also Bazza - in answer to your question: the answer will paint a picture of the person giving it. Those who say on the thread that they believe a dj should entertain, change tempo, play to the floor and keep it varied invariably do that themselves - you can spot your kind of dj by looking at the answers on here - if their answer matches your thoughts then go and see them and you will most likely be pleased. with that in mind my own idea of what makes a good DJ is this. He never speaks on the mic except every now and again to say something like " Bobby Kline!" in an 'i've got torretts syndrome' kind of way. He cues records far too close so that when they start you can hear the platter winding up - despite the fact that he does not press the play button on the deck until you can hear the click click of the runout groove. He cant adjust a mic so he sounds good and more often than not has a voice like the one in the wizard of oz that says "follow the yellow brick road" In his record box he has lots of white label "assitates" as he calls em which he got from some dodgy website in america that cut em 2 for thirty bucks. of course he doesnt show these off, only his british originals are showing to keep the aura of respectability. When the floor is full he will play something shit to empty it and then spend the next 20 mins trying to get it full again only to clear it again with some obscure r&b track once covered in marmite that has been lovingly restored. oh and finally the best dj knows when a track isnt working but will not take it off the turntable until every last note has been played for fear of admitting his taste was a little crap on this occasion Now that's what i call a Northern Soul DJ (can't find an emoticon showing a tongue in cheek)

tell you what mand - those who say "i just want to listen to it" well, listen to it at home - if you want something playing at a gig then it's to dance to!
-
well, i didn't want to embarass you lloyd - her name was helga wasn't it? was she good enough for you?
-
lol, well thankfully we arent like that fluff! - proper behringer kit and an appreciative audience that like to dance. It is a regular soul night you know Fluff, not just a one off - just doing something different is all.

We at soultime are considering doing a night of breaking lesser known Northern Soul DJ's. A kind of DJ Marathon. Basically the night will be split into sets of 30 mins each from 8:30 - 11:30 and then we will do the last hour. That means we can get 6 new / up and coming DJ's some deck time and exposure and all of them have decent spots. If any of you out there fancy doing this then this is what we are looking for from the DJ's. You play vinyl only you are able to use a mic properley - we don't want any members of the marcel marceau fan club. you are not on an ego trip to play the rarest records you can find - in other words you play to the crowd not yourself. (our crowd are NOT chin strokers and may well decide to do Simon Cowell impressions on the night) You will be happy to take any slot we give you between 8:30 and 11:30 You don't expect any more than a pint at the bar in wages (sorry, but we can't handle 6 unknowns asking for £150, a hotel bed and a russian hooker for the night) You dont have an entourage that you expect to get in for free - DJ and partner only (not 'my mate who carries my records') And finally you are available on 10th July 2007 in Derbyshire. I'm not saying we are definetly doing this because you might all say "F&%$k off! i aint doing that!" and that would be your perogative. But if you do fancy a go at this please drop me a private message and we will take it from there. Keep on keepin' on and all that.

The lads at Soultime in Derbyshire are starting the new year off with a bang! Friday January 12th 2007 After trying out three venues in the latter half of 2006 Ian Marriott and Glyn Williams have settled on a great little club and would like to invite all soulies old and new to come along and sample a soultime soul night FOR FREE* The venue the guys have chosen is the very first place they tried The Leabrooks Club. The venue is booked now for the first 6 months of 2007 and if succesful will become a permanent fixture on the monthly soul calendar. Ian and Glyn are the guys that brought you the Alfreton Leisure centre soul nights so you know the calibre of soul night to expect. The venue is smart, REAL sprung wooden dance floor, very cheap beer and parking to the rear. Capacity is around 200 so please arrive early as this one will be a packer. The sound system is crystal clear using Behringer mixers, Peavey and carlsboro speaker combinations up to 4Kw that is set up correctly so's not to give permanent deafness or crappy screeching sound! The music policy for the club is 75% oldies and across the board Northern Soul. We do play the popular oldies of the moment but also breathe some life back into underplayed oldies that used to fill the floors around the country but now sit in boxes gathering dust. Basically it's all round proper Northern Soul! * All you need to get in free is a copy of our flyer, a copy of this news release or an email that we will be sending out. Our northern nights are NOT for handbaggers but for Northern Soul fans of 18+ If you're just looking for a theme disco then go somewhere else. Details: Friday 12th January 2007FREE ADMISSION!!* Leabrooks Club Greenhill Lane Leabrooks Nr Alfreton DE55 1LU 7:30 - 12:00 / 12:30 Directions: From M1 Junction 28 take the A38 Ripley / Derby look for the exit B600 Sommercotes and turn left at the end of the exit road - it's left no matter which end of the a38 you are coming from Continue past GK ford garage on your left and B&Q / Aldi on your right At the mini roundabout with the tiger pub on your left - turn right. straight over pedestrian crossings and when you reach the first set of tjunction traffic lights turn left. brill and amazing Ian. I remember that night well. we acheived a lot. the only soul night around was The Hollingwood in Chesterfield, we got all our customers from the local papers and some shrewd marketing because there was no-where to flyer drop cept the nighters at Keele - we managed about 220 soulies the first night if i remember! There was no politics around then. The backstabbing and slagging off was not there, just the music. shame that changed, can't get away from it today. Northern soul was all but dead in the east midlands save for a townie night at the pennine. You and I gave it back some life. Pretty proud of that I am and look how many soul nights were born after Alfreton, literally dozens of them used Alfreton as a springboard to start some great nights. Thanks for digging that out mate. KTF

roll up roll up to the grab-a-granny soul night!

when did the type or style of music come into this? - i didn't say anything about the musical style or taste which as you know Tony I like across the board anyways and a bit of this and a bit of that suits me fine. I also was not knocking Rolls-Royce. I go there often and like it for a change - i know what to expect also with the locals - i was using it as an example and not singling out the club. But they are now appearing at EVERY club - townies everybloodywhere means there are hardly any bastians of soul loving crowds left. Its now becoming just another piss up night with a twist for assholes who have no intrest in soul at all aside from having a laugh. It's not the music , - it's the erosion of the Northern night into a townie night. and yes, i'm paranoid ..... 'where's my Camel?'
-
I'm sorry??? do i know you?? I presume you're talking to me? anyway, Then i'm paranoid. Sorry like but I just don't like it. assholes just coming out for a theme disco night just don't do it for me. I was at Rolls Royce a few Months ago and went for a pee in the loo - this bloke walked in and said 'good night innit' - not bad I said but not been in long - he then said to me 'Last weeks rock and roll was terriffic too, lots of women and danced my socks off" Gimme a break from these tossers. Look, I think some of you are getting me wrong - I have no problem with those who come in and like soul music- even if the women do dress up like Alma Cogan or have heels 6 inches long - but it's the piss artists / handbaggers and piss takers who just come into the 'theme night" that i can't stand and i know i'm not alone. The soul scene was at it's best when it was underground - who bought these people in anyway? all they do is cause resentment and trouble IMO.
-
Gotta say i know where you guys are coming from - most of the soul night in my area (inc pilsley) are full of 'proper soulies' is it just me tho that's really pissed off with the influx of 'townies'? cos i'm really sick of seeing the wankers sneering cos they don't really fit in. trouble is there are getting more of em then soulies at some venues now (mentioning no names) and soulies are starting to feel the alien. Maybe its just me - but just because i'm paranoid doesnt mean they ARENT out to get me
-
