  1. With great respect rednose and trying to prevent this thread being seen as a 1 on 1. Is it really `keeping the faith` ? The faith as in what? Being into northern soul? Surely thats what the majority are into so why try and be superior by inferring that if you do not attend or support a certain soul venue then you are not a 'soulie'?
  2. I really don`t think theres anything in my question thats 'going over old ground` Just was asking what a true definition would be. Also, Mike, quite of few of the sort in the east midlands.
  3. Couldn't agree more
  4. Don't know if it will get a response but occasionally you get flyers advertising a night for 'proper soulies' or 'soulies only' . These seem to revolve around the events where those who consider themselves 'True northern fans' gather. So can somebody tell me what a Real Soulie' , Proper Soulie or 'for soulies only' is, I'm intrigued?????? cause I'm begining to think that since 1971 I thought I was a 'proper soulie' but maybe i was wrong
  5. Sorry meant to put William Bell Easy Comin Out, on Mercury
  6. We know it's an addiction so i thought I'd ask 'whats your next fix gonna be' mines William Bell, Easy Goin Out.
  7. thanks to those who pointed out my obvious mistake, I meant The Arabians,, Take a Chance on Me
  8. Eward Hamilton, Take A Chance On Me Marvellos, Somethings Burning Lou Roberts, You Fooled Me Spindles, And The Band Played On Maurice & The Radiants, Baby You Got It Shep, Fool To Fool
  9. they do around here, and some do it deliberately, if you don't wear the baggies, carry a holdall, and listen to the same 50 tunes everyweek. and they will even tell others to go to their venue because "we play better music than they do".. trust me it happens.
  10. Agree with your point of view.. I really do think that numbers IN GENERAL have started to decline: this I think has something to do with the boredom factor in some more than the ability to listen to sounds in different formats. When travelling there is also the risk factor in that even if the event plays the advertised music policy then there may only be a few in leading to a poor atmosphere. Anyway, good to see different point of view.
  11. 200 miles, man where abouts in the country would that be, want us to come over and say hello
  12. went out last night to a club that normally pulls in a good crowd although occasionally, like last night they are down on numbers, thought about it a while then noticed the amount of flyers on the tables. brought them all home and after adding soul nights that we know of that hadn't got flyers at the venue we figured that within 30 miles east, north and south of us there are something like 30 soul nights each month. THIRTY SOUL NIGHTS, no wonder the numbers are down, just wondered what you thought about that???????????????????????
  13. Yes it is but well worth another watch!
  14. started my soul life in 1969-1970 , by going to local clubs in Beeston Nottm and then onto the Brit Club on the banks of the trent. visited VaVas, The Torch etc whenever we could afford it, we often hitch hicked, (me and my mate trev) , Went to Leeds , but can't remember the name of the club, was downstairs as I recall, was a regular at Selecta Disc where i bought my first pressing and was told they were originals,, some things never change, got into it when my older brother Barry started bringing these records home and playing them on his new Dansette record player. He went to the allnighters at the Dungeon in Nott'm. First record was Jackie Wilson Higher & Higher from Barry for 10p.
  15. What like you me and everyone else on here?? The difference being I don't know what the next post is going to say.. do you? (or are you telepathic or psychic or something else??)
  16. Apart from all the theories, ideologies and psychological meanderings about whats a burnt out oldie and what isn't.... Why is it that people just don't get bored with listening to the same predictable sounds over and over again?? Thats what amazes me
  17. There is a difference between having an opinion that may be different from others and 'Saying something nice' If we all said 'something nice' all the time wouldn't the world be such a boring, monotonous, dreary, pathetic, sad, hum-drum, pathetic, run of the mill, predictable etc. etc. place?? I'm not knocking (?) Just stating a very clear fact. Anyway : what is a 'soulie'??
  18. Exactly Kev : Hence; "again there is no such thing as an oldie because just about everything we play is old and when we went to our youth clubs and early soul nights weren't we in fact listening to modern music????, well we didn't know what it was and we had never heard it before, so at best it had to be crossover" The sentiment of 'knocking your head against a brick wall' comes to mind though when trying to get this point across to an out and out 'soulie' (Whatever that is!!) Perhaps they are recognisable by the outfits they wear (OOPS! Thats for another thread)
  19. I agree whole heartedly with this Ged.
  20. Thats a bit sad isn't it??
  21. Ok I'll say my bit now the missus has said hers,,, First if its in the groove that counts then there is no such thing as an oldie, modern tune , cross over or what, because all that counts is in the groove, secondly if its all that is in the groove, why do people run 'oldies nights' and advertise them as for 'soulies only' as if they are the only people who know what soul music is. again there is no such thing as an oldie because just about everything we play is old and when we went to our youth clubs and early soul nights weren't we in fact listening to modern music????, well we didn't know what it was and we had never heard it before, so at best it had to be crossover. No, oldies are to do with nostalgia and going out and listening to them again is a nostalgia trip. To be true to northern soul you have to remember what northern soul was about and that was discovering 'new music' rare and obscure records, the rarer the better. That remains for me the heart of northern soul. I love my oldies and I do like to hear them but going to some soul nights is like listening to the oldies radio stations. We can keep the oldies (played out tunes) but we need to rediscover some of the excellent oldies never or hardly ever played whilst remaining true to the desire to discover new music.
  22. Exactly...wheres the imagination?
