  7. As an aside to the Next generation topic, the first spot is to be dedicated to the younger interest and they can play whatever they soulfuly like. We're putting em on first so they can bugger off somewhere else later and enjoy themselves!!
  8. I'm in the process of setting up a new night in Yorkshire. Yeah I know there's loads of problems with that but the biggest one seems to be fees. Now, as a z list DJ I've played at many do's for nothing or something pretty close. At one venue I was told I could have as many bottles of beer as I wanted, alas there was no bottle opener to go with it!!! That is true but I managed to secrete every bottle on my person as I left!! ANYWAY, can any of us fine chaps (and chapasses) agree on or note from past experience, what a venue should be reasonably be expecting to pay an individual who guests at a do. What I'm trying to fathom out is whether a £4 door tax with 150 capacity could afford anyone but me and crossover Chris to do the night? Believe it or not this is a serious question ......... Coming soon to Yorkshire ... Cheers, Jim
  9. Thanks Steve, that's a big drop.

  17. I was just sat here tonight listening to an oldies box from my garage. If it wasn't for my asthma (and age) I would have kept on dancing! Cheap records eh? who needs them !! Just wondered what are the top 5 over-priced tracks and the top five ignored dancers which we should've been dancing to over the last 12 months??? Hmmm
  18. Can't remember where I heard this but I think Soft Cell actually wanted Frankie Valii's "The Night" as their first single but the record company ruled against this and encouraged them to release Tainted Love. Not sure if this is urban legend or actually the case though!
  19. I'm proud to call missen a z-list artist. I ran a thread a while ago about playing 30 mins on a limited budget. The tracks you all suggested were superb and go to show that, really, Northern needn't be such an expensive way of life. OK so I mainly dj scooter rallies but have also done a few Northern venues. When I pack my box up I hope that I've tried my best to inspire, safe in the knowledge that if the punter likes the track he can probably get hold of it (if he searches hard enough). Up tempo but danceable was the advice Dukesy gave me and I follow that! If in doubt (as I heard at Prestwich ....... play an oldie
  20. When I'm at a do and hear a great track, Tony (my mod mate) says "i prefer the original by ...... Say Otis Clay and "the Only Way Is up" he says "prefer the original by Yazz" (funny the first few times). Now whilst I know he's trying to wind me up, but how about a list of all those tracks that have hit the top 20 by being covered????
  21. I think that is more "nasal" than whislting! - what an angry song!! Weller just before he came out as a Soulster . Great album though.
  22. I know it was a long long time ago but can anyone remember the Charly album that had a rip-off of the Pepsi advert of the time (mid 70's I think). It went something like back-droppin' soul spinnin' bag carryin' friend makin' etc etc. If so can you recall the full text (or post a photo). Would also love to know what the track listing was. It could only happen over here!!
  23. I've previously bought some stuff from this chap, seems decent enough ... and if you go on his website it gives you his direct telephone number which I've previously rung. Hope that helps. Jim
  24. Anyone got this and wanting to sell?? Cheers Jim
  25. It just goes to show that there are some superb tunes at a realistic and affordable price. I loved this thread with a capped price range - most were under £300 (per 30 min set) but sound fresh and danceable. It just goes to prove that there is no need to play boots when there is such an untapped and danceable soul source out there without a massive price tag - it's a case of having the balls to play them - cheers all for a great thread. Jim
