  4. Try Rod @ Voices. Has Gunning For Love cheap. Voices Rich
  5. Agree Mr H 100% of the way. Shep - Like you I've been paying a whole ot more attention to LP's lately and for me ( a very PO) stick the LP on and listen to it to its entirety. It was made for that and nothing else. All the above mentioned and so many more are essential - Ebay throws up some amazing bargains but they tend to diddle you on P&P. the last record fair I went to I bought approx 25 Lp's for about £40 from one general dealer. Gladys Knight / William Bell / Persuaders / Blue Magic / Pickett / etc etc. What a joy to sit sipping wine on a sunday afternoon listening to these. get SunnySoul on here - He'll tell ya! Rich
  6. DOH! Rich
  7. Nearly Ted. Rich
  8. Hey Soulmag.. I'm not privy to information that you obviously are (and I did say I hope I was right in assuming he didn't have a pile) And if YOUR right then hey I'm too trusting. However I wouldn't spend (or couldn't) that amount of money on a 45 recorded within the curved walls of a tin bath! But there is always hearsay/conjecture whenever this type of 45 crops up and without solid evidence at the moment we're all right if you get what I mean. I know a pretty true fact/fictional story about one dealer sitting on a BIG pile of a certain 45 which regulary fetches between £250 - £400 and I see this 45 on sale on a regular basis - Now if I was to mention said 45 and dealer I would get slayed in public AND threatened by some form of legal action as has happened to someone I know before. Yet you (and I mean anyone or a lot of ppl on here) would back up and lick the a** of said person if he/she retaliated. Brad's not doing any sort of the thing here so in god (read: rare detroit 45s ) i trust. Rich
  9. Hindsight is a wonderful thing in collecting - I remember reading reviews from Mark Bicknell about Clara Hardy and how he wouldn't let it go for less than a grand... but he enthused so much about the disc and how much he loved it THAT was the reason why he wouldn't want to let it go at that time Personally - And I hope I'm right - I dont think there's a stack of Lester Tiptons' sat at said dealers house. Those sort of finds are becoming less and less in this multi digital/worldwide market and ebay has more or less been the start point. Thats not to say - and dont forget this - that main / big dealers themselves are/maybe sitting on a good few copies of in-demanders / rarities yet they get no stick whatsoever. It's in their business interests to let one or two go at times. On the flipside - how many records (over the years) have been looked at as common/cheap yet here we are in 2008 craving and looking for supposed 'old time cheapies/mid price' 45s? I recall buying Delegates Of Soul twice for £40 (albeit a lot of money at the time circa 90/91) but it was nowhere near the rarity of a Lester Tipton. Yet what is the price now? Copies always sell whatever the price - We moan and grumble about the price but they always sell! As they will on the Lester 45s. Lastly re. La Beat 45s - It's oft been said that most of the stock was water damaged / chucked away. For a non-selling non hit 45 it may be worth remembering ( I hope ) Rich
  10. Yes Mark that was the one - 2 bids and to be honest I thought it would have gone for more. Mint too. Agree with Baz - Minters / In-demanders do seem to fetch the book money even on ebay at times. Think its difficult to put a value on a sub £50 record thats not very well known or in vogue (say some group / sweet / deep stuff -which to be honest is where the bargains lay for me) There's so much difference on price as to who/where. Take the Eddie & Ernie on Jayboy. £300+ on JM auction - One on here a week later for £125. . . . Crazy world! Totally agree with the ebay hammering on here - You do take a chance at times but the plus' far outweigh the negatives in my experience (touch wood) Rich
  11. ... And probably one of THE very best arguments for playing unissued/first issued (whatever the year of issue) recordings on the rare soul scene. 'Rare' as in totally unissued and not for the work of Francis / Paul Mooney/ Garry Cape et al we wouldn't even bloody hear the things let alone someone sticking their neck out and putting their money where their mouth is. Rich
  12. Forget 'book' price - It doesn't exist. If I put records up for sale at 'book' price I'd probably never sell a stick - Yet pride myself on having a collection 'worth' thousands... Whose 'book' ?? John Manships? Tim's? You get people on here all the time quoting book price (and I have done this myself in the fact of pointing out main dealer prices) yet never sell it or them. Surely book price is wrong?? There are bargains to be had everywhere - Just look at some of the stuff being sold on here. Ebay? Yes you take your chances sometimes with some sellers but in my careful experience you can get some bloody great records out there for peanuts. Just picked up a Jimmy Braswell on Jar-Val for £20. . . . Knockout record (both sides) and for me knocks ten tons of s*** out of a lot of 'big' records. But thats my take on the type of records I buy and I probably don't buy in-vouge genres or 45s but I get what I like at great prices. As Baz 'whooped & hollered' - he got some great records cheap! Thats the point IMHO - great records at great prices whatever the record and whatever the price! Buy at what you think is a great price for a 45 which you will love and cherish and gaze longily at for many years to come. Rich
  13. I suppose its a an acquired disc - I'm not sure that its really well known? I never saw any for a long time then a few crop up. Would have thought with more interest in uptempo R&B type discs this would have flown! Mad piano player!!! Anyone got a clip? Rich Clip On This Popsike Listing
  14. Love this 45 Harry! I first heard this on a amazing tape off John Powney years ago. I always thought it was 'Little' Tony Clarke. Anyway.. great great 45. Have been a few through ebay over the last couple of years - various prices. No more than ton? Absolute storming track. His first 45? Rich
  15. Was it 'I Gave It All Up' on Clown? Rich
  16. Guitar Red - £25/£30? Gwen Owens - £10? Grover Mitchell - £15? Depends on where you look really. BTW Grover Mitchell .... What a fabulous deep 45! Highly recc. to anyone. Rich
  17. Where would Bill Dennis' Shrine 45 come into play? Don't think there's many copies?? Never seen one for sale either. Love it though! Rich
  18. Actually discussed before! Saw Zerben Hicks' name and I thought we'd mentioned this before. HERE AND!! HERE! Would make a mighty mighty fine discography - I haven't read 'There's That Beat' but there was mention of an in-depth article proposed for the mag. Rich
  19. I would hazard a guess the Memphis Black Gold & Detroit Black Gold are totally un-related. The memphis early / mid 60s was one which had a mix of country / R&B (See scan) and obviously a lot earlier. The other a division/dist. of NYC label (As Baz stated). I'm guessing that there were quite a few 'Black Gold' labels across the states. Obviously detroit connections on the 'treasure' design - Ronnie Shannon - Paul Riser - come up on song/production credits. Ronnie Shannon owned???? Below 3 label designs of the detroit connected label. I do have a discog. somewhere but not sure how complete it is. I'll look. But not related to this one (Memphis)
  20. Quick check on JM & Moerer.. UK numbering seems to make sense - 19501 / 02 / 03 But the Us numbering system seems to be all over the place prefixing 76### 77### 78## doubt there were that many releases! Might have a (uncomplete) one on the Pc at home John. Rich
  21. I read in a Soul Up North (I think) someone was offered that - Have seen one go thru ebay for less but who knows? Doesn't turn up much at all. What I do know is that I phoned R.Domar once when he listed it in his catalogue for a fiver and it had gone.... Rich
  22. How long has this been 'known' ? Obviously a lot of 45s mentioned are 'established' rarities - What of the new/recent rarities - difficult to guage in some respects but with the worldwide market I would have thought there's a fair few. The above track tho - F***** superb IMO. As Chalky mentioned earlier ' Trade My Soul' E Williams.. Ranks as one of my all times that one. Cant be more than a few surely? Rich
  23. Last Tee Fletcher on Popsike went through at $56 - LIttle Jewel (Tayster) seen about £100? Gone up a fair bit in the last year or so but would have thought you'd get one cheaper. Mamselles - £100 demo / £150 Issue?? Think the issue is harder -looking at prices on popsike (obviosuly not written in stone these things) Rich
  24. From Chicago originally according to Wikipedia. I've always assumed they're the same group. And what a group! Rich
