Although not as overwhelming it does feel to me a bit like losing a parent - someone who has always been there has gone. I'm neither pro nor anti monarchy but she has done a hell of a job and all on our behalf.

RiP Syl Those albums he made for Hi in the mid '70s are among my favourites of the era. "We Did It" is just sublime - if I had to describe soul music to someone who'd never heard it then this is the track I would choose.

My "Martin Peters" track is There's Only So Much Oil In the Ground by Tower of Power - sadly as relevant now as it was back in the '70s.

Gregory Porter at Hoochie Coochie - awesome Earth Wind and Fire - Birmingham Hippodrome in 74 - stunning Luther - Manchester Apollo 86 - brilliant Bobby Womack Birmingham Odeon in 82 - powerful Kool and the Gang - Barbarella's in 74/75 - life changing But, the most memorable gig for me was Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon at Rolleston Youth Club in around 72. Never before or since seen such energy/noise/movement it was utterly spellbinding

Just a Little Misunderstanding for me. Heard for the first time at my cool friends house in around 69 or 70 and I was hooked. Swiftly picked up from Boots in Burton together with the Four Tops Greatest Hits and I was away.

Simply Soul for me too, although I do like to use Soul Brother occasionally. -
It's not even soul - in my opinion of course. At the time it came out all you could hear on the radio was an unremitting stream of utter tripe - peddled mainly by the knuckle dragging cretins on radio 1 et al. So frustrating that at a time when so much brilliant soul music was being made all we could hear was Mud, Abba, Q***n etc. Never heard the likes of Latimore, Dramatics, Leroy Hutson for example just crap and more crap. Been boiling my piss for almost 50 years now - time for a lie down!
