Just been thinking about old venues ive been involved in over the years, and by far the best had to be the saturday night sessions at the notts palias in the bali hi between 1984 -87. Originally this was meant to be a oldies night but around that time id just sold my first collection of originals and been out and brought every current big 60's sound i could lay my hands on ,Plus a load of at the time unknowns the nights ran from 8pm till 1 am with just myself d.jing at first . They quickly became popular with the nottingham crowd of the time. After around 6 months i started to get guest's on with the likes of Keb and Guy doing regular sets . interest grew and before i knew it we had people coming from everywhere the music policy was now upfront 60's .. This got the attention of a certain promoter of the time who wanted to run allnighters at the palias and use down stairs as well . Within a year and a half Shaun Gibbons had moved in promoting his allnightrers but i n negotiations with manager Mick Knight ihad retaind the use of the bali hi and keep the musicall policy the same we had many great night with sum of what are classsed as classic sounds being spun donw there first loads of s.s's used to go byrne ,kitch ,chalky ,andy dyson ,to name a few

Ok here's the true story behind this i know because it was me who found it it was found in rob smiths shop in nottingham in 1980 by myself , i used to work for him and got first nibs on anything new that came in . a guy from nottingham called mike gordon who used to collect anything from l.a. sold this along with every mirwood release on demo and issue plus a shed load of other l.a based labels . it was me who covered it up then rob decided not to sell it to me . he played it out around the nottingham area for a couple of years before eventually selling it to guy with some other stuff in 1983. i eventually brought it of guy a couple of years later, then sold it on to tony clayton in 1987. current value around the £500 mark id say , you never see it for sale .loads of other releases by rod keith on the label mostly gospel type

Hi Ady as stated before not been since young brett d.jed but always loved the 100 club, my thoughts are bring back the membership . the townies although they make up numbers and finance the night are generally ignorant ,they get in your face when you danc and wind you up, ask trickster ! my other surggestion is run bi monthly and knock a couple of quid of addmission every little helps lol no seriously i think if you reduce addmission by couple of quid you'd be suprised of the results . under cut the opposition . long may you continue. regards steve phillis

Oldies V Newies V Old Newies V New Oldies
Speedlimit replied to Dazdakin's topic in All About the SOUL
looks like the plots beeen lost here you slag new sounds of you dont give the time of day to listen too then you dont want to hear them at nighters well iv'e been on the scene 36 years this year and as far as i can remember new records have always been played in the main room at every nighter iv'e ever been too the new sounds of today are the oldies of tomorrow , i know you won't agree example mello souls been round since 85 great record just being accepted by the oldies crowd -

The scene could be around for decades to come ,but only if the majority of venues i e oldies nights gave younger blood a chance . ie on the dance floor d.jing etc most seem to shun them and think theyer takin the p..s , we were all young once . also get rid of the baggy trouses and beer towels they dont know how daft he look to the younger generation
-
yet another big ticket sound on ebay Walter Wilson love keeps me crying originally played by mr darge then butch who also as the inst this is the 4th know copy what you recken this will go for awesome uptempo soul of the highest order

if a beat up copy like this sold for this stupid amount then the next decent copy to turn up the sellers gonna want triple the amount this went for when are us uk soulies gonna learn were being ripped off big time in my opinion with the amount of so called rare items thats turned up this year alone the people stateside are taken us for a ride big time no offence to our stateside soulie friends but what was once rare seems to be turning up in numbers

dont you just love people like this? they throw a shed load of talc down ,dance to half a record max, then sod off to another part of the dance floor and do exactly the same. by the end of the nite you can do the bolero without movin a foot
