  6. Is it more, or less Northern?
  7. I have a lot to thank Dave for. I was a fan...Chapter.1: Once upon a time, in a land far, far away (from where I live now!) I was a young and impressionable Soulie, and on my first trips to the Casino it was Dave's sets that I would really enjoy (alongside Searling and Rushbrooke). I still have the live-tapes and can recall him playing a diverse set from Billy Prophet through to Chuck Cissell...and come to think of it the Isley Bros' 'Take some time out for love' too, which is still a fave of mine. Hop forward a handful of years to Chapter.2: I was working at an HMV store when in walks Dave, 'Hello! I'm Dave and I'm your Charly Records rep!' Well, I was kinda gobsmacked, as being already a Northern Soulie I was already well aware of who he was! After realising that I knew what I was on about, my then store manager instatntly handed over the ordering of Charly stock to me from that point on! I would see Dave once per month on his visits and we struck up a good rapport...to the point of when Charly were looking to expand, he suggested I went for the position. He was also kind enough to sell me his copy of Howard Guyton...a disc I still treasure today as it graced the Casino decks whilst I, ahem, graced the dancefloor! And then there were three...Chapter.3: I took Dave's advice and went for the position of an albums salesman for Charly back in '85/'86. As it turned out Tony Warot was also going for the same job, but thankfully I got it...which did surprise me as I was still sooo young to be an album salesman (one usually became a singles-hyper, before 'progressing' onto albums). So, I therefore ended up working alongside Dave and indeed Brian Rae, who was also working there at the time...three Northern Soulies working for the same outfit! Very happy times! Record Hunting with Dave...Chapter.4: I recall sitting in on one of Dave's Signal Radio shows during my first week at Charly, when I went out with him to 'see how selling was done'! I crashed with Guy Hennigan for a few days and went out on the road with Dave on his round of record stores, and I think it was on the second day we hit Birmingham. Being the Soulies we were, he introduced me to paying visits to non-existing accounts 'in search of new business', which basically meant going to collector's stores in search of Northern! I did well at one place (Discery or Rays, can't recall) and found a Charles Anthony on Film Town, an Edward St.Ann on USA and a James Bryant on Renee for £20 the lot (or a lot less, certainly no more than £20). The evenings around Guy's were fun with discs all over the place...he played me Bunny Shivel ('Top Twenty'), which I liked and indeed he started to play it at Stafford over the coming months, but I digress. Epilogue: I recall when Dave's son Josh was born, and noting how proud he was...he was walking on cloud nine with stories of how Josh would play for Stoke City one day! He was so proud and inspiring in his approach to fatherhood. I don't get to see Dave much nowadays, but on the rare occasions we do bump into each other we have lots to reminisce about and I echo previous member's comments in that Dave is genuine and a great bloke...and is a legend on this scene of ours. If you're reading this Dave, keep on keeping on, mate and thanks for everything. Respect.

Never one to miss a trick, here's a nice looking Canadian one...£25 and it's yours!
  12. I second Neil's words...congratulations Max. I tip my hat to anyone who managed a business for that length of time...especially in the music business. I recall once upon a time when I was a young lad rep'ing for Charly Records in the mid-80's, that one of my customers based in Folkstone still had listening booths (as did another one in Hounslow!). I remarked innocently that they must have been there a fair few years...and joked that they must've sold 78's as new! The shop keeper replied, '78's? My dear boy we used to sell cylinders!' pmsl. They sadly closed a year or so later...think they were established in 1928 as an electrical store!
  13. Fabulous stuff! Many thanks for sharing the unreleased track...superb vocals/harmonies, organ and sax work. Does the acetate have a studio label on it?
  14. There is one particular groove that is too close to the next groove inside of it, if you get my drift? I've had a few copies come and go over the years and yes a poorly weighted arm, poor tracking and or a dodgy stylus will indeed lead to the stylus hoping into the inner groove. Blame the engineer as he/she should've set the lathe up to have more space between the grooves, or a deeper cut to compensate for the fact that it is a pretty long track. Great track even though it gets a tad tricky for the dancers as it speeds up juuuuuuust a touch mid-way through! £800 is way OTT imo.
  15. 'We the People' featured the following guys: Robert Taylor, Shabi Weems, Billy McEachern and Terri Gonzales...can't find a reference to a Raimon (sic) Flores. Thought the Ree Flores M&H track is an LA recording, whilst the Lion records tracks were NYC?
  16. Told you it was a nice copy! Cheap at twice the price! A tough WD.

I stumble across UK Action 45's over here in Japan quite often. They are usually quite expensive, UK stuff being a bit of a novelty over here, but every now and then I pick one up. I found this one not too long ago...for sale at £30:

I always have a smile and chuckle to myself whenever I see a Dottie Cambridge stock copy, as I recall having to beg my mum for a pocket money advance to buy a copy. It was my fave at the time and cost a whole £6. I stated at that point that I'd never spend more than £6 on a record. Within a month or so I then found myself buying a Dana Valery demo for £20...had the choice of a red or grey print copy too! I financed it by selling a cople of discs...and so the wheeling and dealing started...I was 9 years old at the time!

  21. Yes, folks, nothing to fear from ordering discs from me all the way over here in the land of the rising record price! The courier service I use never fails to amaze me...x3 days to a UK doorstep...from Tokyo...and trackable all the way via their website too! I do note however, that I am actually sending records back from the future, considering I am 8 hours ahead of the UK! So, y'all want to know the next cheap record that will fetch £100's, or what the winning lottery numbers are next Saturday?!

I have a rather fetching minty demo you can purchase, sir. It is within my sales pages on my site.
  23. Neil, I may be able to get you a spare on Japanese Contempo, if that is of use? PM me. I often stumble across UK pressed LPs over here in Japan, including a fair amount of rarer UK Tamla Motown numbers...found a Prime of Shorty Long on STML11144 not too long ago (for sale if anyone needs it?).
