  1. Same backing track... the Cracksteppin of course came out on 45 as Kelli Evans and Donald Albert..
  2. Regarding the two step scene, Gareth is right that it came out of the reggae/ 'blues party' scene in london, basically because the groove fitted really nicely with the downtempo 'lovers rock ' sound. By the time it got up to Manchester and Rod was selling it and i was buying it, it had become affiliated with the 'Modern soul' scene (which had slowed down in tempo massively under Richard Searlings direction) because it fitted so well with the kind of downtempo new releases that were being championed then.
  3. Always loved 'Keep it up', especially the long version on the white demo, but definitely a club sound! Was 'Brothers and sisters', the second single? another great dancer with a bass line that rattles your spleen...
  4. I agree Bob, I think Nºmero do an amazing job and seem to go to incredible lengths to make sure no stone is unturned, and yet things still manage to slip through despite despite that..... I was in no way criticising them, but making the point that it seems that it's difficult to make a definitive statement that something wasn't released based on the memories of artists or label owner's recollections.....
  5. Nºmero don't always get it right- I picked up the 'unreleased' Sonia Ross on Super Sound some years ago.... Great find Bob, and as Gareth says all the better for being a fantastic song....

  11. I know Alan hasn't started a lookback thread, but just to quickly say what a great night we had last week at the first 'Diamond Feather @ Future Shock', ballads and steppers night at the Soup kitchen in Manchester city centre... great atmosphere, great beer and great tunes. George and James do this every week with a different theme, Funk, ballads and steppers, boogie and disco, and on the last Thursday of the month a veritable melting pot of all things soulful at the 'temple soul nights reunion' where you can hear more of Alans tunes together with some of mine and Phil Wainwrights, Adam Leaver's and Dave Hulston's; next week being a very good place to start the incredible Eurocultured soul weekend which ends on the bank Holiday monday and for those with Stamina, Insomnia or a large bag of pills, will take in steve cato's 'soul or nothing' on friday, the Radcliffe All nighter on saturday and the eurocultuerd alldayers on sunday and monday....... Anyway, i brought a little box of steppers to the party....... in no particular order Arthur Foy-Love Dreams (MCS) 9th Creation- Mellow Music (Track) The Meters- Be My lady (Warner Bros) Vaneese and carolyn- goodbye song (polydor) The Superstars- come to me (TAPS) Jeff Perry - Ive got to see You right away(Arista) Jocelyn Brown - If I cant have your love (Posse) Marshall Donovon and Broomfield-Thats Love (Augusta) Chocolate Milk- how about Love (RCA) Billy Baker -Describing Love (Garden City) Byron Blue -I am with You (Lyons den) Peace Love and Happiness-aint nothing but a love Thang (abab) Shades of brown -How could you love him (on Top) The Experience Unlimited - You got to tell me (how to love you)(gaynote) South Funk Boulevard- Skying High be together (Captain funk) Waymond Hall-(Inever knew love) Til I found you (Jamal) Memphis-inside My love (West Coast) Mystique-Fill You up (Curtom Lp) ricky irving-show me your appreciation (mainline)
  12. ..and an Appleray issue..
  13. ....and the first one's up on e-bay for buy it now $3000
  14. Just re read that and it sounds like I was unhappy with the deal with Marc, or that I thought he'd stitched me up in some way.....far from it in fact, as I asked him if he wanted to sell , and then offered him the price.....afterwards of course I thought I maybe should have offered less (like you always do) , but was so desperate for it.... Just wanted to clarify that, and in any case, with George , Andy and Steve playing it , it may well yet turn out to have been a bargain.....
  15. Yeah, I've spun it in every set i've played since I had Marc's copy. I actually thought I'd paid over the top for it at the time but I'd been desperate for it since George Mahood played it to me probably 12 months before. I reckon it will be a monster if more copies come out of the woodwork because it just has the lot; great social concious lyrics, fantastic vocal and a funky edged, choppy guitar lead backing that just builds and builds!
  16. Ha ha.. it was always James Fountain, that our Mum used to swear at when Me and jordi played it.......She loves Wally Coco though
  17. It's in ref-o-soul Tommy-it's called 'Little Joe'.
  18. Got two spare tickets for the Ritz show on Thursday in Manchester. £15 each. Can post or arrange pick up before gig. PM's please
  19. There is definitely a 45 release of this, Liam Quinn currently has it covered up, infact he showed me who it was but I've forgotten ....doh! I like it too! he played it round our house and we mixed it into Barbara stclair when it breaks down and it sounded great. Liam goes under the name 'too darn soulful' on here if you want to pm him....
  20. Same track both sides.....
  21. Thought it was Kentucky Steve.
  22. Among my constantly changing top 20, there will always be, Willie Tee Teasing you again, Ty karim on Romark, Vee Gees-Talkin', Differences- 5 minutes, Fantastics-where there's a will , but the one for me which hasn't yet been mentioned, and which i feel is probably the most perfect crossover record on many levels, is...... Four Dynamics-Things a lady ain't suppose to do on Peachtree It has just about everything wanted in a soul record from every perspective you could think of!
  23. George, Dean's involvement came from the same perspective as Rod Dearlove and was expressed at the 'Parker's' soul nights which he co promoted with Richard Searling. The early doors sessions were almost exclusively rare, midtempo seventies and was the first place i heard the likes of James Phelps-look on your face, Ty karim on Romark, Willie Tee, 'Teasing you again', Cynthia Sheeler on J.B's, Alex Brown etc. As these records reflected the kind of sounds being played across the hills in Rod Dearloves Thorne nights at the same time, Parkers is often spoken about in the same breath as being in the vanguard of what was to become the crossover 'scene', when that phrase was finally coined. With regards to Dean's 'across the board' style , parkers was at a time when newly released music did not jar so glaringly against late 60's early 70's , and that, together with Dean's funk/jazz/latin proclivities, the contemporaneously flourishing London 2-step scene, and the left overs from the Rare Groove explosion made for a glorious mix that many promoters have tried to match over the years. This, however in itself, has nothing to do with the term 'crossover'. I know Dean does take a peak on here from time to time and would be interested to hear his perspective.
  24. The 'Tigerlilly' releases, Bobby Boyd , and Jackson Sisters, always seem to command high prices!
