I too feel cheated by those charletons on Tomorrow's World. I recall within one programme they featured a 'Vocal Eliminator', which when plugged into one's Hi-Fi would remove the vocal from ANY tune merely at the twist of a knob. Hunted for years for one...all I got offered were graphic equalisers which never really did what I wanted. (I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere, and am now fully expecting Rod to find it! )

I've also seen plain yellow demo labelled UK copies with hand-typed credits. I find UK presses over here too...along with French, German, Italian and Dutch stuff too! Last week I found a Dutch Al Wilson 'Now I know what love is' for a few Yen. However, I've now just recalled a recent memory I've been trying to surpress...I missed a Stateside stock copy of the Invitations (WWWMB) just before Christmas...a collector in front of me took it...840 Yen...about £4!!! Naturally I proceeded to tell him that he didn't need it and he should let me have it as it was 'only' a UK copy! He said he had a US copy too, but he still didn't put it back...grrr! C'est la vie, or shoganai as we say over here.

THIS is what Northern Soul instrumentals are all about...pure dancefloor fodder...if only the recording quality was less bassy. It is actually a Bell acetate with one word type on it, 'Moods'. I wonder if there is a vocal version out there somewhere yet to be discovered?

Here's my old WD of TNWTTAG...yes tougher than the black stocker. Seen equal amounts of WDs vs. Stockers for her YLSW. Porgy & Monarchs' 'That girl' is tougher on a WD, though lists often state 'Rare black copy'...nonsense imo. Another one which receives varied comments on sales lists is Sammy Ambrose 'Welcome to dreamsville', which seems slightly tougher on a WD...imo

I collected VeeJay avidly for years...well for the Soul releases anyway! I even had a compilation lined up ready to roll, but I left the relevant record company for another before I could get it scheduled. Anyway I digress, I've had a few numbers on the plain white demo label variants...the Dontells and Cherylle Thompson spring immediately to mind, and they were also on thick vinyl too...can't recall the pressing plant, sorry. Never had a TOP on a plain white one...rare...and in my experience I've seen more stock copies than demos of said track, though only just! Frickin' fabulous track...oozes Soul...tremendous lyric, but can also understand that it isn't for everyone being the beat ballad that it is. (Susan Maughn is pleasant enough too.)

Same here, Gareth...was kinda hoping you did have something concrete for us. I wonder if there were any clues on the master tape boxes/notes...pageing Mr.Croasdell or Mr.Rounce to reception, please!

I recall it surfacing about 5 years ago on master tapes...I'm sure I cut it for Adey C, who then played it at the 100 Club at the time...may still do, but I find it quite difficult to get to the club nowadays...bit far to go!

Good for you, Tony...but it is a pile of pants! 'Cross the bridge' is the only good side of the x3 imo...red stockers and WDs, East and West Coast variants on them both. (No Japanese release mind! )

You 100% sure on that, Gareth? Mossy, you may wanna check out the discs on Excello from the Exotics, Stacy Lane, the Avons and the Firebirds...I'm sure some will appeal to you.

Roger was indeed brother of Willie and cousin to Charles (Edwin Starr). He also recorded a disc on Dottys (Detroit) as Little Rodger Hatcher.

1968. I have a mint- stock copy for sale if anyone fancies it...£200...bargain for such a classic slab of soul!

Cody Marshall - Went for £250, which considering it's pedigree may be seen as cheap, dare I say. TNJ's - just the WD copy remaining if anyone fancies it?

There are two label variants on this one, one with, and one without a little logo on it...both are red. Avoid there other Rapda 45 (green label) as it isn't even in the same league. My fave...'It's everything about you', just ahead of GFACT.

I'd never seen the plain EMT label befre seeing Tony's copy (second scan)...interesting one. The other more common design saw two presses: The first has smooth labels and clean sharp print, whilst the second had a pitted label surface and slightly blurred/smudged print...and it was these pitted copies that appeared en masse a year or so after the Casino closed, along with the Larry Houstons, if my memory serves me well. Still sounds fresh to me too, although would've preferred that the producer could've given it some more bass, mind!

For reference, she had x2 Brunswick 45's issued in Japan, one being 'Do the whoopie' / 'Get to steppin''.

For reference to all you label/artist completists out there (!), the Japanese Pye copies have 'Whatever happened to the love we knew' on the A side.

...and to complete the picture 'Tenderizer' came out twice on C.B. Go for the yellow label copies (looks like Resist), as they have 'Who'll cry' on the flip, whereas the red label (later press and different font) ones don't.

Acetates with that design label on (including 'Candle') were made by Ron Murphy in the 80's for various collectors.

Top bloke. I worked with Brian (and Dave Evison) for a few years when we were all together at Charly Records back in the 80's! As you may imagine the main topic of discussion at the monthly sales meetings usually ended up about Northern! If anyone sees him next week, please pass on my regards...and indeed my contact details, if possible.

I've had it a couple of times...quite rare but not impossible or worthy of serious amounts of money...£100/£150 would be fair imo. Shame the production is a bit tinny on both sides and his vocal isn't the strongest. I used to put VOL on tapes as I liked the subtle NYC Soul feel to it. The flip, 'the very first time' is Ok too, early Motownish even, but nowt to get over excited about. Don't think it will ever cross-over to mainstream dancefloors, but is certainly interesting enough to Detroit label collectors. Never had anything else on the label.

Tony, The one pictured has 'Hey boy' as the flip and is a touch rarer than the other release (actually the first) with 'Deep' in italics. Some folk rave about 'HB', but in reality it is average at best and not really worthy of nighter spins or a large increase in price tag at all...imo. (note - I am not passing comment on this particular price tag.) The differences between the two recordings of 'You said' are minimal and not obvious at all unless you are indeed familiar with both takes...nothing to overly worry about...imo (Personally I prefer the take on the one pictured.)
