One of my fav group harmony outfits and John Gary immensely talented-my fav mad lads cut below but to be honest I could of posted 20 or so up. A sad loss and one for the numerous tape swappers from the eighties that featured so many of these under played and vastly underrated cuts on !!

Do not know what there are like now but in the late eighties early nineties there were absolutely superb, still got many of the tracks in the collection records like Ron and the Embracers etc.

There were the house band for Ovide and also backed Archie Bell and the Drells in the studio. Cal Thomas was the driving force behind them but as discussed their lost out big time on the Tighten up credits and none of them got any recognition at all. Quality always rises but sometimes it takes an eon.

To me the Dells were the ultimate showmen - I did not realise untill I saw them at Trentham Gardens how utterly polished there were. Every step identical absolute icons of soul music to see live you could of killed me that night and my life would of been complete. When there did this record below I was in tears it was just beyond belief and still resonates with me now. I thought to myself there is the soul movement in Britain with all its history of venues,mad prices of records,a scene etc then there are bands like the Dells who just stand above it all and shine and bring you to your knees and give you that real taste of Black American Soul Music and their were the masters of it. Its tough imho never saw many back in the day and its a record that rarely turns up. Not my cup of tea but deffo a time piece etc,used to echo round the casino and in that place sounded bloody marvellous much like many of the other tracks of that nature that had that feel but lacked real soul content. PS There did go onto become the Ambassadors that cut that Pee Vee track another casino biggie as we know but not be confused with the Herley Johnsons Ambassadors that cut all those fab cuts on Arctic Atlantic etc.

I think there is have seen it on a 100 club review from a while back and I was thinking "i like the sound of that " ,im sure someone will put us right. Listening to this clip again from above just immense.

Mighty Lovers cover up is the dogs dandles never been so excited to hear a record since the Just Brothers and early days of Jesse James,the clip above does not do that record justice. Love Jean Carter also its longevity says the lot. I rarely get to hear Butch these days last time was Guys 60th but the MIGHTY LOVERS is the essence of the northern soul scene played loud its simply mind blowing.

Yep both my copies play fine I found what I wanted is one of her best ever cuts imho,the strings and production are utterly fabulous.Just a bit tittle tattle but Frank Sinatra originally owned Reprise Records setting the label up for Artistic Freedom it was then bough quickly by Warner Brothers,the label had some fabulous artistes including Mary Wells along side big hitters like Neil Young,Captain Beefheart,Hendrix etc good to see Mary Wells in that company.

The £5 presses have been flooding ebay for a while now,I would not say their are identical the colour is a give away ,similar to Grace Love except that boot has a fake matrix,I think the record is back at around £400,one I had tucked away in a dusty box and brought back out after Butch done the business again.
