  1. Lucky Charms...rare disc...good manic flipside too. (Pat's acetate of the Padded Cell is slightly different to the finished Toddlin' Town release, by the way.)
  2. Hi Mike, Nowp, not had the Fabuletts and only come across one Barons disc on Mode (have you got them both, Dazz?), which wasn't Northern either side (can't recall title, but it was on dark blue/green Mode). The Ronnie Taplet is recommended...kinda reminds me of Leah Dawson's, 'You better change your evil ways', with plenty of tambourines and the occasional furp from a sax...not 'obvious New Orleans' in sound, but a nive grinder! of a tune! Would like a clean Jades if anyone has one?
  3. Not seen that one, Tommy...have you a scan? Here's the Kapp stocker...which oddly enough is still available...£25 inc.P&P.
  4. There are at least three original US Sansu label variants for IET: 1. dark blue ink-on-styrene - Bell Sound stamped 2. light blue paper label - Bestway stamped*** 3. white demo paper label - Bestway stamped*** ***- not all copies are stamped I rate one of her other Sansu tracks...'Show it'....which is more of a crunching stomper and shouldn't break the bank either. Great label, that Sansu.
  5. Got a disc through from Benji last weekend...well packed and quick service...nice one mate. Now, someone buy that Superbs 45, as it is cheap for what it is...imo.
  6. GK = Tell her you're mine LC = Tell me you're mine Similar titles, completely different tunes/lyrics...but both exceptional Soul with a capitol 'S'. I've also always loved their, 'Stop and get a hold of myself', also on Maxx (and also as by Carole Waller on USA), and have kept a copy of their Maxx LP (also reissued on Bell) in my collection for more years than I care to remember.
  7. ...and here they are resplendant in their Sunday best: Harold Taylor, Wendell and Reggie Noble, Same White and Glenn Dorsey (Interesting that they name check x5, but the pic shows x7.)
  8. 'ere you go, everything you always wanted to know about them...plus the lyric for you to sing along with the boys on karaoke night!
  9. I think it also came out on the reincarnated Soul City label too? I saw a white label 'test press' of it in a shop over here just the other week.
  10. 'Ronnie Taplet'...on a light-blue labelled Mode...another great slice of Northern...and rare.
  11. The Chapter Five's backing track for 'One in a million' was also utilised by Kenny Bernard, but his version didn't make it past the acetate stage.
  12. Fabulous track...and cheap too! I wrote this about it for Shades of Soul back in 2001: Leevert Allison - I Want To Give My Heart To You - Poncello 7004 Real swinging R'N'B (yet still Northern) flavoured stuff and another Ted Jarrett label track, but this one's a real down-home no nonsense mover! Leevert has a strong almost over produced in-the-red vocal, and the backing is big with swinging drum and cymbal work, powerful brass stabs and guitar work. The instrumental break lasts a minute with its change of key and direction mid way through, and a wailing woman adding to the mystery! A minor Stafford spin that has been forgotten by most yet not even heard of by the masses?
  13. The flipsides are different between the Polydor and Decca, no? I'd say the Decca stock copy is the toughest..unless someone has a Polydor demo?
  14. Just for reference here's the ARCHER pressed copy. Cracking tracks both sides...c'mon someone snap this up!
  15. What did the Ronnie Mitchell on Spectrum end up at?
  16. Really, I thought it was the other way around, with the RPR distributed one being the West Coast release, whilst Atac 7823 was the initial Detroit ARCHER pressed release? Nice on both labels, regardless! Happy to be corrected.
  17. I'm intrigued... What about the way Allen Toussaint plays his piano, as featured in Benny Spellman's 'Fortune teller' and 'This is for you my love, and Willie Harper's 'But I couldn't' (etc)...is that known as 'open chords'?
  18. It's on two labels, Mel. The easier is as the flipside to his, 'My first lonely night' on Era. As much as a stomper as it is, it really highlights that Jewel couldn't sing that well...unless he was having an off day?!
  19. If you like Greater Experience kinda sound, then you need this little beauty. However, for the best effect you have to play it at -3 to make it danceable! Recommended.
  20. Found a nice bunch of albums yesterday Have the following up for grabs: Tempests - Would You Believe - Smash: £100 each (x2 copies) Righteous Bros. - Souled Out - Verve: £25 each (x5 copies) feat. 'It's Up To You' LP only track - popular Stafford spin! All are stock copies in excellent condition vinyl-wise, with limited wear to the sleeves...nothing serious and no seam splits. Prices include EMS courier postage. No Paypal...cheques or bank transfers only, please.
  21. 'Moments like these'...'tis good! Who does the other version, Mel?
  22. This is a superb track...I wrote the following for Shades of Soul fanzine back in early 2004: BARONS - I'VE GOT A FEELING - ETAH 102 Another solid slab of New Orleans soul...just right for reactivation this one, as it was previously featured by Guy Hennigan during his mid 8T's sets, as 'Tower Brooks & The Empires'. This really is meaty and beaty with a chopping guitar that could take down a Giant-Redwood tree! Gutsy male lead vocal, more than ably supported by the band thumping out an obvious New Orleans sound with subtle guitar twangs and a brass section that could blow your playhouse down. Back to that chopping guitar...it's so up-front and in yer face throughout, dictating the beat, as well as being able to chop down those a fore mentioned trees! I used to have a WD of this number, but foolishly let it go, only to replace it with a blue stock copy (WD still wanted!) a couple of years later after much searching...we all make mistakes! By the way, have you noted that the label name, ETAH, is actually HATE spelt backwards...and it's also home for another Guy Hennigan monster, remember his 'Darrow Fletcher - 'Angel up above'' cover up, as that's Little Tony & The Hawks on Etah too. For other disc reviews, feel free to visit my site.
  23. Aw! shucks Off to view more discs on Saturday
  24. Yep, got a stock copy in excellent condition for £15 +P&P. PM me if you need it.
  25. Jeez must've been a long bath?! Anyhow, so, what about Ray's grinding slab of R'n'B/Northern on Krafton, 'Real, real love'? I've had WDs, burgundy and lime-green label copies...the latter two are often spotted with smudged print (possible re-press?). What's the going rate for this head-hammering slice o'soul at the moment?
