Oops...forgot that the Johnny Daye was different...I even had it pictured in my mind...doh! However, rest assured this Billy Storm is DEFINITELY the same label as Arin Demain etc. I've found WD's of it with the 'Star' designed logo...thought I'd struck gold until the stylus hit the vinyl!

I thought we once did a label listing over on RareSoulForum...will have to look when I get a chance. Off the top of my head there's also the great Lord Jim & The VIP's double-sider, Johnny Daye's semi-known mover and a not so good disc from Billy Storm, all outta the same stable as Jimmy Wonderful and Arin Demain.

Soooooooooooo good, Soulful too....highly recommended. I wrote the following about it in Shades Of Soul back in 2000: Ed Cooper - Just Like The Hero - Nimrod 904 Hey, do you appreciate a quality mid to late sixties Detroit production you do, then my friend this one's for you. How has this one escaped through the net and been overlooked for so long as it's such a classy sound, and will appeal to many fractions of the Northern collecting scene that now exist? A military sounding start with male group harmonies ooo-ooing over a beating snare drum and then a truly wonderful tight brass scale introduces Ed. Now, this guy has a great voice, yes just like dare I say Levi? "Just like the hero, I'm gonna win", right on, "I'll be right by your side, to love you and be your guide, and maybe make you forget the other guys". For sure he's gonna win her love, and proceeds to tell us how and why, whilst a lead guitar picks along and the male chorus give their responses right on time, all together creating it's late 60's classy feel within it's Joe Hunter arrangement. I've only just got my original copy back after letting it go in a trade years ago, and I've taped it for a few friends recently, and all agree it's a very "now" sounding disc. So, get it quick if you can, before this one gets its long overdue break, and the price jumps safely well into three figures.

I've also been playing some acetates cut a number of years ago (by Jason at Transition), and they still sound sharp. I fell it is a bit of an urban myth that they all deteriorate quickly...take care of them and they are fine. Just think of all the 60's acetates in circulation that still play well, even after DJ abuse! Sure, you probably couldn't use them as mastering laquers now, but the majority of them were not even made to be mastered from...more to simply play to prospective artists, labels, producers etc. It is also worth noting that the prices quoted by the Timmion boys are very reasonable...good luck chaps...the more acetate lathes kept in working order, the better!

There is indeed another track by them on Storm which is an orange label variant...but it is not as good as the track(s) we're interested in. Avoid it.

This particular goodie, "Let the show begin"/"Oo-ma-liddi" actually appeared on three different labels. The Prelude logo is the most common, followed by (in my experience) the black Storm label stock copy, then comes the Storm white label demos. The rarest format seems to be the Candix label demo copy...unless someone has a stock copy wihch would put that at the top of the tree...imo. This Storm label has nothing to do with the Detroit or indeed New York (Latin as in Tony Middleton) labels.

I may have mentioned it before (or was it on RareSoulForum.com?), that there is also an original acetate of the Chapter 5's backing track of OIAM, but with Kenny Bernard singing the song! The link is that they had the same manager (or was it producer - been a while since I checked!) at the time. A right thumping version it makes too, but still not as good as MaxineB, naturally!

Yep, I heard Alexis Korner play it too...was a Sunday night radio show, and I was sat in the bath...probably still recovering from the nighter on Saturday night. I went into town the next day and ordered a copy of the LP, which duly arrived the following week.

I spent 20 years in the music trade working full-time for various labels/distributors...loved every minute of it. It saddens me greatly to think back to all the great indie stores I had the pleasure to sell to once upon a time...now all gone. I'm now genuinely shocked further to learn of the demise of Pinnacle/Windsong. Sad days for the UK music industry. (Numero CDs are in all the specialist stores over her in Tokyo...in quantity...and they seem to sell through. More power to them, but 10,000 units sounds too high to me, even as a sell-in figure!)

You would have been welcome to the copy I have had for sale on my site for a while now...mind you I have £50 on it!
