  1. I think I get what you mean Mikey
  2. I remember getting a wee bit annoyed listening to radio 4 about 10 years back when they were interviewing a Rave DJ and in response to a question about the Rave scene she said - you have to remember that this was the first time that British kids could go out and dance allnight to music. Nearly choked on me weetabix lol
  3. Yes agrees Douglas - very surprised to see the Parliaments in this list - great Detroit Soul in my opinion
  4. I agree with most of what Tee says too particularly the idea of out of town DJ guests maybe the likes of Soul Sam or Just Souls Sean Hampsey be great to hear them in Brighton or nearby. I wouldn't agree that Brighton is saturated though - in northern Soul terms we only have one fixed event in central Brighton and that's the annual allnighter at the Komedia. We also have Paddy Shevlins nights at the View which I prefer but are a bit sporadic. I'd love to hear a mix of underplayed oldies , upfront and some modern Russ but as long as there's a chance of good Soul music I'd do my best to attend. Cheers Manus

    Howard Tate RIP

Very sad news - he recorded some wonderful records RIP
  6. I worked in the kitchen of a summer camp in upstate New York in the mid 80s with two Black Chefs one from Chicago and the other from Virginia. We had a cassette player in the kitchen and one day I put on a tape with a lot of what we would class as Northern sounds - the chefs knew some of the sounds and not just the obvious ones like Gene Chandler NCSM. They were really surprised that I knew these records - and one of them sang along to the lyrics on a couple of the records. They were both late 40s - I was about 28 at the time. Also I put the same tape on at the gym on the camp and Jack Montgomery Dearly Beloved came on and one of the older white guys who was maybe late 30s who worked there popped his head around the door and said that he hadn't heard the song for years and had danced to it as a teenager. Cheers Manus
  7. Love Stealing is a fantastic track too backed with Come on and love me. Cheers Manus
  8. So very sad to hear this. Ted was a great lad and character - he'll be much missed by all who knew him. All the best Manus
  9. Fantastic mix Paul - wish I could be in Newcastle too on Sunday - sounds like it will be a great night on my old home turf. All the best Manus
  10. Wonderful tune and a reference point for many Soul fans growing up in the 70s I think Cheers Manus
  11. This is one of my favourite clips - great footage
  12. Darrell Banks Beautiful Feeling Cissy Houston He / I Believe And there'll be a free bar
  13. If you were looking down from the stage Jeff the North East crowd were about half way down on the left as you know - that was when you had your bootleg wedge haircut lol All the best Manus
  14. Great clip - love all the Soul Train stuff
  15. I remember joking at the time that if they continued adding records to the ender list that the first one on it would eventually be the first record of the night.
  16. MVPs Happy Cats Baby Dolls Didn't like the MVPs at all but I could understand it getting plays - but the other two are so bad certainly in terms of an allnighter Tony Galla is another one I wouldn't be too disappointed never to hear again. Oh and Billy Arnell Tough Girl - bad to these ears But it's all about different tastes - love Manifesto that already been mentioned and also Lou Pride overplayed but fantastic too and I suppose there's a difference for me between overplayed tunes and bad ones
  17. Agree it does nowt for me either - but it reminds me of the Rolling Stones rather than Cliff Richard

    Jerry Ragovoy Has Died

Very sad news - Jerry's name on a record was a guarantee of quality - RIP All the best Manus
  19. Contours - Just a little misunderstanding
  20. Nice one Steve
  21. I remember once at the Winter Gardens in 75 I'd given a copy of a record to a friend to keep and he'd put it in his bag in the cloakroom - later on in the morning my friend appeared with the record in 2 pieces apparently two blokes had decided to sleep across the bags - Mary Chapman was standing close by and immediately refunded the money I paid for the record - very sweetly and no questions asked - I was really grateful - a lovely lady. Must add that one of the best all nighters I ever attended was on the Pier the atmosphere was something else. All the best Manus
  22. Brilliant Paul - good on ya for making this gem available on 45 Cheers Manus
  23. What a brilliant night it was too - one of the best at Wigan for me Cheers Manus
  24. As you said in your first post people are different - I'm sure there were a lot of people who enjoyed what Russ played and more so there are people who don't really care of the origin of a record as long as it has a certain beat. But there are others who see the scene as Soul based and prefer the records they dance/listen too to have this background of Black American origin although I do think there are certain blue eyed records which would genuinely fall under the Soul feel umbrella - Dean Parrish, Gene Latter , Jason Knight , Paul Anka's Can't Help, Lynne Randell's Stranger , Larry Santos. But then there are pop records like the aforementioned Jackie Trent and Bobby Goldsboro, Muriel Day, Eddie Regan and tosh instrumentals like Police Story and for me these are not Northen Soul records and when these type of records began to dominate certain DJs playlists a lot of people stopped attending Wigan because it no longer felt like a NS venue and had lost it's way. I know Wigan rallied and played some of it's best tunes in the last year or so but I'm talking about a particular period when the dodgy records took over. Some people may see these records as genuine NS tunes that's fair enough - I don't. All the best Manus
