agree with the Stylistics and the brilliant Tramps partiuclary their incredible lps -others what spring to mind are the Delphonics which are without a doubt the sweetest group of all imho -also the Intruders -just simply mindblowing !When i think about this logically the person who has the most in terms of undervalued incredible records is bloody Edwin Starr-how many times when he was alive did we gasp "oh not Edwin again"just play Harlem or I have faith in you and weep at the genius, his stuff on granite also-never off the decks in my house!! Who else well alot of the philly-int -taken for granted by many -radio 2 played me and mrs jones the other day,I swear this record has the lot imho-as does satisfaction quarenteed -harold melvin.I absolutely agree on Arthur Conley "put our love together "is a masterpeice recording catching the essence of the early seventies sound-also how many take for granted Wilson Pickett -if you want a lesson in deep soul play search my heart -it has the lot-i think some artistes can get painted with a few hits and we can take the other stuff for granted-Wilson is a fine example of this!! How many stax records charted? perhaps every artiste on this definitive logo gets taken for granted particulary the awesome Soul Children -move over -is in my all time top 5.Candi Staton is another "try -you dont love me no more for size -mindblowing,an artiste who had a massive chart hit then really judged on the basis of that. In many ways most of the motown stuff is taken for granted in some form or another take the Commodores -play the human zoo -it is a fantastic record -so progressive for the time as was Marvin Gaye "trouble man",how many people would really search Marvins catalogue out?how many for instance know about tracks like "you",a classic example again of fame blighting peoples perception of quality! JAMES BROWN -took the northern crowd an eon to latch onto people wake up and live -etc,well hes just funk aint he [bollocks]check out georgia on my mind -again a miracle in the making!!And dont listen to the soul-stirrers lol-what have there got to offer "I supose it goes on and on!! My view on this is that the obscure argument has dulled alot of senses for so long -alot of the records that charted did so simply because there were brillaint -and alot of the input of most artists after their chart sucess in many ways even got better!!! BAZ A. CURTIS MAYFIELD -MOVE ON UP "AH SHITE "WELL HE AINT DONE NOWT HAS HE-JUST PARHAPS THE GREATEST GENUIS OF ALL-CHECK OUT MOST OF HIS CURTOM STUFF WHICH LUCKILY IS NOW IN REFO-SOUL -TRUE MASTER IN ALL HIS GLORY!!

I Also Reckon This Is David Ruffin And Eddie Kendricks
Baz Atkinson replied to Kev Cane's topic in Look At Your Box
Question is do the other big D recordings have DR in the matrix? This one does -I was convinced this was not David Ruffin-AND WROTE A LOAD ABOUT IT SOMEWHERE ON THE SITE GOING INTO GREAT DETAIL-but you know what "im not sure now lol!!, just cant dis-prove it and going off the voice its remarkably similar-the flip is bloody great also imho -bit wilder and funkier lol,Lee Rodgers produced perhaps exstending the theory more -could dam well be him LOL!!! its interesting the whole debate-punters who visited generally had such affection for the place-its amazing that after 30 years the place is still at the centre of the debate-i visiited alot and lost my youth really, dont have a romantic view etc but do acknowledge that it was my right of passage "if not a bizzarre one".How do you judge the film is the question and what factors come into the equation. firsTly you need to watch it-then the question is what level do you judge it on? on artistic merits -doubt it -on realism -highley unliely if the trailer is anything to go by?Is it just to say "we were part of the magig to our peers-family-etc,if so harmless on that level and as we all know "the scene is very nostalgic"mainly due to the fact we are in our 40s-50s and 60s.Wigan to me was blueys, petty crime, bunking school, adolescent crushes lol,but Then when the quality came via searling or should i say jOHN ANDERSON it became a SOUL REVOLUTION-A total obssession which still rages now "so how does that get reflected in a film "it simply does not",because it is potentially a light hearted lookat a certain period of history probably glammed up and tacky-might make you laugh but the question at the end of it to quote MALCOLM MACLAREN may be "DO YOU EVER FEEL THAT YOUVE BEEN CHEATED".or maybe this is our scene and we like it.I dont care because i wont rush to watch it -but deep down I know I will lol AT SOME POINT. I had not been back to wigan since 81 had a week on a course and stayed in the hotel right near the shopping centre in November -visited the cafe and if that is the cultural legacy then we have failed miserably lol, because it is a costa with a few pics -and dancing to linda and funky boys near gregs really is ridiculous [this is only my view].I guess waht I am saying is that I really hope there is something to feel proud off in this film-something that tapS into the time on more than a superficial level -i have an open mind till I see it,but the trailer looks woeful -I am a film buff so maybe biased lol. Finally the other famous club of the times was ofcourse the studio in NYC some class films have been made about that place and its mercurail owner -maybe potential futuure attempts should really get into the seedier side and be true to it,instead of f--king danCing in the bedroom and wide trousers!!!iF THE FILM DOES NOT SHOW THE FLOURESENT LIGHT THEN THATS ME BIASED I LOVED THAT LIGHT IT REALLY MADE MY TEETH AND SOCKS SHINE.LOL. The Internet, Social Networking Sites And The Northern Soul Scene
Baz Atkinson replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Joan is completly right -one is virtual -one is actual-the internet is used by many many punters and in a way the prolification of nites have meant that "the net has provided the tool to advertise -but you know what you dont have to attend".I often get confused as to terms of reference "the british rare soul scene is miles apart from most soul nights and I do not believe that soul nights etc impact rare soul nighter/upfront dos etc-if so why did i not see loads of new faces at the ones I attended last year."WHAT I DID SEE WAS A LOAD OF PEOPLE IVE KNOWN SINCE THE EIGHTIES LOOKING OLDER MORE MOODY AND CONSIDERABLY FATTER AND UGLIER ".in some cases skinnier and uglier!!! The net can be used to get to new sounds check out the threads in the audio section -thoushands and thousands of tunes not just northern-sweet-deep-gospel-funk-r/b etc,i dont beleive for one minute that these sounds been posted etc have kept me in the house -there have added to my collection and wants and in a way added to the enthusiasm and love for the music!!!The net is a tool but any scene is surely social -unless "YOU GEEK OUT IN THE HOUSE WITH YOUR NHS SPECS AND PLOT THE DOWNFALL OF THE BRITISH SOUL SCENE -dont think so -.
