It's hard to explain but I know it when I see it.

When I see all these records going for big money, it goes two ways! If I haven't got it I think it's crazy But if I have a copy I'm a little pleased about it Even back in the 70's the monster sounds of the day seemed to go for relatively high silly money! Also hardly any copies of these records are being found in the wild anymore, so the supplies are dwindling!

Thanks for the excellent info. So I was on the right track, but should of gone with The Platters, Detriot productions instead of Stanley Mitchell. Things like "Going Back To Detroit" etc. -
The Carstairs - It really hurts me girl - Issue Vs demo?
Solidsoul replied to Soulsearch's topic in Look At Your Box
That pink reissue has the number 802 on it. That is wrong. That's the number that was used when Red Coach was distributed by GRT Chess and is on the original white demo. No stock copies were made. When Red Coach(Red Lite) repressed it for Global records in Manchester they were up to about release number 808. But they stuck the old 802 number on it and that has made it look like it was the issue to the white demo. Gene Redd ran three different labels using the Red Coach name. The first Red Coach label had Appointments on it. The second Red Coach label had two releases distributed by GRT Chess. 801 and 802, the Carstairs release. The third Red Coach label was distributed by Red Lite and that had many releases on it. This third label started on number 803 onwards. They used a plain red label with black lettering for releases 803 to 806 then went back to the old Chess GRT pink label design. So sometime later, after 806, is when they did the special pink label press of the Carstairs for export to the UK market. Global records in Manchester paid Gene Redd, the label owner, to press a 1000 pink issue copies to sell to the UK Northern Soul scene. Because it was a monster sound in 1974/75 but only existed on white demo copies from 1973. -

The Carstairs - It really hurts me girl - Issue Vs demo?
Solidsoul replied to Soulsearch's topic in Look At Your Box
Well if you want an true 1973 original, you need a Sterling stamped vinyl white demo. The original 1973 release only got to demo stage. There where no pink issue copies made at that time. If you are happy with a legal reissue that was pressed up for the Northern Soul scene in 1975 by the label owner, buy a pink styrene issue. Both play well, but the demo is high quality vinyl. -
If you type "Indelgents" into the Soul-source search box you will find several topics covering this. I remember it being discussed a number of times. I think it's a great record and a good one to hear in a venue!
-
Yes there are plenty of yellow label copies, as well as green. Most other releases on the label have green labels. They may have run out of green paper at the label printers! Great double sider!

A friend of mine was dj'ing with an original vinyl copy. It was late and we had all had a few beers. He missed the sleeve and dropped it. Landing on it's edge, it rolled along the floor and he had to chase it! We were all frozen with horror, but luckily it was alright! Gwen survived! We can laugh about it now, but it could have been costly!
-
Yes it's a "style or category of music," hence it's genre. It's just some people will not accept the dictionary's explanation. They think they know better!
-
Northern Soul Music is a genre. A catagorie of music. It doesn't matter who invented the tag Northern Soul, it describes a scene and a type of music! I don't think people like Elvis Presley and his contemporaries went into the studio and thought "I think I will make a record today to fit into a genre" They just went with the fashions in music of the time. What was selling and getting in the charts.
-
So now your saying Northern Soul doesn't exist! I always laugh when someone says Northern Soul isn't a genre!
-
Yes and all those genres you mention are a mix up of music from all over the place. Those genres you mention are just labels put to a certain music, and that's what Northern Soul Music is. The Northern Scene is the people, the venues, the fashion, the talk. Northern Soul Music is a genre (a category of music).
-
If you're into Northern Soul you know what it is. If your not a Northern Soul fan, you probably will never know!
-
O.v.o will be around a long time yet! Never underestimate the power of the super ego!☺ I suppose o.v.o holds things on an even keel. It keeps the novice totally inexperienced Tom, Dick and Harry from dj'ing at the big venues!
-
I Can't Hold On - Lorraine Chandler £520. Absolute Northern Soul classic, but it has never been particularly rare. Double it's usual price.
-
Yes I was going to say much the same. Knowing what and when to play them makes a great DJ, not just having the rarest records. The continuity of some dj's slots is a complete mix up. Experience is needed to do it properly.
-
I have enjoyed the records played by the DJ's already mentioned. A few more I did enjoy, but not sure if they still DJ, are Bob Hindsley and Mick H especially when he played his lesser know stuff in the DDA room in Lowton a few years back. I know Richard Searling is not top of the tree anymore, but he has great taste in Northern Soul and can still do a great spot.

It can't be, because it's me in my house!
