What about Billy Butler's Mardi Gras? - a great place with top live acts. I saw Al Green there on his first visit at the time of Let's Stay Together. Billy was and probably still is a champion of Soul Music and I used to see him regularly at venues in North Wales and the North West playing Soul in the late 60s and 70s SLIM

Get the Wade In The Water album. It was Ramsey's first with a big band backing. As well as the classic title track it has the first outing for Hurt So Bad and not a dud track in sight. Sound quality is terrific, as good as the 45s I'd say. You can get the original album for less than a tenner off ebay even from the USA. I even found a CADET postcard in mine inviting me to send in for a CADET catalog & newsletter to the legendary 2120 South Michigan address. Hurt So Bad was not issued as a 45 in the USA but was in the UK! SLIM

Anybody else see it today? Football Focus did a profile of Wigan Athletic ans kicked it off by showing the Casino from the outside and somme footage of dancers within to a soundtrack Of Frank Wilson - Do I Love You! Apparently according to FF, until the Athletic have become almost promoted the Casino was Wigan's main claim to fame SLIM

Help With Buying New Music Sytem Please
slimharpo replied to slimharpo's topic in All About the SOUL
Thanks lads. I live in Llandudno so I'll make my way to the Chester branch shortly. By the way Sam, have you updated your system from the tinny tannoy you used to play sounds on in Overton circa '64? SLIM -
My current M.S. is OK but basic. However, It only has an input point for my turntable. This means I cannot record directly from my turntable to my computer through my tuner. I am looking to update with extra inputs that will allow me to do this. I would be particularly interested in one that has a CD recorder. About mid price range? I've looked in Comet & Currys but all the models on sale seem to have only the one input point. Any suggestions/ideas including where to buy it would be welcome. Thanks SLIM

Don't forget the great original version by Bobby Marchan on Dial. Much less frantic but still a great dance track. SLIM

Try Mighty Clouds Of Joy - Time - What a stomping track. Produced by the great Dave Crawford and you can pick it up for about a quid on UK ABC!

I agree, I thought the whole DVD was riveting. Even the 'live' rendition of My Girl gave me goosepimples. By the way has anyone ever seen the original B&W video of that? David Ruffin seems to be singing something else entirely. Slim

I only went once, to see Steve Mancha perform. Except he didn't because of 'contractual reasons' (rumour had it his voice had long gone). He did a DJ spot of Detroit stuff instead (big deal). No refund tho'! SLIM

It is Troy Keyes as lead with the High Keyes. He also recorded as Mitchell Keyes on ATCO prod by Bob Crewe. SLIM

I saw the same show in the ABC Chester. Jim is right about The Miracles - Ooh Baby Baby with Smokey on his knees, great. Claudette was also in the group then. Little Stevie did a duet with his then manager, Clarence Paul on 'The Masquerade is over' who has also had records out and issued in the UK. Georgie Fame was also in the show to attract the 'pop pickers'. It truly was a tremendous show and I still have the programme. The crazy thing was that the place was less than half full, so the announcer asked everyone to come to the front to help create an atmosphere! That suited me and my mate as we were broke and bought cheap seats, hitchiked from Wrexham to Chester and blagged a lift home off Soul Sam and some other guys we both knew from Overton where Sam(Martin) lived who were in a pop group and later appeared and won 6 times on Opportunity Knocks! Some more Soul reads Clyde McPhatter - Colin Escott - Short but sweet Nowhere To Run - Gerri Hershey - A nice general read about soul music The Sound Of The City - Charlie Gillett - The transition from R&R/R&B to Soul Honkers & Shouters - Arnold Shaw - Mostly R&B oriented and good chapters on OKEH/Old Town/ Groove/Herald record labels The Sound Of Philadelphia - Tony Cummings - From the 50s to the 70s - A great read from one of the UK soul writing pioneers And last but not least - Last Train To Memphis - Peter Guralnick - It's not about R&R per se in fact It's a great read, hard to put down and Guralnick gets you to understand and feel how Elvis came to be so big. Lots of R&B references too SLIM
