  1. Good post - but from a different perspective a lot of the records Russ spun at Wigan particularly in the later days weren't seen as Northern Soul but rather out and out pop. Pop records have always been played but the feeling from many at the time 77/78 was that certain DJs were dropping the Soul Roots from Northern and the percentage of pop records were overwhelming. So I would find it slightly ironic that Russ would lament the lack of Northern Soul records on todays scene. I had a great time at Wigan loved some of the records and disliked others - but hats off to RW for getting it off the ground whatever his motives. Cheers Manus

  5. Hello Matt I think the term 100mph stomper originally meant anything fast and furious and mainly on the fours - I think when the dance you mention started to appear around 76/77 ? people began to equate the name of the dance "stomping" with the tunes they danced in this style ie faster funky style tunes - but it was definitely in use before this to describe the faster more traditional sounds being played. Cheers Manus
  6. Twas a bit odd Paul given how many Soul events there were in the surrounding towns of County Durham and Gateshead. Cheers Manus
  7. Yeah Paul I went to a Volks early last summer and there were only about 20 people there - Ion and Si were DJing - some nice tunes but not many people.
  8. Not much on in central Brighton in terms of rare Soul at the moment Winnie - something on once every six months or so normally promoted by Paddy Shevlin and there is also the annual August bank holiday niter. Used to really enjoy the Volks all dayers that Si Bridger used to run - had some great times down there. Cheers Manus
  9. Very sharp
  10. Great days Andy - that particular Newcastle v Leeds game will always stay in my mind as it was only my second away game ( not counting Sunderland because it's only down the road) - also there was a particular incident involving one of our lads who was big mates with the Shipley crowd - not sure if the Leeds fans on here will remember but it involved the burning of a rosette. Hope you and Paula are keeping well mate Manus
  11. Yes a fair few were wise enough to get out altogether - we foolishly stayed I could never watch Morecambe and Wise singing "bring me sunshine" without putting my hands over my head to ward pennies off lol. Of course it was "You are my sunshine" the Leeds fans used to sing wasn't it?
  12. Newcastle did a similar thing to Everton at Sunderland 69/70 and got into the Fulwell End before the Sunderland fans. We tried to do the same at Leeds on Boxing Day 1970 ( maybe Kegsy and Pete Dillon might remember) but the Leeds fans came in late and chased us down to the front and then it was pennies from heaven for the rest of the game. I was a 14 year old suedehead at the time and it was pretty hairy but a laugh apart from getting beat 3-0 and dodging the pennies. Cheers Manus

Always try to move away if I see talc being put on the floor - my knees are so bad these days if I slipped I never get up again and it is slightly naff - but to each their own Cheers Manus
