ah thanks Ian looks like your strategy is paying off mate-not in Houston till oct -after the Austen fair so plenty of time to do my research etc-i know guy h had a top time there but its so hard now to try and pin people but this lock up scenario sounds very familiar-plus it just aint trendy anymore so i reckon some of the storage stuff will never surface-the whole Don Robey cat would of kept you busy mate! I figured that if I could get clearance from the labels to do 'em at this price then it can only be good for spreading the music a bit further then the confines of looking for the 7" singles etc, so figured a 'sampler' type series at the right price would be the way to go. Also I didn't want to compete with Ace/Kent because frankly they do the best job imaginable catering to connoisseurs and the serious collector market so I've gone the route of competitive pricing in the hope I can snag a large audience who'll try 'em for a fiver a pop. Hopefully it seems to be working as the series has really taken off in a number of territories so here's hoping I can get more of 'em out there......... Ya finding anything in Houston? I was there in '88 and snagged some decent bits and pieces but nothing phenomenal. There was an awful lot of stuff 'in storage' over there at the time which was frustrating 'cos there always seems to be a timing problem in getting people to open their bloody storage lock-ups. One guy dicked me around for 3 days before I had to split but not before describing the stuff he said he had which he reckoned included muliples across the whole Don Robey catalogue! AH WONDERFUL THANKS MATE!! BAZ A Try and get to see Skipper Lee Frazier, Baz (if he's still alive). https://skipperlee.com/ He was a major promoter and DJ in Houston, and has lots of stories to tell (and a book about Archie Bell and the Drells to flog). He runs (or ran - I was there five years ago) a funeral parlour. Nice old geezer, bit suspicious at first but he let me attend a gospel funeral, which was a real experience, and then drove me to his house in his big SUV. The only problem with that was he lives/lived in a very poor neighbourhood, he only drove at about 10mph and he kept falling asleep at traffic lights; I got a bit nervous at the attention we were attracting. He sold me quite a lot of stuff out of the attic above his garage, inc quite a few things I had never seen or heard before, and there was a lot left. He also pointed me in the direction of a white record dealer who had two rooms full of stuff; again, I bought some bits but only got there on the day my flight left so I didn't have time to go through. I did all the record stores and obvious places and found nothing at all; I did a few yard sales and swap meets and stuff and got a few things on Sure Shot, Ovide (Skipper's ;abel, named after his son) and other locals, but nothing spectacular. ah thanks for that mate!! BAZ A I was in Houston a few years back and found a second hand record shop on the way to the Galleria. It also doubled up as a tatto parlour next door. I had a word with the guy in the shop who told me he wasn't the owner , but the guy who was had a garage full of records. I will look around to see if i can find you the adress somewhere and will get back tp you. I bought quite a few by O V Wright there.

THINK THATS A GREAT endorsment of REFO-SOUL 9/10 aint bad -think as soon as most get the hang of usb then we are gonna have a massive site of soul music for everyone -its great when new people hit the threads and start posting as everyone has such different taste -i learn all sorts every week -and long may it continue!! BAZ A Gareth X is right also you tube is brill for knowledge of the musics context often really surprises me -bit more resonant when the creators of the music are involved instead of the djs !! I always go straight to refo soul if there is somthing I spot on e bay that looks intresting and I don't know it. And 9 times out of ten is is here. then I search the old sales forums on here for an idea of on price - quick look on popsike and the main dealers. Then I return to e bay for the chase. I am sure this would be standard practice for on line diggers and members on here when it comes to stuff that you dont know ? refo must be the largest database of Soul related music on the internet. Refo is a credit to the admin team and the members of this site who have taken the time to post the thousands of recordings. All Baz Atkinsons massive threads - Pete Smiths jamaican section etc etc. etc If you are into your Music you can spend hours n hours on here. As for ripping things / downloading things you can always put a little gap in the tune if you want to make it difficult for the bootleggers. Anything that goes through your computers soundcard or video card can be ripped - the softwares out there and there aint nothing anyone can do about it ! Best M
