  1. Took 2 hours to get here from north London, and another half hour to find the venue and somewhere to park!! First time here so thought I'd check it out. Nice club, great dancefloor, cheap door tax. Arrived at 9pm so can't judge the previous 5 hours. A little bit too much 70's disco for me, but the locals seemed to enjoy it. Had a good time anyway. Will consider coming back.
  2. Very disappointing. 1st time going and expected a proper NS night, instead it's lots of sad old drunks staggering around spilling pints of beer all over the dance area (not a dance floor as it is held in a shopping arcade which was cold and the music way too loud and distorted). The music was too commercial, full of the same tired old 'crowd pleasers' with probably less than 1% being real NS fans. The only saving grace was the Skull Bar which had a cracking mix of rare soul, Mod, Ska, Motown and others. Small and intimate with some proper soulies in, enjoying the sounds and getting down. Drinks prices were expensive and a thug at the entrance demanded I open my bag without saying who he was or showing any ID. I refused until he proved who he was. He confiscated a part-filled bottle of water! Is this a rock concert?? WTF? It was only a 1 hour drive from North London but it wasn't worth it, I'd rather drive 3 hours to the Black Country for much better soul nights. I won't be back.
  3. Great thread, very interesting stories. It was 1975 at secondary school and in the cloakroom at the end of the corridor was a crowd of boys watching something. I got closer to see three 5th year lads doing spins, backdrops and everything in between to the sound of soul coming from a cassette player. I asked a kid, "what's this?" To which he replied, "it's northern soul you div, dow yow know nuffink?" I was mesmerized and tried to learn and hear more and found out about soul nights in nearby Wolverhampton and other black country venues but my parents wouldn't let me go. So until I was old enough I had to suffer hearing my dad's god-awful modern jazz and my sister's toe curling pop charts sh*te around the house. In 1979 I started technical college and met another apprentice electrician in class who went to Wigan once a month...and the rest is history! I still try to crowbar in a soul night once a month now, despite arthritis and everything else. KTF.
  4. True Northern Soul fans give this a wide berth, don't waste your time, it's just a 1980's pop charts DJ who does children's parties and weddings. Not one decent NS record. Not a NS crowd there. Very disappointing, I won't be back.
