  5. I'm hearing Joss Stone's version of Sugar Billy (Garner)'s Super Duper Love from 1974 on Fast Track records, on the radio all the time. Quite good without meaning to be patronising. However, you can find the original for less than a tenner & it's well worth it. Great slower funky soul tune, superb vocals & organ/guitar backing. Slim
  6. Thanks for all the help I'm Getting! The singer didn't sound like anyone popular that I knew i.e Tyrone/Little M. The film was about half way thru on BBC" on a Sat afternoon when I turned on the TV by chance. I waited until the end to watch the credits but typical BBC they never showed them! Regarding soul in other films, Ollie & the Nightingales were peforming in one film I saw on TV + The 3 degrees were in another top film in the 70s. Sorry can't remember the film titles I didn't realise then that I would be corresponding in a Soul Forum 20 years on! Sorry for all the exclamation marks! Slim
  7. In a club scene in the film there is a great funky dance track playing and the only line I can remember is 'Open the door and let me in'. It's not JB or any one I could easily recognise. I'd be really grateful if anyone could tell me what it was Slim

  10. Sorry, I should have previewed before posting, my typing was terrible there.
  11. IF anyone has listened to the current top pop 5 track Cha Cha Sldie by DJ Casper have you noticed the more than passing resemblance to R&B Time by E Rodney Jones? 'To the left, back to the right, skip it now'. Chord changes seem similar too! SLIM
  12. I agree with some of the comments above, particularly that soul music evolved from R&B, through Bobby Bland, Solomon Burke, The Drifters etc. So what exactly is Northern Soul that makes it distinctly different from the above? I particularly like R&B but must admit I couldn't get a handle on a lot of the stuff I heard in the R&B room in Prestatyn. However, a lot of the sounds I heard in the main room were a bit vapid to my ear. One room that was constantly full and dancing was the 'oldies' room that I thought had a great mixture of music, including a lot I had not heard before! I honestly can't understand why people get so worked up about labelling music. Either I like listening/dancing to it or I don't, if I don't, something I do like is bound to come along soon. It would seem to be asking a bit much for a DJ to play only the stuff that I like as if he would know! In my opinion the variety that there is around now is great and much better overall than the music I heard played in clubs in the 'old' days. SLIM
  13. The Walk is great. There is another nice version of it by Lou Cazz on VeeJay, with the Jimmy McCracklin orchestra. I'm not sure of the exact vintage of all of these 'newies' but I think they were pre '64 or thereabouts. Lula Reed - Walk On By Me Little Joe Cook - I'll Never Go To A Party Again Harvey - Any Way You Wanta Marv Johnson - Come On & Stop Patti La Belle - The Jokes On You Rosco (Gordon) & Barbara - Could This Be Love Carol Fran - I'm Gonna Try Barbara English - Fever/Bad News Sam & Dave - You Aint No Big Thing Baby - Roulette Betty Everett - I've Got A Claim On You Nappy Brown - Coal Miner Little Willie John - I'm Shakin ( There are 2 versions of this. the first issue has Cottage For Sale as the flip. The other has Person To Person. The latter is the better one). SLIM
  14. Hi Mike. Thanks for getting in touch. No luck in tracking down Dave Postie. As you say the name rings a bell with me too. There were a lot of wheelies from the Junction so hopefully someone will know of him. Cheers, Slim
  15. Hi Richard. Re; Eddie Kirk. I found 3 copies of this at Kop's in Toronto in the mid 80's & sold 2 copies at £15 each then. I found another copy a few months ago that I sold very quickly on ebay for £50. Eddie Kirk is/was a Detroit bluesman who became the guitarist in the Otis Redding band & I may have seen him at the Otis Redding Show in Liverpool in '67. He must have had a thing about pigs because he also did Hog Killing Time on King records & the incredible The Grunt on the Detroit Fortune label. Similar to The Hawg but much faster. Slim.
  16. Around about 1971/2, Bob (Detroit) Foster & I went shares for him to travel to New York to buy records to sell & make our fortunes. I had bought some soul packs off a guy in Trenton, New Jersey & Bob was to seek him out & buy more stuff. It cost us £75 each to send him off. I couldn't go as I only had 2 weeks holiday a year then & the first wife insisted I spend them with her not Bob. Still, I can't be too hard on her she gave me some of the happiest days of my life, they were over a weekend when she went to visit her mother. Bob kept a copy of the list we put out when he got back & kept a copy! You have to remember that there was not really a big rare soul scene in place then. Even Bob wasn't sure of what to buy. He bought as many copies he could of Mamie Galore - It Aint Neccesary which was the big sound & we got most of our money back through that track. Looking through the list, there are many I still have not heard of since & can't remember what they were like. There are others that I have spent years trying to track down again to buy for my collection. Here is a sample. 25p or 5 for a £1 Billy Shields - I Was Boy - Harbour. Duane Yates - Hold It - Njoy Freddie May - Heavy With Me - Diamond. Kim Weston - Love Me All The Way - Tamla. Bobby Sansom - Dont Leave Me - Sublime. Kim Weston - A Thrill A Moment - Gordy. Charlie Wright - Number One - Capitol. Wendy Rene - After Laughter - Stax. Del Rios - Just Across The Street - Stax. Falcons - Love Look In Her Eyes - Big Wheel. Jesse Henderson - The Gator - Gold Dust. Carl Ray - Baby I Love You - Down Home. Pat Lundy - Play It Again - ToTo. Marvin Smith - Time Stopped Demo. Soul Agents - Foxy lady - Atac. 35p or 3 for a £1. Theola Kilgore - I Cant Stand It - Mercury. Little Ralphie D - Take Me Back - 20th Cent. Al Reed - Sorry About That - Axe. Sonnettes - I've Gotten Over You - K.O. Sam Dees - Soul Sister - LoLo. Jimmy Ruffin - Heart - Miracle. Sylvia Robinson - Oo Wee Baby - Tru Glo Town. Chantels - Soul Of A Soldier - Verve. Tommy Hunt - Hold On - Atlantic. Barrett Strong - You Knows What To Do - Tamla. Rex Garvin - Strange Happenings - Chieftain. Billy Woods - I Found Satisfaction - Verve. La Brenda Ben - Camel Walk - Gordy. Chicago Loop - My Baby Comes To Me - Dynovoice. Various Prices Fabulous Counts - Jan Jan 45p. Darrow Fletcher - Pain Gets A Little Deeper 45p. Candy & Kisses - Chains Of Love 45p. Dramatics - All Because Of You - Sport 45p. Cody Black - Too Many Irons In The Fire 45p. Garland Green - Girl I Love You - Revue £1. Holidays - Watch Out Girl - Golden World 75p. Gloria Jones - HeartBeat - Uptown 50p. Bobby Barnes - The Skate - Cross Tone 70p. Temptations - Dream Come True - Miracle £1. Jimmy Ruffin - Don't Feel Sorry For Me - Miracle £1. ++Loads more. The dearest record on the list apart from Mamie Galore £2 was The Detroit Road Runners - Swinging Camels also £2!!!!! & believe it or not the sounds did not exactly fly out the door. We took ages to shift the Jimmy Ruffin's for example. The next year Bob went again to NY & Detroit where he met up with Martin Kopple & the rest was history as they say. Slim.
  17. Isn't the full title You Picked A Fine Time (To Leave Me Lucille)?
  18. Timi Yuro - It'll Never Be Over For Me - Liberty - I'm reliably informed by Rob Hughes who works for EMI & is a well known biographer & label lister that this was produced over here by Les Reed!! - I seem to remember the original LP saying as much. Al Matthews - Fool - CBS Moon Williams - Suspicious Love - DJM Solomon King - This Beautiful Day - Columbia Be honest tho' most UK productions were crap weren't they??
  19. As much as it sticks in my throat to say this I think Domar was right in his description. It is a fantastic track with Tony Middleton singing at his best in my opinion. Plus a great backing from BB who did many Northern Soul tracks particularly for Lou Johnson. Cheers, Slim
  20. Here's a few floorshakin' UK issues - leaning towards R&B perhaps but what do you expect from my user name?! All easy to get up to about £20 Oscar Toney - You Can Lead Your Woman To The Altar - Stateside 5th Dimension - Train Keep On Movin' - Liberty Jackie Wilson & Linda Hopkins - Say I Do - Coral Ben E King - Let The Water Run Down - London Otis Redding - Look At That Girl - Atco Wilson Pickett - Funky Broadway - Atlantic Drifters - What To Do - London Moses & Joshua - What's Better Than Love - Stateside Inez & Charlie Foxx - He's The One You Love - Sue Donald Height - Rags To Riches To rags - Avco Delaney Bramlett - You Have No Choice - Vocalion
  21. I've been asked recently whteher I knew 'Dave Postie' who came from from Llandudno Junction in the 60s and used to attend The Wheel. The name rings a bell but I just can't recall who he is. Anyone out there know?
