The article rings a bell can anyone shed light on it? Again the broad definition -and Paul is so right on this agree with everything he says its all subjective with various definitions attached to pigeon hole what is seventies soul music!!! BAZ A hi Dave, Hope this was sarcasm aimed at Fryer and doesn't refer to me - I hang out in trendy clubs all over America, not just in New York:nono: While I'm over there, I even hang out with people who aren't white, sometimes for whole weeks at a time - even more shockingly, and I know this will be hard to comprehend but some are actual friends of mine, not just people I'm trying to get records off of Just to confuse matters further, one of them is black but with a white-sounding DJ name:swoon: Back on the subject of crossover, I know it's often attributed to VFTS, but didn't Dean Johnson have something to do with the term coming into popular use? I read an article by him on the subject ages ago, where he was saying how his original definition was really broad (even including gospel tracks off CDs etc) but later got narrowed down so much that it eventually came to just mean "jangly early 70s soul set slightly above midtempo" or thereabouts, but I can't remember what fanzine it was in. Maybe a Manc of a certain age could step forward and shed a bit of light on this (Alan? Dave? Dean, even?).

Do agree with that - !!! BAZ A i'll translated for you if you want The title is "How much I love you". Is it in refo?? Love the label, specially because of Pieces Of A Man, Gil Scott Heron's econd album and one of my faves of all time. One of the very few labels to succesfully mix jazz, soul and social conciousness... Love it!
-
yep your right rodger just checked i have a contempo one -but do recall having this at some point, hope your well mate!!! BAZ A This BOOT came out in the 70s, using the 1968 Version from the Rare Stamps Album >>> LINK <<< Other than that, I don't think that it was issued as a 45 before the Contempo Version.

Best city in the US for live music-did you see the bats DEZ ? 6th street is the best night out mate -we walked into one bar-bit like roadhouse and the band were brill-but had the nutty professor on the drums we just pissed ourselves laughing for a full hour, cant wait for the OCTOBER trip we hope to get to New orleans also!!! BAZ A Had a great time in Austin as usual. A mate who works in Houston tagged along for the fun. 6th street district was bouncing with the S+SW music and film festival. Listened to few bands and got well plastered on Friday night and was suffering all day Saturday. Watched a couple of indie Films and got to speak to the director/producer and cast. Record convention was a bit smaller than usual and was in the City Centre Conference centre rather than the usual Crockett centre. As such there wasn't really a car park so didn't see anyone selling out of their car boot. Less 7inch records than the previous times I've been and more LP's. With a lot of hard search I managed to pick up a fair few records while in Austin, biggest being a copy of The Demands - Say it Again on Clem. Will hopefully get back in the fall, if only to meet up with Baz . Cheers, Des Crombie

BAZ A As you know Baz I am here to simply serve your every command with regards to label listings from R & B Indies 26001 Steve Allen - "Where did the people go/Lo mucho que te quiero" 26002 Appleton Sytonic Menagerie Orchestra - "Chef d'oeuvre/Unknown" 26004 Esther Marrow - "He don't appreciate it/Unknown" 26007 Esther Marrow - "What a wonderful world/Money honey" 26011 Gil Scott-Heron - "Home is where the hatred is/Revolution will not be televised" 26013 Leon Thomas - "The creator has a master plan/Unknown" 26015 Gil Scott-Heron - "Lady Day and John Coltrane/Save the children" 26016 Harold Alexander - "Mama soul/Sunshine man" 26018 Bob Thiele - "Ranger's waltz/Unknown" 26019 Leon Thomas - "China doll/Unknown" 26021 Pretty Purdie - "Don't go/Song for Aretha" 26022 Gato Barbieri - "El serato/Unknown" 26023 Leon Thomas - Let's go down to Lucy's/Love each other" 26025 Leon Thomas - "L-O-V-E/Boom boom boom" 26026 Leon Thomas - "Just in time to see the sun/Never let me go" 3001 Charlie Brown - "(Funky) Sunny/C C Rider" 10155 Leon Thomas - "Blues and soulful truth/L.O.V.E love each other" 10214 Lonnie Liston Smith - "I wanna love you/Follow me" 10616 Lonnie Liston Smith - "Get down everybody/Goddess of love" 10671 Brenda J Jones with Groove Holmes - "This is me, me (not the you, you)/Morning children" Thaes are how they are numbered in R & B Indies which appears a little random amd may indicate some gaps. No mention of the Horace Tapscott track. We will need Macca to translate the Steve Allen flip and where did they get the name for 26002?

Crossover is just a label -like most things on the site -often kicked about -talked about and definetly ridiculed -the thread explains perfectly what it is ie the brilliant body of work from 69-79 that on more than one occasion woul fit a bucket load of genres discussed on here !!! 107.000 HITS SO FAR AND I HAVE NOT EVEN SCRATCHED THE SURFACE OF MY COLLECTION[and also many of the contribuers] AND THAT IS THE TRUTH -the seventies just produced the most amazing period in soul music -again amplified in the thread - and before the cynics try and kick me in the bollocks and have a go at me -pm me come round to my house and see my sixties collection all anexed up and as sad as an aanorak lol!! I love it all but imho it all leads to the seventies ie the brillaint studios -sigma-muscle shoals-stax- endless really and the period in the history when a record of magnitude of say "whats going on " can be made!!! Im proud as f--k that what was a bit fun on a friday is now turning into the definitive quide for seventies soul-if say a total stranger wanted to get into the period then point him/he the way of the thread and just start at page one and get your knowledge "its all there logo information, artistes, studio information etc etc" and we are not scratching the surface,Pete beleive it or not i respect your view -your open and honest about what you like and thats refreshing to acertain extent -but im afraid northern soul is completly and utterly lost to me -infact I honestly dont know what the f--k it is anymore and more to the point I dont really care !! jock im deffo at next lifeline mate -and theres a lift for you if you get down to milson pines on the afternoon -!!! BAZ A.
-
