  1. I saw Etta James at The Other End club in New York in 1981. I went with a mate Rob Hughes (Ace Records) to buy records and we spent most of the 2 weeks in Downstairs Records! We found out that Etta was on and went to the first show meaning to explore Greenwich Village afterwards. However, after the first show the waitress told us we could stay free for the 2nd show if we carried on drinking!!! Keith Richard turned up at the 2nd show and Bonnie Rait was also there and they both did a song with Etta. I know this is obvious but she was absolutely fantastic. After the show we went back to the dressing rooms and had a chat with her. She was very charming and signed the club flyer for me - attached. Keith Richard signed another one for me but sadly it has faded. I spent about 15 minutes talking to him and honestly he was just like one of the lads. I told him that I saw The Stones in Chester ABC cinema in 1964 and he told me an anecdote about it. I didn't tell him that I only went because Charlie & Inez Foxx were on the same show although I have to admit The Stones were great. On the way out of The Other End (which was a relatively small club) we bumped into Joe Jackson and he signed the flyer after looking who had already signed it he wrote Joe Jackson (was here too). I bought Somthing's Got A Hold On Me on blue UK Pye about the time of release and Etta was always a favourite over the years. In fact the day before I heard she had died I was playing her take on the old standard Fools Rush In which she made sound like it was especially written for her which I suppose she made happen with everything she sang. Also I Sky Plussed the hour long Etta & The Roots Band from the BBC show the other night so that will be a good memory of her too.

  9. I was very lucky to see Otis in The Otis Redding Show at The Liverpool Empire - I still have the programme and the handbill that came with the tickets. On the same show were Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd, Booker T, Arthur Conley & The Markeys. I still remember it vividly and as good as all the other artists were, Otis did literally stand out physically and by talent, head & shoulders above them all. I particularly remember him doing I've Been Loving You Too Long while playing the piano and there was a bit where the band stopped playing and he stopped singing and the whole theatre was totally silent until he put a finger back on the keyboard to bring everyone back into the song. WONDERFUL. I lived in Wrexham at the time and did not have transport and me and the missus got a train back to Chester and hitched back to Wrexham with a lift who took us right to our door! It seems like it was a totally different universe then!

  12. That's precisely why I prefer the Bessie Banks Pete. It's raw and spontaneous which is often a key element of many great soul tracks, no multiple retakes and 'cleaning' up that squeezed out any rawness from most of the UK 60s releases. 'No ad libs, screams, wrong notes, mixed up vocals etc in UK pop/attempts at soul. A great U.S example of spontaneity is Brook Benton & Dinah Washington 2 top stars who completely messed up Rockin' Good Way at one point but made it even better by leaving it in the final issue! I can think of others but no similar U.K examples, but no doubt you will!

  14. Sorry Tony but the Moody Blues was a typical UK bland, note for note attempt on quality Soul stuff regularly being issued by UK artists at the time, hoping very few people would get to hear the original. And they were right, few ever did because of the stranglehold 'Tin Pan Alley' had on the radio playlists at the time. It was only possible to hear obscure soul on the pirate stations, if you could receive them, which was very difficult where I lived, in the welsh mountains. Nevertheless, I bought Bessie Banks 'blind' and it oozed soul then and still does, whereas The M.B. version is a pleasant oldies radio filler. Georgie Fame did at least 'know' his Soul and was very good live ( I saw him in the Tamla Motown tour of 65) but didn't usually hit it on vinyl for me, EXCEPT for his version of Last Night (the flip of 'Sitting') which I should have put on my list!
  15. Carol King is a dreary dirge I think. I did feel guilty about Mary Wells. I saw her in a Toronto night club, The Speakeasy, in 1987 with a couple of dozen others and I thought she was great. Plus I got to hear Cecil Womack, her husband at the time, sing solo! What a voice he had.
  16. A few IMO; Original First Edition (Kenny Rogers) Just Dropped In. Cover Betty Lavette Original Barbara Lewis - Hello Stranger. Cover Capitols Original Mary Wells You Beat Me To The Punch. Cover Alpha Zoe Original Isaac Hayes Shaft. Cover 20th Century Steel Band!! Original Timi Yuro What's The Matter Baby. Cover LJ Reynolds Original Eddie Floyd Never Found A Girl. Cover(s) Al Green & Esther Phillips Original Carol King Too Late. Cover Bill Deal - rousing typical Bill Deal treatment. Original Wilson Pickett If You Need Me. Cover Solomon Burke
  17. Mine was 1964 maybe early 65. I used to buy the Record Mirror which was great for Soul about then. In the ads there was a list available from Crown Records in the USA. My knowledge of soul and R&B was limited to what was issued in the UK. When it arrived the list was of Crown LP's and you could buy 2 for one so I sent off to L.A. for a John Lee Hooker and a mate bought a Brook Benton. To this day I always wonder where I got the dollars from. They must have been fairly cheap because I was earning next to nothing at the time and I lived in a small village in the Welsh mountains. Anyway the LPs were disappointing, very early stuff not full of tracks like Boom Boom. Dimples etc which I was expecting! Anybody beat this?

  21. This autograph is Ronnie Spector who was in the audience at a doo wop show in a club in New York in 1982. She was GORGEUS! In the show were Randy & The Rainbows who did the original version of Denise covered by Blondie, The Capris, The Mystics, The Harptones (A Sunday Kind Of Love) but best of all were The Jive Five with Eugene Pitt who oozed class.
  22. Ruth Brown in NY 1990, Clips from the show were on YouTube. I've also got Johnny Adams from the same show and the great Charles Brown
